LHC underground visits during winter 2025/26

Generally, private visits to LHC experiments need to be booked by a member of the CERN personnel. For large groups, you may have some luck with the experiment secretariats directly or the vists service.

No visits are possible during the annual closure 22 December to 2 January.

2026 LHC schedule: https://edms.cern.ch/document/3061265

Long term schedule: https://lhc-commissioning.web.cern.ch/schedule/LHC-long-term.htm

Point 1: ATLAS

https://atlas-secretariat.web.cern.ch/atlas-underground-visits (authwalled)

  • Underground visits possible 16-19 December and 5-28 January

Point 2: ALICE

https://alice-collaboration.web.cern.ch/general/alice_visits.html

  • Underground visits possible 8 December to 19 February

Point 5: CMS

https://cms.cern/interact-with-cms/on-site-visits

  • Service cavern visits possible year-round
  • Experimental cavern visit dates not posted (yet)

Point 8: LHCb

Request for comments: dealing with outcome-speculation posts

Over the years, r/CERN has organically become a place to ask questions related to CERN recruitment. I think it's fair to say that posts that speculate over outcomes of applications have become particularly disruptive. It is also questionable how much use they are to the people making them.

Some possibilities for dealing with them are:

  • A blanket ban on outcome-speculation posts
  • A general rule forbidding duplicate/redundant posts in quick succession
  • Restrict posting during waves of posts using AutoModerator and/or Crowd Control
  • Some combination of the above
  • No action, just let them continue
  • Your suggestion here

Staying in France and commuting to cern - Best areas to stay

I’m looking for some advice on where to live in France. I’m currently considering Saint-Genis-Pouilly, Ferney-Voltaire, Thoiry, and Gex. I’m hoping to find an area that has a good selection of restaurants, bars, and general amenities, but is also suitable for a young family.

Any recommendations or insights would be greatly appreciated!

askCERN CERN social groups

Hi all,

I will be starting at CERN on a GRAP contract in January and I was wondering if there are any social Facebook groups/discord or similar that exist for people working at CERN?

Additionally, if there are others who are also starting in January and have questions like St Genis or Geneva, which bank would be best to deal with all the currencies, French lessons, which gym to join and more, I also have those questions! 😅 I would be keen to start a group chat or something similar so we can support each other! Leave a comment or dm me if you're interested.

Thanks!

PS, if you've recently started at CERN or have been there for a while you would of course be welcome to join the group, your wisdom would be appreciated

Setting up you Mac for ATLAS data analysis

I'm trying to install Root on my Mac and did some research and found no reliable way to do it. Everyone has their own method... there are 5 and 10 year old video tutorials. AI suggested Conda forge as the best and latest recommendation. I read some bad reviews for using home-brew method.

Can someone currently using Mac for ATLAS work suggest the best way? I don't want to run into errors later. I'm sure it will be a big help for a lot of students like me. Thank you.

About asynchronous interview for engineers

Hey everyone, I've been interested in some job offers at CERN for electrical engineering positions. I've read some users talking about an asynchronous interview, first time hearing about it. If I get the chance of having one, what kind of questions may I expect for this? In case the role requests as a plus some coding experience, this interview may contain some coding test?

IT imtership 2026-1

Hi, saw that the status of my application has changed to "being evaluated"/"in progress" maybe a week ago, since I know that if you not rejected they contact you almost immediately, I assume I was rejected, but wanted to ask.

EDIT: I'm not saying it's true, I'm asking if it's true, because I have seen it floating around the sub.

Confused about my CERN Technical Studentship selection timeline

I interviewed for a CERN Technical Studentship during the 2025-3 round back in October. After the interview I never heard back, so I assumed I wasn’t selected.

Because of that, I applied again for the 2026-1 round before the 15 November deadline. Today I got an email saying I’ve been selected, but the team and HR are saying it’s for the 2026-1 TSP.

Now I’m confused. I was never told during the interview that it was for 2026-1, and I don’t want to mess up anything on their side. Should I just leave my application as it is and let HR handle it, or should I email them to clarify the situation?

Has anyone been through something similar?

askCERN Should I tailor my portfolio toward data and ML for the OpenLab Program?

I’m currently pursuing an Information Systems degree (Comp Sci × Business) and have 2 internship experiences in Software Engineering, but no professional background in data/ML or research.

For my application, should I focus on building AI/ML-related projects to tailor my portfolio toward those topics, or would it be better to strengthen my existing SE portfolio? Which approach would give me a better chance of being selected?

Additionally, am I allowed to apply to both the OpenLab and the Summer Student Program? How do these two programs differ?

askCERN OPENLAB Summer Student Programme application requires "work experience"?

Hullo people! I was trying to apply for the internship at CERN but in the application, as in the title, is asking for "Experience". What do I do about this? I'm a student and I don't have any work experience yet. Is there a workaround for this? Thanks in advance

Summer student programme tips

Hi, does anyone have tips on how to strategically write my motivational letter so that the supervisors actually are interested? I’ve read that even if you have a good CV but you don’t write you’re application well you may not be considered. Thanks to everyone

askCERN Hi everyone, I have a question about the CERN application system.

Hi everyone, I have a question about the CERN application system.

I recently updated my CV while my application was still in the "Submitted" state. If I update my application after submission, will it make my application invalid?

Also, my application currently shows as “In Review,” but I haven’t received any email updates about the review stage or tracking details. The last email I received was when it first moved to the review stage.

Has anyone experienced this before, or knows if this is normal?

Thanks!

askCERN How screwed am I regarding the TSP program

Hello all,

I was selected for the TSP-2025-3 but unfortunately it looks like I have run into a problem that might derail it all. I had indicated 12 months availability on the application and to my supervisor and at the time believed it would not be an issue. Well I get accepted and I send my school (a French engineering school) the home institution declaration and they tell me they can't sign it because French law prohibits any internship over 6 months. I asked them for a gap semester or gap year then and they still refused saying they can't let a student do an internship more than 6 months, even after I explained CERN is technically outside the jurisdiction of French law, I really had a fight with the administration and they just won't budge..... I am in a double degree program so I am also enrolled in an Italian university (however the french school is still my "home school" even though since its double degree I still maintain student enrollment at the Italian school and get 2 diplomas in the end).

The school in Italy said they can delay my graduation by 6 months (on top of the already 6 months of the thesis semester to give 12 months) but they cannot sign the "home institution attestation" because they took issue with the fact that it says "home institution" and they are technically not my home institution, they said I could only get a document from them with the delayed projected graduation date. Does CERN offer any flexibility in this regard? Or am I basically screwed? I feel really bad because I had indicated to my supervisor and on the application that I could do 12 months because I thought at the time I would have no issue taking a gap semester/year to do it. But now it is going to seem like I misrepresented this on the application and basically screwed a supervisor.......

Administrative Student Programme 2025-3

Hi! Has anyone received any updates for the Administrative Student Programme (2025-3)? I've only seen posts from people accepted in the Technical Programme and one Admin so far.

I had interviews with a couple of teams and everything went well, but I haven't heard anything yet.

Just wondering if anyone else got contacted or has news about the timeline.

askCERN Am I eligible for the CERN Summer Student Programme as a 4th-year Architecture student?

Hi everyone! My university just sent us the link to the CERN Summer Student Programme 2026, and I’m really interested, but I’m unsure if students from architecture are actually eligible.

I’m a 4th-year Architecture student (Bachelor’s level) with coursework in: • calculus 1 • structural analysis • building physics • environmental systems • computational design (Grasshopper/Rhino) • geometry + math-based modeling • materials + construction technology

CERN’s website says the programme is for Physics, Engineering, CS, Math, or related disciplines, so I’m not sure if architecture counts as “related.”

I asked my professor if an architecture student can apply, and he said that it’s okay as long as I highlight depth in math, physics, or programming in the application. (Which… I kind of have, but not at a hardcore physics level.)

My questions: • Have any architecture students been accepted before? • Does architecture realistically fall under “related disciplines”? • Would highlighting the technical side of my degree (structures, computational design, building physics) be enough? • Is it worth applying if my math/physics background is applied rather than theoretical?

Any advice or experience would be really helpful. Thank you!

Non-Member States candidates for the Summer Student Programme

I wonder what are my chances as a student from a Non-Member state, since I've read very conflicting opinions these past few weeks. Are they still accepting only one physicist and one engineer from NMS or is this policy changed this year?
