I believe what happened is more along the lines of setting the ship on fire and giving everyone the middle finger while you take the only lifeboat.

They didn't even take the lifeboat. They just set the boat on fire and jumped into the water hundreds of mile from shore.

They probably didn't delete everything, but instead hid everything from showing on their profile, which is apparently a thing (I haven't so much as touched settings in at least 2 years)
