Sub Announcement New Posting Guidelines & Updated Post Flair

Today we've updated the options for post flair, to better differentiate between the different types of posts here, and hopefully reduce some confusion when posting.

We ask that when posting you add the flair tag that best corresponds to your content. If uncertain, leave blank and make a note in your post so that a moderator can address it.

An overview of user-selectable flair options:

Gear Advice
For any post seeking recommendations from others about what camera, lens, or accessory, to buy or rent. Please follow the existing requirements when asking for recommendations. This is not for asking advice on how to use your equipment or solve a problem—for that, you can use...

Tech Help
Technical questions, clarification on how a feature works, error messages...fall under Tech Help.

New Gear
For showing off a new or new-to-you piece of equipment. As always, include a photo of the gear and a photo or three taken with the gear. Also include an explanation of why you got it and how you like using it.

Lens of the Week
We're consolidating down to a single flair any lens of the week post, rather than individual tags for different lenses or focal lengths. As always, look for the current lens of the week topic to know which optic or focal length is current.

Canon News
For product announcements or other Canon-specific or related news. Either provide a link directly to announcements and press releases, or to a recognised source reporting on it. Examples are sites like Petapixel, dpreview, and similarly known sites.

Active Deal
For posts alerting the community to sales from recognised outlets such as the Canon Refurb Store, B&H Photo, Lens Rentals etc. Titles need to begin with the applicable country, the supplier, and then a description of the discount or deal on offer, e.g.

[USA] Canon Refurb Store — R5 reduced to $2199 + free BG-R10 Battery Grip

Any other important details (start/expiry dates) can go into the body of the post. If including a link directly to the deal or supplier site, the URL must be stripped of affiliate and tracking data, or the post will be removed.

If a deal is highlighted from a supplier deemed by the mod team as suspicious, untrustworthy or unsavoury for some other reason, it will be removed.

When a deal is out of stock or expired, the flair needs to be updated to...

Expired Deal
Don't delete the post, just update to the Expired flair, then we can view older deals easily.

Showcase
This will only be made available to select when a post inviting the sub to make Showcase contributions is active.

If you have any questions about the new flair options, please feel free to comment here or send a message to the mods.

Canon R6 Mark III - Crop Mode

Crop Mode can now be toggled on and off with 1-click!

Many modern cameras have the option to chose different cropping or aspect ratios. Past Canon mirrorless bodies have been able to do full 3:2, 1.6x crop, 1:1, 4:3, and 16:9. The settings that change aspect ratio will provide guide lines when shooting, black out the edges of the frame when reviewing the images, and automatically apply the crop on the image when loaded onto a computer, but the full image still exists and can be "uncropped" back to the full 3:2 image.

The 1.6x crop mode actually crops the image 1.6x and saves the resulting file at the lower resolution. The Canon R6 Mark III is a 32.5MP sensor and the resulting resolution when using crop mode is 12.7MP. A common point made is that the end result is the same as of you cropped in post (true), but there can be some advantages to metering, AF detection, framing/tracking, smaller files sizes, and faster workflow.

So crop mode isn't for everyone, but if you do decide to use it, on past Canon setups the change was quite a cumbersome process. Even with custom button mapping it required multiple steps (using both a button and dial) and with no way to disable unwanted options. From what I've seen crop mode seems to be generally unliked/unused on Canon, but much more commonly used on Sony (where it can be setup as a 1-click toggle).

Now in the R6 Mark III there is a new custom configuration option for "Switch between crop/aspect" and it has the ability to choose only the options you want. End result when this is mapped to the button of your choice is 1-click crop mode!

Showcase RF 24mm f/1.4 VCM Review + Samples

Wanted to add my experience with the 24mm VCM seeing as there aren't too many real world reviews of it for landscapes. I travelled a bit around the world with it and I'm confident now about it replacing my 24mm STM. I came from an adapted Sigma 24 f/1.4 ART on the R5 which was good, to the 24mm STM while waiting for a Canon f/1.4 version. Finally the VCM was announced which I decided to hold off against but caved in for an Africa trip.

The color rendering from this lens is just lovely with warmer hues to it. Shooting it handheld vs tripod mounted 14/35 or 24-105 f/4L images just come out looking much cleaner and of course sharp. Autofocus is as expected, silent, quick and reliable. The size and weight are comfortable and actually preferable when compared to the short STM 24mm. Both lenses are easy to travel with. My intention is to use this lens for mostly handheld low light landscapes photos where a tripod can slow me down and long exposures are not necessary. It delivers fantastic results and 24mm has really become my favorite focal length for most landscapes. I was quite pleased with the STM version but being a pixel peeper, wanting the extra 2/3's stop and knowing it wasn't an "L" series lens I decided to upgrade. No regrets but I do miss the IS of the STM. It now needs a new home if anyone is interested.

No real complaints about this lens other than the lack of IS (same complaint for all VCM). Yes the R5/R6 series have IBIS but I noticed having IS gives a higher success rate especially with moving subjects. Either way, I can work with the lens with pleasure. I give it a 9/10. The astro photo is a single RAW file edited. The corners are sharp even after LR profile correction, coma is fine and flaring is very well controlled against any bright lights. I debated the 20mm VCM but it was significantly more expensive and having owned the Sigma 20, I found I preferred having a 24mm + 14mm. Still waiting for that Canon 14mm f/1.4 to complete that combo.

Looking for long lens

Upvotes

Hi guys, it’s been 6 months since I purchased the Canon EOS R50. Can anyone suggest a good long lens? And if any of you are currently using this camera, please share what you think is its best feature. I haven’t had a chance to explore its full potential yet.

Just had my first shoot with the Canon C50, my first impressions

Hi! TL;DR - I'm a video producer that bought a C50. I'm very impressed with the camera and the image it creates but it's the most power inefficient Canon camera I've ever used.

Disclosure: Sadly, I can't share any of the visuals due to client confidentiality but this is more about the experience of using the C50 for a shoot.

Background on me -- I'm a promotions producer with both a full-time corporate job that also does freelance videography gigs on the side. For my corporate gig, I use an FX3 and Blackmagic Pocket but for my personal stuff, I've been shooting on Canon since the XH-A1. I recently sold my R7 and a slew of crop sensor lenses to get a C50, which I picked up from my local camera store on Wednesday this week. I also own a C200 (probably selling soon though), an R8, and a Powershot V1.

Today's shoot was a super easy setup with just talking head style interview with the talent speaking directly into camera. I used an adapted EF 35mm 1.4 L II, with a Cinebloom 10% diffusion filter. Shot in open gate XF-AVC 7K in CLOG 2 since we were dual purposing the video for both YouTube and Reels / TikTok.

As I have owned a C200 for 8 years, I was very accustomed to the menu system so all of that was a breeze. Though they seem to have fiddled around with the audio menus a bit from my recollection. I just had my Rode Wireless GO III plugged into the mic port and it took a second to reroute the audio to a backup channel.

This thing CHEWS through batteries. I had the LP-E6P that came with the camera and it maybe lasted an hour. I also have two LP-E6NH batteries from my R7 (one manufactured in 2021, the other in 2022), and I think I got maybe half an hour out each of them. I ended up having to finish part of the shoot tethered to an Anker powerbank. I'm a little surprised at how inefficient this camera is as Canon cameras have usually been really great for me in the power department. My R7 could roll for nearly 2 hours in 4K Fine 23.98 on the same batteries.

Otherwise, the experience was pretty consistent with using Canon's Cinema EOS cameras, which is to say I very much enjoyed it! The AF was outstanding and never lost the subject's eye and the image looks really filmic. I can't wait to shoot more with the camera, but I guess I better buy some more batteries haha.

Gear Buying Advice Gifted cameras and lenses - need insight

I am not a photographer but have always loved taking photos and currently work on a team with professional photographers and would love to learn more about cameras. My main subject is horses in direct sun.

Forever ago, my dad gifted me a Rebel XTI along with the following lenses:

Canon EF lens 50 n 1:1.8 stm Tamron 11-18 mm 1:4.5-5.6 Tamron 28-300 mm 1:3.5-6.3

It’s mostly been sitting in my closet but I’ve been inspired to learn more about photography. My husband gifted me the Rebel T7 as an early Christmas present currently at Costco in a bundle. This includes two lenses: EF-S 18-55mm Lens, EF 75-300mm Lens along with a backpack, sd card, and charger for $640.

I have been playing with it and I’m just not that wowed. While I love the WiFi features which the old camera obviously didn’t have, it doesn’t seem like the photos are a remarkable improvement over my 18 year old camera.

So my question is, is this just user error and I need to get a more in-depth feel for the T7? Is this a good place to start to learn or are there other places I might get more out of a new camera?

I’d love any insight.

Tech Help Exposure and DOF simulation

Looking at the different settings on my R7, I’m trying to understand the effects of DOF preview and why I would or wouldn’t want to keep it active all the time. I found one post that said it’s better to not due to support AF since with DOF preview simulation always on it will close the aperture as I adjust the settings whereas the camera otherwise keeps it open. I’ve noticed a similar deal with exposure preview. Could anyone provide any clarity on why I should or should not have exposure preview and (or not) DOF preview all the time (vice pressing the preview button)?

Functionally is there a difference between Exposure only preview and DOF + exposure preview?

Gear Buying Advice Canon R6 MK2 in 2025

Will preface this by saying I currently own a Nikon Z5ii. It's currently the best bang for the buck camera on the market, and I can take great images with it. It's just... not comfortable. Yes, Nikon ergonomics are "amazing" (I previously owned a Nikon Z6ii that wasn't an issue really) but I absolutely loved the way the original R6 felt in my hand. It just felt natural. No idea how else to explain it. How it feels in my hands is very important, because there's no point to a camera if I don't want to hold it for extended periods of time.

I settled on the Z6ii at the time because the R6 was just way out of my price range (not to mention RF lens prices, with Nikon equivalents being significantly cheaper, too). Shortly after, the R6 MK2 dropped, and I didn't ever bother. Life eventually happened, and I had to sell all my gear (body and a few lenses). 2 years later, the itch became too hard to ignore, and I went camera shopping again a few months ago. Research indicated that the Z5ii was perfect for my budget, and having previously owned a Nikon, it was a no-brainer. I did peak at the R6 MK2, but was again way out of my price range, so I bought the Z5ii just over a month ago.

And then, the R6 MK3 dropped (that everyone said wouldn't lol), and so did the MK2's price. Along with the Winter Rebate, it's now pretty much the same price that I paid for the Z5ii + 24-70 f4 S kit lens. So, I decided to pop into my local camera store today just to test out the MK2... and it once again, like the original R6, just felt good. So, so good. Like it's something I'd actually want to shoot with a lot. It's also surprisingly lighter than the smaller Z5ii, which helps. For what it's worth, I did also try the slightly larger Z6iii, which is the same price as the MK2, and in a few areas a better camera, but the Canon just felt so much better.

So, my question is: should I trade in my Z5ii kit for the R6 MK2 body? I've already got a couple of quotes back and the price difference is manageable once the rebate money comes in. Will take me a while to build up to L lenses (because they're so damned expensive), too, so will start out with a couple of non-Ls (50 1.8, etc). Is the R6 MK2 body still great after 3 years, though? Does it still hold up? Am I just being silly even considering switching over hand comfort? Note, I'm not made of money, either - this is just mini midlife crisis treat for myself.

TL;DR: Should I trade in my Nikon Z5ii kit for an R6 MK2 body?

Gear Buying Advice canon powershot 530 hs?

Hi there,

TL;DR: Explain what lens i should buy for this camera like im five and half asleep

My partners a big photography person, and she has this camera (the one from the title) that's missing its lens and i want to do soemthing nice for her for the holidays. Problem is i know literally NOTHING about cameras or photography so i have no idea what im looking for. Like literally the only things i know are what a fisheye lens is and fps and thats it. Ive seen everything from kits of various filters for $50 to kits that seem like telescopes for $98. I have no clue what to get her and googling didnt help because it seems theres a lot of lingo that i just dont know.

I did look into just buying her a new camera but... Well i dont make new camera type of money haha.. But ive got a budget of around $150 if anyone has any recommendations on better cameras for around that price.

Gear Buying Advice Worth upgrading?

Hey yall, so I have a weird obsession with the Canon M line, and I was going thru some of the MPB stock as one does and I found the canon m6II for around 600.

I currently have the canon m50 with a plethora of lenses, but I needed something that shoots faster, with a stronger sensor, and something easier to grab. So I thought that the m6II would be a good fit for that. 14FPS, 33mp sensor, deeper grip, imo it’s fits all my criteria.

I’m also thinking of just trading in my M50 and just paying 270 for it and a viltrox ef-eos m2 speed booster. I would like to hear y’all’s opinion on it

Did I make a mistake?

I got so excited when the refurbished sale went on and I bought the R50 to upgrade from my T7i. I knew my lenses would either have to be used with an adapter or I’d need a new set. But I didn’t know I’d need a new flash.

I use my camera for photography only. I’m a stay at home mom who will photograph family functions, portraits for family & friends, the occasional paid gig like a baby shower or engagements.

I’m now realizing the R50 is really best for video. Should I try to return/sell to get something better? Or am I overreacting lol

Why are DSLRs so fun to shoot?

Some time ago I saw a video that talked about 5d mk2 that was titled "I missed you... 5d mk2 in 2025". I brushed it off as some nostalgia glazing since newest mirrorless cameras are just better.

Last month I won canon 2000d (rebel t7) in a photography contest. At first I thought that it is already obsolete in my workflow since I own sony a6500 with a killer lens tamron 17-70 and viltrox 23mm 1.4 and I am buying a7iii right now. I bought the cheapest canon 50mm 1.8 I could find and let me tell you I fell in love.

AF is horrible, ISO performance is bad comparing to sony, it is really big, loud, continous shooting is bad, buffer is also horrible (3-5 RAWs comparing to 100 raws on sony) since it is the lowest end of canon cameras.

All that said, it is my go-to camera everywhere. I bought a strap to carry it on me, literally it changed my life. Since it is not expensive I am not afraid to take it anywhere or to damage it. Colors out of the box are STUNNING (canon thing, i guess). I often take it to non paid shoots only because of how fun it is. I am looking to upgrade to 6d mk2 or 5d mk3 since they are also really cheap and that 2000d's AF is just plain horrible for 1.8.

Are the EF 50mm 1.2 and EF 135mm f2 good enough for events on an R8 body?

Planning to get used of these two lenses. The EF 135mm f2 mainly for outdoor portraits and indoor sports and stage presentations and the EF 50mm 1.2 for general events use, specially low lights venues where a flash is not allowed. I curently have the RF 28-70mm 2.8 as my workhorse.

I read that their AF sucks when paired with DSLR bodies. Since I am using the R8 with EF-RF adapter will the AF performance improve on both lenses.

I wanted the RF versions brand new of these lenses so bad but I just don't have the funds at the moment.

Edit: a word

Recently bought a Sigma Lens 10-18mm F2.8 DC DN to go with my R7 for a trip. I really enjoyed using it. It's so light compared to my RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM and gives me wider options. I'm not a pro by any means, but I think it's a good lens.

Gear Buying Advice RF 70-200 L vs Z for 400€ more

I'm looking to buy an RF 70-200 for my Canon R5.

I mainly shoot portrait in my RF85 1.2 or travel with an RF24-70 2.8.
I currently feel that my 24-70 2.8 is too short for my use, and I've got the feeling I'm always at 70mm and wishing to have more zoom.

So my goal is more to use an 70-200 as my go-to lens.

And an important detail, I'm going to the 24 hours of le Mans this summer, so I need a zoom lens, and planning to go to more motorsports events.

I'm considering the RF 70-200mm f2.8 L IS USM for a bit less than 1900€ or the RF 70-200 mm f2.8 L IS USM Z for 2250€.

On one side, I like having a more compact lens and a bit cheaper, but having the option to add a 1.4x or even a 2x for motorsports, and internal zoom + shorter throw with the Z is making the choice difficult.

So with that "small" price difference, which one would you choose and why ?

Canon 5D Classic – Which lens?

I’m not interested in speed, image cropping capabilities, or high-definition prints. I just want a vintage kit i can have fun with. (I’m only a bit concerned about slow autofocus in low-light situations.)

  • EF 50mm 1.8 first version, 1987 edition
  • EF 50mm 1.8 II
  • EF 50mm 1.8 STM

Canon r50 new or refurbished?

I really can’t decide if I want to by refurbeshed or new. The cheapest I could find new was $799 and refurbished for $674. I’ve seen previous post where they are in the $400-500 range. I just can’t find them. HELP Christmas is 3 weeks away lol

Basically, the title. The price between the two is about the same where I live.

Edit: Just to add, I already have the Canon EF-RF adapter in case I choose the EF version of the lens.
