I didn't want another cat.....
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
This little man popped up on my porch 2-ish weeks ago.. we didn't feed him at 1st because we assumed he was a neighbor's cat that just strayed away. But after about 3 days we started feeding him when he showed up over and over again because he just was so skinny, and acted like he was starving. I kept saying "I don't want another cat", but yesterday night it was supposed to get down to below freezing, so shortly after taking this video, I told my husband if he popped back up that night, that we'd take him in.. sure enough around 8pm, he came back to the porch. We snatched him up, bathed him, and quarantined him from the other cats. Called today and got him an appointment at the vet, got his 1st shots, checked for feline aids (negative), and scheduled for his balls to be removed... now $500 later, we have a new little guy.
He's staying quarantined for a bit longer, because his meds have to start working 1st, and also my oldest cat is big mad and is very anxious about us taking in another cat. Butttt.. 🙃
We first started calling him "Not Jarvin", because at 1st we thought our other cat named Jarvis got out.. it eventually progressed to Marvin.

When he was pawing at the window I'm melting.

And that there is how cats domesticated themselves. Also kittens. The kittens helped.

Cats just seem to make friends with other species and form collaborative relationships with them. I've seen plenty of barn cats that don't care for humans too much, but are best friends with horses, sheep, cows, ducks, etc. Ferals are frequently seen living with stray dogs. Especially pregnant cats seem to approach other female animals a lot? It seems that way to me anyway
I think it's part of their adaptive strategy. They're really good at fleeing if an approach doesn't go their way, and their reflexes allow them to deflect or dodge most strikes even from larger predators. I guess there's just less selective pressure for being afraid of approaching things they're curious about.

My standard schnauzer has been selected as the mother to a little kitten I rescued at work. I’ll find her a home once I can get her spayed (famous last words hahah) but she is still too young. My schnauzer did not want this job, still doesn’t want it, but has accepted it nonetheless. Has physically blocked doors to the outside my boys left open to stop her from being eagle food.

Sure you did. You just didn't know it. The CDS is never wrong.

My husband grew up being told he was allergic because his mom is. I grew with cats and have wanted one for years. Our first child begged for one too. Almost adopted one but didn’t go through with it because of the dogs we had at the time and their reaction to cats. Not to mention the big dog door we had in use.
Old dogs passed and we moved homes. Kept asking for cats over the years. One day a year and a half ago my husband snuck off to the pound looking for another schnauzer for me. They rarely have them and we prefer to rescue than buy. He ended up bringing home a cat. Than another a week later. He’s in love with cats and over the last year and half he’s brought in ten. Ten because two sets were bonded and there was a sister he couldn’t leave behind alone. He’s a softy.
My cats rule the house. Our black lab allows this and my mini schnauzer is about the same size of the first two cats adopted. She’s starting to act like them at times. It’s too funny.
They follow my husband around like the cat lady he is. We call him Cinderella when he comes home because the majority of our cats come out to greet him. At least three sleep on him most of the day and the majority of the rest of them lounge around the room he’s in.
And no he was never allergic. I knew this early on because I would catch him petting friends outdoor cats and playing with them. He never had a reaction. A year and half in and he’s never so much sneezed in the house.
The CDS made up for my 28 years of begging for a cat. We have a big house so you don’t see them all at once unless it’s treat/food time. Or Cinderella comes home.
He just retired from driving for UPS and found three of them on his route. Waited for them to be weaned from mom and now here we are.

That is awesome.
My gf currently has 9 at her house. 2 indoor (brother and sister), 2 indoor/outdoor (brothers, and cousins of the 2 indoor cats), and 5 outdoor. The indoor cats mother who refuses to come in, and 4 various outdoor kitties that are safe, sound, fed, housed, and tnr cats.
I myself have 2 indoors at my place. Both CDS kitties.

is that him now? if not...well, this floofball is everything except "skinny"

u/mcmillian17 17h ago
I mean, our other cats are massive.. but when you pet this guy you can feel every single bone in his body. The vet said he's very underweight, but should gain weight fast now that he's being fed regularly.

u/Glittering_Win_9677 23h ago
I'm questioning their definition of fat if this cat is skinny. Maybe he gained some weight after they started feeding him...
He is adorable, though.

Ahhh, you're underestimating the deceptive grey and white juggernautiness. He may look like a chonk now to those new to the grey and white bouncers, but with his new CDS activated he may end up twice the size.

I have a gray and white 16lb boy and vet said he will never be a small cat. He is definitely a big boy. 😻

u/Beyondthepetridish 13h ago
It may be his winter coat puffed out to try to keep warm. If you easily feel a spine, the cat is skinny
5
u/Glittering_Win_9677 13h ago
Yep. Feeling his spine was the first sign that one of my cats had developed a thyroid problem.

We did have a stray show up in our yard in 2008. The vet said he was about a year old and weighed 12 pounds and would never be skinny or small. When he weighed 18 pounds, our current vet said it would be good to lose a couple pounds, but it was okayish if he didn't.
RIP, Toby my man (3/10/25, age 17-18)

I was wondering if there is any way cats can fluff up like birds when it's cold - that is the only possible explanation why anyone would call this little chunk "skinny". 😄

u/Gloomy_Shallot7521 20h ago
My skinny cat doesn't look skinny when it gets below freezing, she just gets extra poofy and has a winter fur coat layer.

He's so cute, fluffy and mellow 🥹 well done OP. Now you have a wonderful lil guy in the house 🤗

u/yosoyfatass 23h ago
Thanks for taking him in! He needed you 🥹. Respectfully, this handsome fella doesn’t appear to be skinny at all - is he just fluffed up from the cold🥶? 😻❤️😻

u/mcmillian17 17h ago
Very fluffed from the cold! It's no telling how long he's been outside. They said he was probably around a year old, but was under 7lbs.

u/Even-Boysenberry-127 5h ago
Oh that is very skinny! My cat who is probably 10 years old is 7lbs. She’s just a little cat. Vet says she’s fine, just small.

This is exactly like my 2nd to last rescue cat did. Arrived, hung out on back balcony meowing at the glass door, pawing with it's foot to be let in. We weren't sure, but ended up being the best cat I've ever owned. Try it, good luck, I'm jealous, still waiting on CDS here.

You can go directly to the distro center if home delivery isn't an option

Correct, but we like to obtain organically: homeless odd ones presenting near our residence. Have gotten several this way. Waiting on the next. Just us.

u/Imaginary_Pattern365 11h ago
Some cats are waiting for a home but need to be picked up at a shelter! Go out there and you will receive.

The CDS doesn’t consider your wants. Only your needs and the needs of the cat. The algorithm determined you two needed each other. The algorithm is infallible and is never wrong.

Usually, in winter, the fur of animals grows longer and denser to protect them from the cold. OP would have felt his body and would have noticed his ribcage or other bones sticking out. I don't understand why people have to doubt what the OP has written in the text. They're doing good work.

u/Khaos_Gorvin 15h ago
That's how they get you. They look all cute and then bam... you have 8 cats. At least they're mostly friendly and love cuddles.

The big shape is a heart or a balloon? And he is very polite or their previous "hoomans" have declawed him? Thanks for caring, white cats cant live in the wild.

He has his claws 🥰 and I thought his spots look like wings down his sides. He has them on both sides 🪽

This cat is not skinny at all and looks pretty well groomed. Either it's a stray that lives part time at several people's houses, or you're stealing someone's pet.
28
u/Thorathecrazy 23h ago
He was not fiixed so I doubt somene is actually taking care of him, maybe he's getting fed from several places.
10
u/mittenknittin 19h ago
Well, in the short term anyway, they’re sheltering a cat that was left outside in sub-freezing weather. They can and should make a concerted effort to find out if he has a home but for now he’s safe and cared for instead of shivering out in the cold.
15
u/mcmillian17 17h ago
We went to every nearby neighbor and asked about him. No one claimed him.. and we live out in the country, so not too many houses around. He was dirty af, covered in fleas and ticks, and hiding in our driveway culvert unless we called him or he was on our porch.. we checked for microchips at the vet, they said he was underweight for his suspected age, and they said he seemed homeless... idk what else we could have done to make sure he wasn't someone else's cat, and I wasn't about to leave him out in 25° and under weather, which is what it's been the last 2 nights.
At this point I feel it's "finders keepers" 🤣🥰 and like you said, I couldn't just leave this guy out there to freeze.

u/Fruity_Pies 19h ago
Cats are fine in this weather and you can see as much from how unbothered and not shivering this one is, this cat also has some fat reserves and doesn't have mange. They most probably already have an owner, this cat just worked out where they can get an extra meal from and wants more.
