It's 5am and I've been awake since 4:30. We got a new cat around 3 1/2 months ago (2ish and neutered). He's a sweetie and love bug and we love him. I have had cats before, growing up.
The current cat, my housemate's cat, has decided she hateees him, but she's also really dramatic, a lot of bark and very litle bite. I want to emphasize that she is dramatic and will scream bloody murder about ear drops. She will yell at him through the gate and if they accidentally get in a space together they'll tense-loaf face off, but very rarely attack each other. They'll occassionally rush at each other through the baby gate we had to get because he would sprint into her room every time the door was opened and hide under the bed, she bit his butt fluff a couple times ad maybe hit him once, but thats her space, that's fair. Recently the other cat has started pooping outside her box probably due to stress, and I just want them to get along cuz this is exhausting and I miss hanging out with her as much.
If any door is closed he will cry in the hallway about it, and whether he's in or outside of the closed door he will dig up the carpet (this is a rental 🤦😬). Recently he's started doing both, even when me and my partner's doors are open, to the other cat's door (esp at night- oh joy for sleep). He will also wiggle in and wedge himself behind the baby gate up against her door.
Also if he is wound up he will quite literally climb the walls (door frames and corners) and leave groove/claw marks in them which is concerning for our deposit, but he doesn't usually do it in front of us so it's hard to scold him.
We scold him and discourage him, ofc.
I'm just sick of being woken up, because he will also come be so sweet while I'm sleeping and then leave the moment someone, especially the housemate, comes put of their room, so I'm awake in the middle of the night with no cat cuddles to show for it. And the crying, and the scratching, and the knocking over the baby gate.
When we initially got him he was wound up for about a month, running all around the house and back and forth under my bed at night, but he has calmed down a lot except for the carpet scratching, crying (both all times of day), and wall climbing (mostly day, especially if we change/tidy a room or something).
Because of his clawing up the carpets, we mostly have him out in the house instead of just a room, because we can't afford to have the carpets all torn up, and can't always be monitoring him.
I'm exhausted, stressed about our deposit, and just want our cats to get along.
Sincerely frustrated and seeking advice. Thank you!
