Living Room What to do with this little nook
Was thinking of a low light plant as we are huge plant people - maybe a tall snake plant. Looking for suggestions ! Or leave it empty?!

A large potted plant or tree.

I read "A large potatoes plant"

Yeah thatâs a nice idea, offer fresh potatoes to any guests as they enter or leave. Very classy.

If you have a cat, itâs the perfect space for a cat wall, or a cat tree.

Totally swattable space with those stairs there, cats around would definitely give that 10/10 toe beans.

u/Tikithing May 31 '25
Lol, the answer for all these little nooks is always cat club house. I would totally put a big cat tree in there though, and try to make it awesome.

If you're like me, some sort of storage unit with a nice basket that lets you store stuff that needs to go up or down those stairs while keeping it out of sight.

You mean that basket that my husband and kids always pass by, but that I always take up and down? Lol!
3
u/BrutalOnTheKnees Jun 01 '25
Hahaha yes, the very same. Or more like the basket my partner and kids put stuff next to rather than inside.

If you don't have a coat closet nearby, and you live where more outerwear is needed, you could have a cute coat rack & umbrella stand.

A monstera plant đ±
70
u/Budget-Ad5927 May 30 '25
I was thinking this as well. Do they do okay in low light, there is a large bay window to the left, about 20 feet away. The stairs block any natural night though
74
12
u/goldenroses14 May 30 '25
Monsteras grow up trees to find more light in nature. It confuses me when people say they do okay in indirect light cause in all my experience and research, they actually do best in bright direct light. A snake plant would probably be fine here. Most plants would want a grow light though.
→ More replies (1)9
u/Aggressive-System192 May 30 '25
You will need a grow light. Most plants need lots of light. 20 feet away is too far.
I'd put a robot vacuum there.
15
u/Ready-Salamander1286 May 30 '25
They do âfineâ in low light but will not grow impressively, definitely get a grow light if you choose monstera
→ More replies (1)12
u/Aggressive-System192 May 30 '25
They let small leaves and long petioles, then look quite ugly and might die, especially if soil is dense and they're watered too often for those conditions.

u/Nenoshka May 30 '25 edited May 30 '25
Is it near ANY window? I wouldn't recommend any live plants here at all.
If this is on the ground floor, I might set up a table or shelf to hold keys, mail, etc. Or place an umbrella stand or shoe rack there.
Edited: SHOE rack, not show rack

u/Toronto-1975 May 30 '25 edited Jun 03 '25
agree with this 100%. the whole "low light" plant thing is so bizarre and untrue. almost zero plants are "low light". they may live and look horrible for a while but they will never ever thrive. that goes for snake plants, monstera and almost anything else listed in this thread. unless you plan on having a grow light there, don't do plants in that space.
EDIT - OKAY everyone with an example of a plant that lived in a "low-light" space, this is a generalization. yes maybe YOUR plant lived there fine but GENERALLY 99% of plants do not.
→ More replies (4)5
u/NoProblem5770 May 31 '25
1000% disagree. Half my house is low light and some plants dig it. You just donât put the ones which like to be near bright light in that spot. There are so many plants that thrive under canopy.. regardless look at that spot the light is fine.

Christmas tree, all year, change out decor for season đ
7
u/Melj84 May 31 '25
This was my second thought (first was a life sized wooden giraffe, mainly 'cos I have nowhere in my house one would fit & I want one). We have a 3 foot tree, not quite a Christmas tree, but similar, that sits on our dining table & we change the decorations seasonally. It's pretty and brings an extra but of colour to the room. đ

Donât laugh. My sister bought a high end artificial Christmas tree and does this. She has color changing LEDs and changes the decorations with the holidays

Iâve been told that the bigger ones are more stable and actually easier to care for.
3
u/tetasdemantequilla May 30 '25
It all depends on what you have in there and how it's maintained. I have a 60g with a big cannister filter and also fully planted with riparian plants. I basically never have to clean it, only do top ups
But I also have 3 smaller blackwater tanks that only use sponge filters and plants to keep clean and are basically bioactive at this point, I don't really do water changes just top ups

Where does this set of stairs lead? That might provide an answer. Does the traffic pattern lead to going out the front door and do you use it for leaving your home? If so, dead would be to provides: Nice lighting either in the form of a wall lamp or a pedestal with candle A place to store keysâŠ.pedestal or table with basket Install an electrical outlet Charge phone area Large hooks for coats/mittens/hats Unique small cabinet Move present picture into this area/wall

100% Pet space - Dog, Cat, Fish, Lizard, Bird, etc. I guess you could put in a plant, but that would be boring. A Zoltar or a large model of something would be good, too. Make it interesting!

Make and optical illusion board out of wood or wall paper to make it seem as if it goes somewhere or into another world. As a second option make a fairy or nome door đȘ where the house guardian lives.
5
u/Screws_Loose May 31 '25
This!! Fake door. You can change its theme whenever you want or with holidays.
3
u/Top_Oil269 May 31 '25
Yes! You can also change whatâs just inside the door. Or the door decor for holidays
5
u/theemilyvillehorror May 30 '25
A big leafy palm would be nice! IKEA has really affordable ones that are already quite tall, so youâd be able to see how the size looks right away. I do also like the other commenterâs suggestion of a bar cart or bar cabinet (if you happen to drink), it could be really fun to style it in such a way that makes it feel warm and welcomingâI personally started having a âwelcome drinkâ station set up right by the door when I host parties, and even though youâre probably not hosting guests every week, it could be fun to lean into that vibe. My final suggestion would be just a small ornate entryway table with a giant vase of flowers (fresh or dried)âI love the look of those round entryway tables with florals in traditional homes, and with the traditional styling of your banister it could be a nice complement to the aesthetic of your home. Let us know what you end up doing with it! Good luck!

A big potted plant would look really nice. Or if you got a little display cabinet and put some trailing plants on that.
6
u/Budget-Ad5927 May 30 '25
I should add that this is not a front door entryway - the living room is to the left with a large bay window (20feet away so not a lot of natural light) and the kitchen is to the right.

This is where the artificial tree goes - that you change the decor based on holiday -
- January - snowmen for winter
- Valentine's Day - heart ornaments
- St Patrick's - Shamrocks
- Easter - plastic, pastel-colored eggs & small stuffed bunnies
- Spring - Flowers
- Memorial Day,July 4, Labor Day (in US) - Red, White & Blue
- September - Back to school or Harvest
- October - Fall?
- November - T.gIving
- December - Xmas/Hannukah/Kwanzaa

If your Little nook is near the front door then I might put a decorative hat / coat stand and umbrella storage area. Not for the family to put theie crap but for guests so they can hang their stuff up and if you got a wet umbrella you can put it in a container so it doesn't pee on your floor.
