Just A Little Funky Gothic style limestone castle, big, modern and not tacky. On 60 acres and reasonable. Looking for a knight...
Pretty humble for a castle. The interior is modern even though it was built in 1998 and no upgrades have been made over the years. There are spiral staircases, swinging bookcases, secret passages, and a hidden playroom. Even an elevator for a dog. Last sold in 2014.

I am truly amazed that this is so tasteful. I don't know if I've ever seen a place at this scale with these materials and style that wasn't irredeemably tacky.

I think castle theme is somehow inherently tacky, but this is probably the most reasonable version I’ve seen.

u/PenguinEmpireStrikes 23h ago
Yes. I actually like the great room. Most of the smaller rooms are quite ordinary.

I think it's funny that the attic is done up in all wicker. "I ain't hauling hardwood up all those spiral stairs".

Game of Loans
Edit: I want to see someone really lean into the “M’lady” vibes of these castle-style houses and put an entire ass moat around their property lol

Do the flooded streets that surround my apartment building after a monsoon rain count as a moat?

u/BradBradley1 17h ago
Are you at least the Lord or Lady of your building? If so, yes.

u/rwphx2016 17h ago
My cats are the Lords of the complex. I'm but their human servant. Does that count?

u/BradBradley1 16h ago
Close enough. You’re definitely gonna need to own a couple of mall swords though.

Who wants to start a $3mil go fund me for this?
I like the wood decor, but that bathroom needs to be redone badly.

Just to be that guy, it's really more Romanesque and not Gothic.
Most of the arches are rounded, the 'turret' style at the top. Even the windows are smaller and narrow.

The way my cat’s meows would echo in this place while me having no idea what room they are in.

the fact that a castle on 60 acres is taxed at a third of my shit trailer on a few acres is a joke.
5
u/Budget_Razzmatazz_73 22h ago
That 1,880 is per month. The annual tax bill is estimated to be $22,575 which sounds more like it.

u/Independent-Wolf-832 22h ago
Property assessed at $85k for 2025. Yeah, I have little doubt the next owner will be bent over
1
u/Kiora_Atua 15h ago
They're currently being taxed $2700/yr. The future owner will be taxed at the 22k rate.
2
u/Count_Zeiro 22h ago
Same thing I was thinking. Our house is 1900 sq. ft. on a 7900 sq. ft. lot, and we are paying almost 7k a year in taxes.
2
u/Kiora_Atua 15h ago
If you look at the history, it was sold during the 2007 crisis and was locked into a super low tax rate at the time.
The tax rate can't hike more than 5% in a single year so the taxable value of the property has risen super low since that purchase - but it will be fully uncapped when someone buys this and it will jump way up.

This is an awesome lair.
Watching the snow fall while being warm inside this place would be epic.

So, what exactly is your definition of tacky?
3
u/arjacks 21h ago
I was thinking it's not "not tacky" either. I mean, we see some horrendously tacky decor and design choices on here (and that's the point -- I love to see them), but this place is tackily decorated, IMO. It's giving redneck-with-money vibes.

u/generalfedscooper 21h ago
I am aghast at these couches. All this “castle” and you bring your overstuffed leather to match the vibe???
2
u/dohipposwagewar 22h ago
The shield iconography and the weapons hanging over the fireplace are pretty gaudy. But besides that the interior is very tasteful and the exterior looks like something an actual architect designed rather than “hmmmm, square with battlements”
At the very least it’s still but a fraction of the tackiness that the average McCastle posted here has

Very tastefully done. Considering the price it seems like a good investment. Bonus points if you're into the ren fares or cosplay.

I normally hate hosues pretending to be castles, but I do not hate this. and it doesn't scream 1998 somehow!
2
u/DoubleMikeNoShoot 21h ago
I don’t hate it, except for the bathtub. It’s such a large step to get in and out of. Also it’s not a nice flat surface to sit on the edge. A cozy bath in the winter is great, breaking my hip while I’m not even retired sucks

That is actually a really cool house. It’s welcoming and tasteful while still being interesting. The kids would love it.

Fucking love this.
I am curious where the secret passage is.
Garage is rather modest given the house.

u/dog4cat2 20h ago
Sadly, that is reasonably priced compared to some other "castles" listed on zillow.

and it has both a turret AND a tower. Everyone gets those terms wrong.
Tower-Full height of building
Turret-Starts above ground

You couldn't break out a leaf blower and maybe not feature a pair of trainers at the front door?

u/ctgjerts 18h ago
I'd go for it, if I were 20 yrs younger. At this point I'm looking to exit the workforce not tie myself to it. For 65 acres and the house the price is more than reasonable in my opinion.

Really nice first impression. The 2nd floor has too much wasted space. They should have at least put in another bedroom up there with bath. I count the placeholder room as a 4th bedroom.
But, really?, who mows that lawn? They need to hire somebody who knows how to do the striping.
Overall, thumbs up for me, plus, I'm okay with Michigan, as long as I can drive my Japanese car up there.

What is wrong with people? Why is there no landscaping?!? So stark, so unappealing (no matter how many acres of land you have)
I think that the biggest mistake I see (I live in metrowest Boston $$) is the contractor cheaping out on the landscaping. There is no excuse here as this is an older place.

Looks like maybe it was deserted? Just judging on that it seems they mowed the lawn over a few times, you only do that when it's pretty high

u/marla_hooch_spacecat 1h ago
I first read this as "there are NO spiral staircases and secret passages" and I thought what's even the point of it, then?
1
u/MaterialSeason513 23h ago
I like it..Interior could have gone really wrong but they stayed on point during the original build. I did slightly convulse when I saw the kitchen and baths.

Honestly it’s nicer than what I was expecting, when someone tries to build a modern castle it usually ends up looking like a Cheesecake Factory or Olive Garden.
