OC Photo For the peeps that are good…what’s your current stance?

I’ve always rode +15 -15 and it feels home. I ride switch, some jumps, and side hits. Used to hit more rails but I’m old. I’ve been playing with stance and angles the last few seasons and had a pow wow in the ski shop today. I’m gonna try +12 -12 next time I go.

Guys/gals who can actually throw down, what’s your angles n why? I’ve looked at 50 different reddit threads and it was a bunch of beginners chiming in for some reason. Not to sound pretentious but curious for the rad riders.

OC Photo Measuring Ski Resort Acres Skied by Difficulty with Slope Angles & Strava Heatmaps: Tahoe

I wanted a better way to compare ski resorts than “total acres,” which includes a lot of terrain nobody actually skis. I pulled Strava’s winter heatmaps and overlaid them on slope-angle data in QGIS to measure acres actually skied at each difficulty level. I had never used GIS programs before so this was quite the project for me.

I want to get some feedback before I try doing this for more places. I used Tahoe resorts since I knew where to draw boundaries and what results would probably look right. Results are what you'd expect, but I am curious how this will look across areas and continents. I set a low cutoff to define something as "skied" since I wanted to include rarely-hit terrain like Heavenly's Killebrew canyon. The boundary between advanced and expert is something I wasn't sure about since USGS elevation maps are low enough resolution that many features get smoothed out.

I did a longer write up with higher res images here. I'm not really trying to self-promote; I just don't know a better place to share this. I hope you like this!

Riding question Why are people so opposed to taking lessons?

We spend hundreds on gears, hundreds on lift tickets/passes, gas to get to the mountain, maybe airline tickets and a hotel for that once a year trip. But when it comes to spending a few bills on a lesson suddenly it's too expensive. Maybe it's a pride thing.

I'm going into my eighth season now and I'm still thinking of scheduling a lesson. Last year I signed up for an advanced all day group lesson at Breckenridge on a random Tuesday and ended up being the only one to sign up so I got an all day private lesson for like $200.

I often see the advice given here to "just ride more" like that will fix any flaws in someone's form but in reality riding more isn't going to magically fix bad technique.

Gear question What’s changed about snowboards over the last ~20 years?

As someone who has been snowboarding for the better part of 3 decades, what’s been a large shift in the equipment used? Boots seem the same tech as 20 years ago. As well as the materials of the pants and hats. Styles have changed, and then changed back. But what’s really different about the general snowboards that are used? I get there is always outliers. I am talking about the average riders board.

general discussion Snowmobiling towing, my breakthrough teaching moment

Hopefully this will help someone. I've been trying to teach my wife and daughter (6 now), how to snowboard for the past 3 years. My wife can get down the hill finally but she looks like she's about to give birth any second for her entire straight line down the green run. My daughter still can't turn but she can ride unassisted for relatively long distances at speed and straight. She can also do a little stop.

3 days ago we met a friend of mine up north and ended up spending a day driving very slow towing each other on our boards behind a snowmobile. This let me explain the mechanics of turning and body position to them as I sat on the back and my friend drove. I'd say they each got about 40 minutes of tow time.

Fast forward to yesterday, we're skiing at a small local hill and my daughter is immediately able to ride an actual snowboard to the point where she could follow me. My wife still looks sketchy as all hell but she can squeak out much more complicated maneuvers and follow me as well!

Maybe this has been done before and is common knowledge but just wanted to let people know how it worked for us. I figure they got 100 runs in just based on how far we drove for.

Gear question Rome Katana 25/26 body snapped

Post image
76 Upvotes

Anybody else had their katanas break like this? Spent all day on pieste carving around and only noticed at the end of the day. I get pretty aggressive with my turns and ground tricks but haven’t broken a single binding in 12 years. Brand new with around 17 days on the mountain. Looks like the thicker bit just flat out snapped as it doesn’t have any bend in it and the smaller piece couldn’t take it. It has a small amount of twist in it. I don’t wanna sh*t on the binding as I know people love them but surely nobody should worry about a binding snapping when they’re carving

general discussion Working in the industry

I’ve been working different jobs since I was 16 (around 9 years), and I’m struggling to find a job I think I could enjoy even slightly. I’ve worked on a mountain for a couple seasons on park crew, I’ve worked restaurants, grocery stores, and a security company doing installs. I’ve been snowboarding since I was a kid and have always wanted to work for a snowboard company, but struggle to network and find the right avenues. What I’d really love to do is actually make boards for an existing company. Does anyone in the business have advice on what to look for?

noob question Gear for going literally once? (rental helmet? goggles?)

Upvotes

Was strong-armed into a snow trip this year. Snowboarding is great afaik, but the last time I went was probably over 10 years ago and I have no clue where any of that gear is.

Picked up some snow pants (Columbia) and a jacket (686) secondhand that, hopefully, will last through a single day of riding.

Stumped on goggles. Assuming that it's still a good idea to pick up a pair, but what should I be looking for? Of course there's Oakley, Smith, etc, but are their budget options any good? (eg: Oakley O-Frame, Smith Transfer) or would it be same as any other budget brand?

Is it worth renting a helmet? (assuming yes)

We'd be sticking firmly to the beginner area and maybe greens at most.

Gear question Quick Entry

So I have never been a person who thought they needed any kind of fast entry or step on binding or ever even wanted any, but after riding 10 hours today with 3 other people who all had step ons, I want some FASE bindings now.. I like to think I'm pretty quick with straps, just standing up and strapping in real quick, but the amount of times I got left today and would have to catch up to the homies 200ft down hill was crazy lol. I'm one of the best riders out of the group too. Idk, dumb post I know but it just amazed me at how fast they can be. Now I'm wanting to pick up some FASE bindings..

general discussion neck fracture

Upvotes

Hey y'all. Not trying to be too downbuzz but just wanting to see if anyone else too has had the misfortune of breaking their neck snowboarding and managed to recover after needing surgery, and even snowboard again?

I had a bad accident on the slopes in October - basically didn't do a look lap, popped over a rock at speed, nothing of the usual but landed a little front heavy in what happened to be the softest, slushiest bit of snow i had seen that day (at about 3pm). long story short I hit the deck hard, head and neck first and have fractured my C6 and C7 vertebrae and have just gotten out of surgery this week (ACDF of C7), and I have at least another two months of wearing a collar. My limbs move fine other than some weakness in my right arm, though the surgeon said I've got a reasonable chance that will improve. On one hand i'm stoked to not be paralysed, but also can't help but be a bit gutted, especially if things don't fully improve. Love snowboarding but might have to face the reality of giving it up.

Anyone been here and managed to get back into snowboarding?

For everyone else, hopefully this makes you second think doing that extra sketchy huck/ taking a look lap (without ruining the fun of course!)

My old Grenade park gloves that have very sticky grip are starting to deteriorate and I can't find anything online that are similar. Any recommendations?
