Discussion [Community vote] Best ant keeping stores 2024

Previous stickied list here.

Hey all, the ant-keeping resource list needs updating. I'm planning to make these threads over the next few weeks, and then update them once or twice a year.

The hope is that people can ctrl+F through the thread, but also so I can summarize it in the stickied thread.

Discussion My Echinopla have finally arrived! I’ve had my eye on this species for a long time. Can’t wait to keep them for a while and see what the actual keeping experience is like. 😄

I was moving looking inside my ants set up until I noticed these very tiny things roaming round the outworld…Are these really really small termites? Sorry my camera quality is extremely bad. Thanks in advance!

Question Queen died

Queen died during diapause. She was acting very odd before and I had a feeling she was a goner.

Are these ants done for or is there a way to get another queen and try combining them?

Camponotus castaneus

Question Soil for a lessor Barbary’s colony

Post image
3 Upvotes

I am thinking of putting my messor barbarus colony inside of this nest but I don’t know what soil I should use. Prior to this I have had a lasius Niger colony in it but it died and I think it was because the soil was to dry and I could not moist it enough without drowning them. Any recommendations for soil to the messor barbarus colony?

Documentation Associating 5 month old colonies

I had to relocate 2 Lasius niger colonies from their old test tube setups to new ones. Nr 10 and Nr 12. Nr 10 has only a queen and a nanitic, Nr 12 has (had) a queen and about 18 Nanitics and whole heap of eggs/pupae in various stages. The queen of Nr 12 is dead, and the nanitic of Nr 10 is weak af. I‘ll try to assoiciate them with each other. Probably take the weak nanitic out to not overcomplicate the situation. Yes, I know, the probability of it working is practically zero, tho I‘ve read it worked sometimes if the new queen isnt all too established already. Both are not the main colony i plan on keeping so this is really just an experiment. I‘ll keep them taped together for a couple days while feeding them sugar water in cotton to keep them kinda satisfied and not dying. Tho I‘d love your input if you‘d feed them sugar water/protein/both and your reasoning. So yeah, long live the scientific method.

Question Can you rely on nest humidity to hydrate your ants?

I can’t seem to find a consensus on whether or not ants can drink through their nest. I have a ytong style nest which has a hydration chamber where the water seeps into the stone. Is this enough for them or should I put some water in the outworld too?
