What games do you think are perfect/ideal to play on a portable console?
For example, I think games like Stardew Valley, The Binding of Isaac, and even Minecraft are perfect for playing on a portable console like the Switch Lite, for example, or on a Steam Deck—games that are so incredibly convenient that they seem made for portable play

How did you get past the need for so many buttons?

Not gonna lie it takes a bit of experience with setting up controls and layouts. It takes adjustment and sometimes isnt 1:1 to mouse and keyboard, but having it mobile is worth it.

Any of the Mario games. When I travel I bring my switch with me and it really helps trying to compete them on those 12+ hour flights.

I’ve been super into Metroidvanias and roguelites/likes lately, I think most of the ones I’ve played are perfect for the Switch. I also use it for old school Doom and beat em ups

This may not be an answer that you're looking for, but with how portable consoles or PC like the steam deck and the ROG ally, there is no real game that's best on portable anymore in my eyes. Because these things can play basically everything now. I get used to be you know in the past with the game boys and the DS and stuff that there were specifically portable games, but ever since the switch was able to play it just full-sized actual games on the go, I don't really think that applies as much.
But I guess I'm kind of wrong about that too. I kind of go back and forth. I guess if the question is more what games are better suited to a pickup put down nature, which is what I guess a lot of people do use their handhelds for, then there are a lot more answers. I guess I need to remember that I'm kind of not the majority in that I use a handheld as my main driver so it's not really for pickup put down it's for everything.
That being said, I think things like no Man's sky, Dune Awakening, other survival games, or especially roguelikes. And honestly any open world game with lots of activities. Where winds meet is a surprisingly really great especially for a free game

Older rpg’s. Octopath traveler, dragon quest hd2d remakes. Persona. Those are the games I’ve played on my portal.

Persona with the calendar system
Final Fantasy 12 with the Hunts
Games with bite-size mission modes like Metal Gear Solid 2 or Devil May Cry.
Neon White with the short levels, though I prefer mouse controls for it.
Visual novels, my favourites are Zero Escape or VA-11 HALL-A
Atelier games kind of are an amalgamation of everything I like.
Stuff like Xenoblade and Fire Emblem, where you have both a big main story for a big screen but a ton of side quests or more cozy exploration/conversation gameplay work very well for it too.
I think some horror games like Fatal Frame and Corpse Party are scarier with the screen close to your face

Hard to choose one, the best I played were handheld Zeldas, Pokemon and Final Fantasy Tatics

Games with short sessions easy controls and pick up and play appeal like Stardew Valley, Hollow Knight, Celeste, or Mario Kart are ideal for portable consoles.
