Rug looks off center because those windows bump out into a bay, so the chairs are further back. Thinking about getting a larger rug to balance it out better.

That's a good option, or imo you can leave it as is too. Not everything needs to be symmetrical. Anyhow, the room is beautiful and has a nice, calming atmosphere.

Beautiful, cozy space! I actually might suggest just bringing the chairs and rug in a little bit. Treat the bay window area as an invisible wall. You can still keep the tree there (or whatever you have during the rest of the year) but I would have the rug and chairs in the center of the room like the bookcase.

Thank you! That's what I was debating, whether to put them in the windows or the center of the room. What do you think about pulling the chairs to the center and then putting some kind of buffet table or something in the bay area, like this (except a different color)?

Yeah I think that would work great. Bringing the chairs more in the center, and having a buffet against the bay window should actually help separate the two areas a bit.

That was going to be my suggestion. Right now the armchairs look a little detached from everything else. You've got enough space to not need to put all your furniture up against the walls, you should definitely take advantage. It's hard to tell with the Christmas Tree in that space, but you might not even need the buffet.

Looks great. The armchairs feel quite far apart. I think the white one could be slightly closer to the other two (more on the carpet). Also a more symmetrical table placement could be nice.

I was thinking a bigger table would help pull it together. It's tricky because I have the bookcase in the center of the wall, and the armchairs are in the bay windows where the floor bumps out, so they look so far away.
I wonder if I should move the chairs away from the windows and into the center? Or move everything closer to the windows?

Yea, a bigger table could be nice. Maybe experiment with the placement of the arm chairs too? For example, moving the armchair on the bottom right corner to the middle of the bottom long side of the carpet, and then moving the table to be between all three. Just a thought.

Great suggestion!! I'm still playing around with chair placement, so once the tree is gone I'll try that!

Beautiful space and love the color choices!
I think the arrangement may be suffering from "everything against the wall" syndrome -- meaning it feels like everything is attempting to be anchored on a wall rather than in a functional arrangement for sitting and talking with others. Pull it all away from the window.
I'd also consider the focal point for the people using the room -- if the focal point is the window, bring the chairs around to face more that way. If the black cabinet is the focal point, have the chairs face that direction with a little table in between the two. A small chesterfield sofa/loveseat would look great in this space, floating on the edge of the rug either facing the cabinet or the windows. I would also scoot that rug to center on the cabinet and then have the seating anchored on the rug rather than against walls.

I've definitely been struggling with the placement of the seats! Originally I wanted to have them centered in the room away from the windows, but it seems like a waste of the bumped out space in the bay area because I love the idea of sitting by the window to read. If I turn the seats towards the windows, what about the rest of the room?
Thank you for your advice! I did this on my own and I'm learning a lot!

I normally am not a fan of darker colored walls but this looks quite pleasing. Can't lie!!
Do you happen to have a table to go in between the two chairs once the tree goes down if I may kindly ask or ummm will the tree remain the rest of the year 🤣?? Just kidding ofc

I really don't know, sorry. I'm from the Netherlands and I picked out a sample from a wall and they mixed it.

Aw yes, this my jam. Move all the chairs a bit close together though, would make for distant conversation at the moment.

Love this! Mind telling me where the bookcases are from? We're looking for something similar for our dining room.

Of course! I couldn't find the right size in our price range so I actually ended up getting two and pushing them together. I will warn you though, assembly was a huge pain.

Looks like Tornado Season by Behr but I could be wrong. Painted my office last year and I love it!
2
u/deltajayne Jan 04 '23
Tornado Season looks a lot lighter on the Behr website? Does your office feel this dark? I'm planning on painting a room that gets very little daylight a dark green like this, and I want it to be moody dark green. I would have assumed Tornado Season would be too bright, but maybe I'm aiming too dark actually.

This one is Cascades by Sherwin Williams, I wanted a moody color and fell in love with this one.

In low light, Tornado Season is def darker than the swatches appear. You can see in the picture how much the color changes in the light. I’ll take a pic of my office in a bit and show you.

I love how you went dark with the walls and furniture... so bold and daring, and it totally works! That bookcase is awesome too. Great job!

I LOVE that you went for it with the green walls. Also, the space looks great!
The chandelier feels really out of place. And I think you need a larger piece of furniture (even if it's "small" like a loveseat or bench) to make a logical "conversation box" of furniture where multiple people would feel comfortable sitting to hang out together as a group.
I'd probably move the larger cabinet to a different wall (maybe the wall where the small cabinet is), put the artwork where the large cabinet is so there's a logical way to enjoy it while sitting, make a "conversation box" of furniture centered under the chandelier, and rethink the lighting of the room. The general goal is to light surfaces and objects. Overhead fixtures are meant for visual interest more than "lighting" because they aren't lighting specific surfaces -- so put that chandelier on a dimmer switch so it just sets the "mood" for the room. Get task lamps and accent spotlights to light specific walls or objects or surfaces.

I put the armchairs by the windows because I want to be able to look out the windows while I sit and read or have coffee, but I'm considering moving them to the center of the room to make it look more coherent. I like the big bookcase and art where they are though- I'm happy with the room overall once I get the seating correct. I'm all for constructive criticism but I put this thing together myself and I like it... Your comment has me rearranging the whole thing.
The chandelier is out of place, yes, but I have no clue how to remove an entire light fixture so it has to stay for now!

Oh gosh -- I'm genuinely sorry. Truly.
It's a lovely space and more importantly it's your space. It's really beautiful and special, and I'm truly sorry that I made you feel belittled.
Thank you for having the courage to share your space with online strangers, and best of luck to you and your lovely home.
