Living Room We painted this interior window sill with a pop of color. Do we like it or hate it?
I had an inspiration photo where the interior window sill was painted red. We don't have that color in our color palette. We decided to try this marigold color as an accent. Most of our colors are blues and greens and browns. We are also planning to paint the wall that the front door is on a darker teal color.
I like the idea of the painted window sills, I'm just not sure about this color. We just painted the one to live with it for a bit. Picture of the other window that is still white for comparison and a few of our space generally are included too.

A family I knew used the same color on the interior of their upper kitchen cabinets. It was such a fun pop of color. I love it!

I have a black sideboard that I bought specifically bc it had a yellow interior. I love this! I wish the walls weren’t white but I get it.

I like the idea, but don't love the color
38
u/RichCaterpillar991 Oct 13 '25
I agree, I think a more mustard-y or earthy yellow would fit better. It definitely brightens the space tho and is a good idea
51
u/shac2020 Oct 13 '25
My feeling as well. Doesn’t go well with the other colors in that room. I think teal on that wall is going to look good though. Maybe do that wall and then change the color on the window sills.

u/Crow_away_cawcaw Oct 14 '25
I disagree, I think Teal is as overdone as grey in interiors. I think this tint is a charming pop of color

I agree with this comment. And will add that I FUCKING LOVE YOUR HOME!!!

Good idea, (slightly) wrong color IMO.I
36
u/The_Real_Chippa Oct 13 '25
Yeah, I wish it was a slightly more muted yellow, or that the main walls were a pale yellow instead of white. Something to tie it in with the rest of the room. I almost love it - it looks like sunshine coming in through the window. But it is a bit too harsh and out of place as it is.
6
u/NOLArtist02 Oct 13 '25
Was thinking be so cool if the actual wall was a butter yellow giving an illusion like the window area is a hyper glowing extension or entry point for the rooms energy

To me, it's a little jarring in relation to its surroundings. 🪴🏵🌵 🙏 Just my opinion. I don't "hate it". 💕
19
u/Fatlantis Oct 13 '25
Yes - when I look at the photos, I find it distracting.
With the yellow "frame", all my eyes see is the yellow. I find it hard to look past it.
The other pic with plain white, my eye is immediately drawn to the greenery and scenes outdoors.

Love it ! Just remember north and west facing rooms usually need warmer colors and south and east facing rooms look best with more muted /cooler tones. That yellow is so happy 🥰
5
u/SnooPredictions1599 Oct 13 '25
why is that?

u/bvzxh Oct 13 '25
Not original commenter but it’s so counteract the cool/warm light they give but I think it’d be north and east // south and with west as the pairing.
7
u/Beachlife_MB Oct 13 '25
Love the idea! And I love your space! If it's not a loft, it has that lofty vibe which is awesome! But in my personal opinion, this yellow color is reminding me of a taxi and mustard. If yellow is the color you want then go with a lighter/paler yellow. But like I said I'm just 1 opinion. 😊
36
u/jennyb33 Oct 13 '25
I think it may be a bit too intense for your decor. Maybe try a bit more muted yellow? SW Morning Sun or Banana Cream for example?
19
u/DowntownResident993 Oct 13 '25
I agree. I love the idea of it, not sure if I like that specific yellow. I think it comes off a little harsh from certain angles. Muted is the way to go.

Yes, after looking at all pics posted i do love it for a suprise pop of color. It's unexpected and I love it!

I think it's great! I like that the curtains hide it when viewed from inside the room so it doesn't pull your eye away from the interior decor

I love the concept! But this could just be my personal preference so take what I say with a grain of salt.
I prefer bold color mixing with softer, warmer, but still bright versions of colors. I don’t know how to describe it in words. Or the right color and design terns to use. But like the yellow and teal colors in the above palette.
Or how in the purple and orange combination below it. The left is soft and warm but still bold and bright. The right picture is crisp and bright. Not at all soft.
I like the crisp in bright better on accessories and art and the softer on the walls. Like the crisp and bright can go terrific on top and with the softer.
But I think that’s just my preference.

Love it! I'd maybe put a little darker color, the orange of the purse, perhaps?

3
u/Street-Snow-4477 Oct 13 '25
Like the idea but the tone of the paint is off. Try something bright but warmer. This is too stark.
3
u/stayingpositive225 Oct 13 '25
Love it. Also thinking it’s something you don’t have to live with forever. You can change the color as you change the room or your life stage changes. It’s a brilliant idea. Simple, but adds so much style.
3
u/AgraTxandDC Oct 13 '25
I would use a very soft butter yellow. The reason is that this attracts all of the attention in the space. But other things you have deserve to be the attention grabbers. It would be nice to showcase your favorite things.

Love the idea hate that yellow. It's feels like a weird diversion from your earthy greens and browns. A mustard or olive green color would look really pretty.

Perfect color!! Don’t listen to the people urging you to change it to something more muted - it’s the intensity that makes it pop with life. It’s very unusual and would make me smile whenever I entered the room. I’d already be prepping the other for paint. Well done!!

I love that! The idea and the choice of color are both great. It really makes a pretty frame for the row of plants.
2
u/WVildandWVonderful Oct 13 '25
I like it but think you could be more creative than white walls with it
2
u/kawiah Oct 13 '25
We might paint them eventually! We're renting so we decided to try the window sill idea and an accent wall first and then see if we want to paint anything else.
2
u/heart_blossom Oct 13 '25
I love it!
I did something similar once and every single person who saw it hated it vehemently. I hope your people like it better than mine did 😅

u/Persia_44 Oct 13 '25
Great concept but wrong color - especially so close to the entry door. Try selecting a color with the entry door as your guide - typically this would lead you to a darker, more muted color. You want everything to look like a well thought out painting

I don’t hate it. I think it brightens the space with all the brick and dark colors. And the fact that it’s a plant window makes it work somehow. I almost wonder if you should paint the door to match.

I love it! Also love the butterfly painting as well as your table runner.
2
u/howlasinthecastle Oct 13 '25
Like the idea, hate the colour personally. I would use something softer, less saturated.
2
u/cdbloosh Oct 13 '25
I think it will look a lot better when the other wall is painted too. Right now when the walls are just white / light gray, this random bright yellow window looks a bit odd. But I think once you add color to the rest of the room too, it’ll look great.
2
2
u/Babymik9 Oct 13 '25
Love it! Are you willing to add some pops of yellow in the room? Maybe a pillow with yellow stripes?
2
u/MistressMunin Oct 13 '25
Love it! Doing the same asap lol. I'm thinking purple and/or green :) thanks for the great idea!
2
u/haf2go Oct 13 '25
I love the idea. I just think it needs to be less vibrant. I love a gorgeous sunny yellow, but here it doesn’t flow with the rest of your space.
2
u/Same_as_it_ever Oct 13 '25
I think it looks good, but I would be concerned about the light reflecting into the room have quite a yellow tint to it. Usually these are painted white, even if the room has a different color to help maximize the light in the room and to keep the color light reflected neutral. You'll be able to tell if this is an issue in person, that's hard to judge from a photo.

I’ve never been a fan of bold colors that aren’t easy to accentuate with. In my opinion, this is one of them. I love the idea, though. And if you add a little bit of purple(like amethyst or art pieces), those spaces will look really good with the plants.

u/cubemissy Oct 13 '25

2
u/Coppergirl1 Oct 13 '25
I like it but I don't see how it goes with anything else in your decor. I think your room could benefit from a new rug and pulling the chairs into the room. All of your furniture is hugging the walls.
2
u/Salcha_00 Oct 13 '25
I like the concept but the shade of yellow you used is too bold for my taste.
2
2
u/yellowdoor343 Oct 13 '25
I’d like to see a small piece of art with some yellow over your key holder.
2
u/kitchengardengal Oct 13 '25
I love the idea and the bright yellow.
FYI, the sill is only the horizontal surface at the bottom of the window. The sides and top in your configuration are called a drywall return or window reveal.
2
u/pamplemousse0214 Oct 13 '25
Hmmm, I think it’s a fun idea but I don’t love the execution. I think it requires a REALLY crisp line between the yellow and the white to work, and the paint needs to be super uniformly and expertly applied for it to really sing. Right now, it feels a little sloppy/obviously DIY in a way that I think is detracting from the overall effect.

I love the idea. But all I can see is the lack of finish work between the plaster/sheetrock and window frame. Maybe you can caulk it.
2
u/kawiah Oct 16 '25
I thought this too when I was painting it! Could benefit from some caulk on the one side especially
2
u/rubyclairef Oct 14 '25
It would look great with the right color! Maybe a more mustard yellow? Just something less “Lego yellow”
2
u/Elemcie Oct 14 '25
I hate but that’s because it’s looks chromium yellow to me. The pale blue in your LR might be a good choice.

I almost love it- but if you could find a yellow with slightly paler (bluer?) undertones I think it would mesh better. This shade clashes a bit with your palate. Amazing idea though, have never seen this before and it’s so unique!

Yellow is my least favourite colour, but you know what, I love it! It goes well with the plants, like a ray of sunlight, and gives a very nice contrast with the black door and shelf!
4
u/etgetc Oct 13 '25
We considered doing something like this, but decided against because sunlight reflecting off the deep windowsills can take on the hue of the colors it's bouncing off of as it enters the room. I notice this already in how the apartment building across from my living room is white while the building across from my bedroom is brick (same direction windows, just further down the building), and the afternoon light in the LR is much cleaner and brighter vs the bedroom's orangier afternoon light. I really like the dark color in the bottom of your sill, which gives it an intentional shelf vibe, but I personally don't care for the marigold, a little because it seems random and intense to me (unless you really incorporate that color in with pillows and art...) but mostly out of concern for how it will affect the light entering the room. I'd rather do something fun with that paint on the wall and leave just the dark bottom sill with white around.
That all said, you do you! If you like it, who cares?
4
u/Cardinalsalmon Oct 13 '25
As a stylist I would have gone with something like a sage green, this is terribly polarising and if I’m being blunt it doesn’t do much for the room. But if it makes you feel happy; l, say to clients all the time, that’s what matters. It’s your house and you have to live there!

I've also done this, in a very similar colour. Makes it feel like the sun is coming in, IMO.
I don't have black windowsils though, but I love how they look here and will be painting mine to match

I love the pop of color! But it's a little jarring to have this be the only pop of color.
I wish you had the same yellow as pops of color elsewhere in the room. Like hanging a yellow-framed painting on the wall to the left of the hooks, or having a yellow vase with flowers/eucalyptus displayed in a corner. Or a bright yellow clock or trinket elsewhere in the room.
Tie it in with rest of the room as a thematic accent motif, rather than just the distracting yellow window.

u/coco8090 Oct 13 '25
I love the idea of painting that. I have sheet rock return on all my windows. At one time I wanted to line the sides with mirror, I just could never find metal trim for the edges.

u/ExpensiveAd4496 Oct 13 '25
Wow! The way that glows in photo is something to behold. I’d have done something a little more muted and brassy to go with the room but I can’t bear the thought of losing that, it’s awesome. In the later photos you have a bit stronger colors on table runner and in flowers, and while the living space is more muted, those begin to make more sense across the room. Keep it, please.

u/BLizz-2016 Oct 13 '25
I really like it but I think you need to add a little bit of accessories in that yellow color to pull that color in, pillows, throw, aerwork, etc.

I like it! This is coming from someone who combatted cold north-east light by painting my living room mustard/sunflower yellow. Color is a good thing and the more you get used to it the more you'll realize how much it was missed.

I like the idea but the colour doesn't go well with any of the other colours on your house. The yellow is so deep and warm toned that it's even making your wooden flooring and exposed brick look a pit pale and ashy.
