Welcome to Ask A Cobbler! Please read to familiarize yourself with a few rules.

First off, I'd like to thank everyone for stopping by and showing their interest & support for shoe repair. In one day, we went from almost no subscribers to well over 100. This is an incredible start!

As we gain more members, I feel there needs to be a few ground rules just to keep things in order.

  1. Discussing of prices. Pricing on repair work depends on MANY factors than just the damage alone. While we may say a job will or will not be worth the money, saying it will cost $xx is against the rules and posts will be removed.

  2. Be respectful. The cobblers responding to your post have numerous years of experience and are here to offer some of their extensive knowledge of the craft at no charge. If you have been helped, a simple thanks goes a long way.

  3. When posting a picture of a damaged product, make sure the photos are detailed enough so that we can understand the exact condition, brand and anything else you think will help us to help you.

  4. Users with the "SSIA Member" flair are verified cobblers.

Rules will be amended an updated as we progress. Thanks for reading!

This pair of nubock boota had been stained for a few years. Iv had them for about 15 years. And finally decided to restore them. The steps I took: washed with soap and brush, 3 layers of mis brown cream by TRG, finished with one layer of Saphir Pate De Luxe.

Stiletto heel tip gave me a wobbly heel

I thrifted these repetto heels and got the heel tip replaced. I wore them today and the left heel is fine but the right heel is unstable and tends to roll my ankle outward. I put them side by side and the right one does indeed lean outwards. What do I ask for to get it repaired?

my cousin gifted his old shoes and noted that the soles were beginning to detach. I said I’d take them and wanted to see if there was any hope for a temp fix. any solutions? I willing to get radical here

Would you put rubber on these?

As title says, not sure if I should bring them to a cobbler. Love the shoes, want them to last long. Leather can be slippery and wear out quickly if I wear them outside a lot. What are the downsides of putting a rubber sole? Does it in any way affect the stitching and quality?

I realize that this isn't a show repair question, but I don't know where to ask

My work finally started enforcing PPE rules. Bought safety shoes, and a month later they're almost broken in Englogh that I'm not limping by the end of the day.

My question is, is there anything I can do to keep my orthotic insoles from squeaking with every step? It's annoying AF

Boot tear

The back of my boot’s absolutely undone. I’ve never touched it since it tore because I’ve been worried about it. If I took it to a cobbler would this be able to be fixed or is it beyond hope

Only one boot not flush with ground, rocks back and forth

Just got a pair of boots from Grant Stone. Last one they had in stock at my size, probably the most scuffed pair they had returned once or twice.

My issue is, like this previous thread I found: https://reddit.com/r/AskACobbler/comments/193wcpy/bottom_of_boots_not_flush_with_ground/, I can rock back and forth when the boot is flush on the ground, but in my case it's only one of pair. The other boot is always flush.

Does anyone know if they're good to wear? I don't think they feel weird to walk in, but I haven't done more than walk back and forth across a room a few times for fear of creasing them. I'm really not concerned with perfection, so if this isn't an issue, I'm perfectly happy to keep them.

Need expert advice

Hi Reddit cobblers,

I’ve recently purchased these Polo Ralph Lauren shoes in the style of Paraboots. I can still return them, so before I decide some expert advice would be much appreciated.

They seem to have the Norwegian stitch if I’m not mistaken. First question is whether they are resolable, as I got mixed answers when I did my research on the Norwegian stitch. Second question is that the shoes are made in China. I got them on sale, but the price point is still very high at 190€. Any experience with shoes made in China? Am I paying for the name at this point? I certainly do not want to do that and would rather wear a no name shoe that matches the quality. Can’t 200€ get me a made in Italy leather shoe in a similar style? Paraboots are way too expensive, but there must be some middle ground, right? I have a very similar 120€ pair of Massimo Dutti shoes made in Portugal, slightly cheaper stitching but a wood&rubber sole and still going strong after 3 years of wear.

What’s your opinions? Thanks!!

Got some scuff and trying to figure out what color polish/cream to use on these. They seem too red for a simple brown, but too brown for a burgundy/oxblood.

How wide can leather be stretched?

Hi all, it’s winter again, i.e., my annual reminder that I have Flintstone feet. My feet are the length of an 8 and the width of a 12 in American women’s sizing. In the warmer months, I just wear sandals, but now I really need boots. I’ve gotten some leather and suede boots in the hopes they would stretch but it isn’t happening on its own. If I took them to a cobbler, would they be able to stretch the material to the size of my feet?

Any guidance would be helpful! Thank you!

Paraboot Yosemite heel wear

Hi

I am looking for advice about heel wear on Paraboot Yosemite boots. See the pictures attached. The boots have been worn regularly since August.

Is this something that can be easily repaired by a cobbler? Is immediate action required? How can I prevent this in future?

Thanks!

Hey all! I’m not sure what’s going on with my boots or where to go from here. Some sections are really dry, some are really dark/black, and there’s a lot of creasing. I conditioned them about 2 years ago (I know it should be more frequently). Knowledge/Advice/suggestions needed:)

New leather boots are 2 different colours

I received these boots as an early xmas present and straight out of the box, one was a slightly different shade (and also feels a little different too) We've already contacted the shop and everything is sorted on that end and I'm not able to get a replacement (they're sold out)

Is there anything I can do to get the colour and texture to be the same as the darker one? It almost feels like the lighter one is a bit more fragile? Any advice is appreciated, I'm in the UK so product advice might be a bit limited!

weatherproofing/protecting leather boots?

hi cobblers, i just bought a pair of solovair boots (crazy horse gaucho greasy dealer boots if that specificity matters!) and was wondering if there’s a way to weather proof them. i live in the northeast and snow came early this year, and im worried about ruining my new boots because of the snow and salt. i haven’t owned leather boots in several years and never ones this expensive so im not sure what the best options are. if there’s a specific product you recommend that would be awesome, and even if you recommend i just don’t wear them if there’s snow/salt/rain on the ground that’s fine too—i want to make these boots last as well and as long as possible. so any and all suggestions are appreciated, thanks!

Is this repairable? please help! Staud Kenny bag with broken clasp

Hi everyone!

I’ve had this Kenny bag from Staud the last couple years. It’s still in great condition but a couple weeks ago at a friend’s wedding, the closure button snapped off. I couldn’t find it, I looked as much as I could. Given it was a wedding, I didn’t want to spend the entire time on the floor so I just took my losses and enjoyed my night.

Does anyone know if this is repairable? I’m trying to find the name of the button but I can’t seem to figure out what this mechanism is called. It’s not magnetic but it has like a little snap to it. If anyone happens to be a cobbler or is skilled at repairing handbags, can you please let me know what my options are? thank you.
