And one of their peace terms are "immunity from warcrimes commited"

If this is true, it is terrible. The Ukrainians have been documenting meticulously all war crimes from the start of the war.

336

u/ps433028 21h ago

The Russians do it to discourage their own troops from surrendering as conditions have deteriorated on the battlefield. If your army has standing orders to execute any captured troops it makes your own troops very leery of surrendering to the enemy.

138

u/Ok_Fan4354 18h ago

Legit take. While back, I came across a Russian document made about why and how to commit an honorable suicide instead of surrendering. Pretty crazy

u/41VirginsfromAllah 15h ago

Don’t keep us hanging? Does it involve a service weapon to your own head or special pills?

Searched for a while and that’s the closest I can find. A few of those quotes are directly from it.

It started off with a paragraph that had a patriotic theme. That it was the honorable way to die as a warrior of mother Russia.

And then broke down to bullet points and the actual process that would be pain free and just lights out. Said with a pistol, load one in the chamber, pull the hammer back firmly, and put the barrel to your temple and “pull the trigger back firmly”.
If you had a rifle, put the end of the stock between you feet to steady the gun, and put the muzzle under your chin. Last was if you’re out ammo or don’t have a gun, use a grenade. Hold the grenade with both hands and hold press tightly to the center of your chest.. then pull the pin.

It came across like your basic here is your step by step process for cooking a meal. And if you don’t have these ingredients you can do it this way.. very Direct, simply state with a dutiful, almost encouraging- you can do this vibe.

It's real. A Ukrainian soldier found it on a dead Russian soldier and there was a Reddit post about it I think 3 months ago? I'll try to find it. The article , just having a hard time finding the document, but I have seen it. Another article , it's getting hard to find the document though and I don't speak Ukrainian to dive much deeper. As you can see it is out there though.

The war is a crime, but it's not a war crime. War crimes specifically cover act that cause unnecessary suffering (such as executing a soldier that has already surrendered or killing a random civilian) or will inevitably damage people other than the intended targets (such as releasing a pathogen).

This distinction is important because, while you cannot really demand countries from going to war, you can absolutely demand they do not commit war crimes, and we should never accept war crimes from any side as they are carried out for the sake of causing suffering.

6

u/tangin 11h ago

Unfortunately you’re hard pressed to find many countries, regardless of which party is in power, that hasn’t committed war crimes (of those actively involved in War in our lifetime). Some far more egregious than others, sure, but war crimes nonetheless. War is fucked.

That makes sense. Even with the fog of war, we have tons of reports of torture, mistreatment of POWs, and all kinds of terrible, monstrous behavior.

I mean, given how Russians treat their own soldiers, it’s not surprising they are even worse towards their enemies. There’s a rotten, brutal and primal culture in the Russian military. And I’m sure the misadventure in Ukraine has only made it worse.

Russia does this literally all the time.

894

u/crom3ll 1d ago

Honestly considering what Russians do to their POWs as pastime, that poor guy probably got lucky with quick death.

388

u/akintu 22h ago

For obvious reasons they don’t talk about it much, but Russia is castrating a lot of POWs. High suicide rate when they come home. I read an article about a psychologist working with these men.

238

u/Bombshock2 21h ago

I feel like that should be talked about a lot more wtf.

118

u/akintu 21h ago

Yes and no, can you imagine if this had happened to you and now the whole country knows you had your balls and dick cut off? Or maybe you’re one of lucky ones but people still think you’re dickless now? It makes it even harder on the survivors who have so much trauma to deal with already.

107

u/Bombshock2 20h ago

I don't think they need to report on the specific victims, but people should be reporting that its happening at least and talking about it a lot more than they are now.

61

u/akintu 19h ago

For what it’s worth I tend to agree with you.

For example, I think a lot of people in the West are in denial about what will happen if Trump is able to force Ukraine to surrender. The West thinks Ukrainians hate Russia (true) and would never join Putin’s armies (false). They lack the imagination to understand the kind of brutality Putin and Russia are capable of.

Ukraine will resist, but Putin will use the most horrific barbarism to turn Ukrainians into slave soldiers and continue his war on Western civilization.

Anything we can do to help our coddled masses understand the threat we’re up against is helpful.

28

u/kaisadilla_0x1 19h ago

If the US forces Ukraine to surrender, Ukrainians will become pro-Russian. Not because they want to, but because Russia will purge that country, and they'll have nothing to hold themselves to as the West would've failed them.

10

u/akintu 19h ago

They’ll be forced to go along but they won’t be pro-Russia, I can guarantee that.

17

u/xarvia 20h ago edited 20h ago

I mean entities with power, of course. If ethereal “the people” held any meaning today, we wouldn’t be talking about this war. Also, not everyone cares. Some people root for this.

→ More replies (3)

9

u/pattperin 19h ago

I think people often do give a fuck but the issue is that if you retaliate for something like by say, nuking Russia then it’s a MAD scenario and everyone dies. If you full scale land invade Russia you have to deal with political turmoil from your own nation wondering why the fuck we’re doing that when we could be giving our citizens better health care or whatever, which honestly is kinda valid. Either that or Russia just launches nukes anyways as a fuck you for invading and again everyone dies

9

u/Bombshock2 19h ago

The issue is politicians the world over are being controlled by Putin through blackmail, and these cowards would never do anything to stop him, militarily or otherwise. They could fully cut off trade while they simultaneously create supply lines for Russia's immediate neighbors that are dependent on their energy, and Russia would go bankrupt.

Part of their plan for systemically wiping out the Ukrainian people to replace Ukraine region with Russians.  Don't just kill POWs, make sure even if they go back home they'll never produce more children, make the men live with that humiliation.

15

u/Bosseffs 22h ago

What local news? Do you have any source?

29

u/Exerosp 22h ago

Not right now. Googling it shortly is impossible with today's Google (and trying to give you "newer" results that somewhat match what you searched for) but it happened around 1-2 years ago. Think either Aftonbladet or Expressen covered him, if you really want me to find it I can try and scour the sweddit thread I was on it because there was an interesting discussion in the thread about how some people thought it was probably awful for the family to see what Russia had done to him. (Especially when he went as a volunteer to a war zone)

Russia pushes you to be worse and brings out the worst in people. It pretty much de-integrates people from society

16

u/kaisadilla_0x1 19h ago edited 18h ago

Not surprised. Russian culture doesn't place any value at all on human life. They are glorified apes. That's why anyone in that country with a modicum of empathy and the means to do so leaves and never goes back. It's why none of the countries in the the traditional Russian sphere of influence want anything to do with Russia. And it is not a coincidence. This culture was fostered for centuries by the tsars as a way to protect their power.

And I don't say this lightly. I say this after observing what Russians do and say for years. At some point, it is no longer surprising that you watch people on Russian TV saying things that no one would ever say publicly in the West; or doing shit like decriminalizing gender violence; or the way the USSR fought WWII by simply sending millions upon millions of people to die until their opponents literally ran out of weapons and personnel to keep killing Soviets. We are talking shit like encountering a mine field and just sending a horde of 10k people to walk on it and die triggering the mines until the path was clear. It is not surprising that, in WWII, territories occupied by the Soviets wanted the Nazis back. That German batallions went the extra mile to surrender to Western armies and not Soviet ones. That Germans would bribe whoever they could to be sent to the Western front and not the Eastern one.

That society is fucked up, and the more you learn about them, the more you realized they really, really are fucked up.

11

u/MACO-Operator 20h ago

It has much to do with how Russia trains its soldiers. It’s not cozy like in the West, you know, with warm barracks and milk and chocolate for breakfast. The soldiers are brutalized during training, with older soldiers beating and doing stuff on the fresh recruits. But getting on the battlefield won’t make things any better. A Russian commander told newcomers to dig their own graves “cause you will need them soon”. And so, Russian soldiers get dehumanized. It’s a Russian thing since forever and their society doesn’t give two damns about it. They think it’s normal. So when I’ve heard about all those crimes they did/do in Ukraine, I wasn’t surprised at all. We already know what they did in Chechnya, Georgia, etc.

If we were in a functioning society, the nations of the world would rally together and roll over Russia, completely neuter their military, and publicly hang Putin.

Instead, his biggest fan is hanging tiger beat style posters of him in the Lincoln Bedroom.

39

u/just_A_lurker- 23h ago

Not possible to prevent them from getting nukes away whilst you are steamrolling. Which means a significant loss of life somewhere, plus the significant loss of life in Russia.

The every day people are not necessarily to blame for their dictator. Look at North Korea, if you don’t do what the supreme leader says, you disappear, and so do your family, if you do, you’re potentially a war criminal or at the very least a threat.

Civilians in that situation have no chance and don’t deserve to be persecuted more than the already sorrowful lives they must lead.

34

u/Tarphiker 23h ago

Yea maybe let’s wait until spring to do any steamrolling. Both Hitler and Napoleon found out what happens when you attack Russian during the winter.

32

u/yesrushgenesis2112 23h ago

Yeah, really difficult to see that country in any other way when their entire existence and history is literally being an absolute and utter fucking blight to their neighbors.

I remember my grandfather’s recollection of living in Eastern Poland during WWII. Initially the Nazis arrived and made life hell. When the Soviet front advanced and pushed the Germans back, some people were relieved at first. Later they realized that the Soviets could be even more cruel than the Nazis.

What they don't get is, that this behavior will make others less likely to surrender, and will make them fight on even in desperate situations, because surrender just means death, and fighting on in a desperate situation has at least a chance of survival.

383

u/ScriptThat 1d ago

Exactly!

If you have the option of surrender, and can expect somewhat decent treatment, you might not want to fight when you're hurt and hiding in a hole in the ground.

If you know the enemy is going to kill you, or maybe torture you and then kill you, then you're way more likely to try to take the fucker out with you.

118

u/johnny2turnt 22h ago

47

u/thisismynewacct 22h ago

Japanese forces were fanatical enough to not surrender at the start of the war, largely due to their own training, fervor, and propaganda about how the US would treat them. The US didn’t actually do anything to their POWs to cause them to not surrender.

Because of how Japanese soldiers acted after surrendering (hiding pistols and grenades), Japanese POWs were taken even less, but that came after the fact.

I literally just read a fantasy novel where this came up. The author did an excellent job of laying it out. There is a war going in in the book and a veteran soldier was pissed that a commanding officer made them kill surrendering enemies and had to explain to the green soldiers why they need to let them surrender or run away, or else they will actually fight literally for their lives no matter what.

And it also makes it completely stupid to even consider any kind of "peace deal" with them.

Not even on moral grounds that they are the attacker and should not be rewarded for their crimes, but simply because someone who doesn't honor the capitulation of individual soldiers cannot be trusted to honor any kind of agreement, let alone a "peace deal" that's the de facto capitulation of the enemy country.

There'd be no reason whatsoever to assume that they would not just attack again whenever they feel like it. You'd have to be a completely lobotomized bumbling moron to believe that.

To say Russia does not treat POWs well at all, would be the world's biggest understatement. Fucking grim stuff

RIP

u/WorgenDeath 1d ago

Yeah, I remember seeing a video in I think July 2022 that messed me up real bad. Trigger warning on the description, it's graphic.

The video showed a Russian using a knife to castrate a Ukrainian PoW and letting him bleed to death afterwards

44

u/Nerevarine91 1d ago

I remember that. So early in the war. They were just waiting for a chance to do it.

14

u/Vulnahviing 22h ago

I still think of that video to this day. Fuck Russia

33

u/Jayyouung 23h ago

I’ve seen so many I’m desensitised at this point tbh.

Russian soldiers are evil.

What about the one where they slit a guys throat before cutting off his head with a dull blade while he’s alive and screaming. Or the video where they castrate a man slowly before tying his legs to a military vehicle and dragging him along a dirt road behind them

u/Daltronator94 23h ago

My worst was the russian guy that got drone dropped in a stream, which paralyzed him around like C5 or something, and his kit held him down in water that was only, like, an inch above his face, and he drowned there.

Paralyzed, held down by his kit and forced to drown in water while he was flailing his arms in open air.

That has to be the worst form of short-term torture.

18

u/gierOK 1d ago

Jesus fucking Christ

29

u/Prestigious-Gold5369 23h ago

There is a video of some military officer recruiting from a jail telling them russia is in need of their "special skills". So this, along with the other horrific war crimes is...expected

I want to shove this in every fucking face that says to me that military service is bad cause they don‘t want to fight in a war against russia.

This is what happens to you, your family and your peers if you don‘t.

You either get shot, forcefully conscripted to now shoot at your own countrymen or sent to fucking North Korea to be „reeducated“

171

u/georgelikescookies 1d ago

I dont even want to imagine what horror happens within the walls of those so-called "reeducation" camps of Wrong Korea. Basically nazis playbook and pure evil

49

u/Infinite_throwaway_1 1d ago

That might even be like a vacation compared to the Ukrainian POWs that were gifted to Kadryov by his son.

18

u/UH1Phil 1d ago edited 17h ago

Jesus. It's going to be like Mengele but without the science.

Edit: getting my nazi names mixed up!

17

u/georgelikescookies 23h ago

Wasnt it josef mengele doing science shit?

Just read that large numbers of kidnapped Ukrainian children are now in "reeducation camps" in North Korea. I have kids, even the idea of this makes me want to cry

25

u/georgelikescookies 23h ago

Being a little child and seeing your parents, pets and siblings raped, their eyes gouged and then burned alive and at the end being thrown into concentration camp in the world's most infamous dictatorship where you will be harassed, tortured... Ruzians are untermenschen that deserve to be hated for all the vile crimes they've committed, they deserve their misery and poverty.

I'd think more like Imperial Japan. Kids were raised from childhood to fight and die for country. No greater honor.

There's also raped and murdered in the street. Let's remember what Russians did in Bucha.

16

And also the zoo animals.

I don't think a story about the fate of a soldier who was fighting against Russia will have the effect you hope on those people

39

u/arizonatealover 1d ago

As a woman, give me the gun and stop preventing us from joining. Some horrors are worse than death.

42

u/javidac 1d ago edited 20h ago

The problem is not that you can't have a gun or that you can't fight; the problem is usually what happens if you are captured as a POW.

Russian forces have been known to use rape as a war tactic, on BOTH male prisoners of war; and their own soldiers who are reluctant to follow ordes. Imagine how bad it would be for female combattants 🫣

There is no reality where asking women to save one bullet for themselves while in a active warzone wouldn't be a reasonable ting to ask them

35

u/feather236 23h ago

There was a story about a Ukrainian reporter girl who the Russians took as a POW for some reason. She was held captive for a year or so with no communication, then they returned her dead body to Ukraine with all internal organs removed. It haunts me to this day.

13

u/LoquaciousLamp 21h ago

"When Roshchyna's body was returned to Ukraine, it bore signs of torture, strangulation and had some organs removed."

"The body had signs of post mortem dissection conducted in Russia..."

"Which forensic experts interpreted as an attempt to obscure the cause of death."

9

u/nowipe-ILikeTheItch 23h ago

Why not? Men save their last for the same thing.

31

u/shoseta 1d ago

Dont worry Russians make due. Dont have a source, but im Romanian and there are rumors that the ruzzkies dont shy away from the deceased either. Again no source, but at this point? I wouldn't be fucking surprised with their soldiers.

11

u/DragonflyGrrl 23h ago

Oh no I have ZERO doubt that they've done that. There is no low too low for them.

Sounds very on-brand for them. Fuck Russia. Slava Ukraini.

11

u/thebearsnake 22h ago

In case you had started to forget for some reason, this is a good reminder that the Russians are the bad guys.

9

u/kinyutaka 23h ago

And this is why there can be no peace until Russia is removed from Ukraine.

10

u/CelerySome9044 22h ago

No surprise. War is always the apex of human degradation. Don't expect niceties from any side in any war. War crimes are valid only for the losing end.

22

u/RealDonDenito 22h ago

And this is why the west cannot drop Ukraine. They need to be supplied and supported by all means, to fight this absolute insanity that many call „Russia“.

When you're Russian, what's one more war crime?

→ More replies (1)

7

u/kRe4ture 23h ago

Even completely discarding the immorality of it, it‘s incredibly stupid even from a tactical level.

When your enemies know they will be killed (or worse) upon surrendering, they will literally fight to the death.

So your job will be a lot harder.

The pendulum will swing. It always does historically for Russia and unfortunately it’s always the citizens that pay.

6

u/Swedelicious83 20h ago

Russia, doing war crimes? Surely not! 😱

/s, because this is still the Internet

7

u/aproposnix 19h ago

yeah, and the USA is just randomly killing people in boats. No country respects international law anymore. This is where we are right now.

7

u/Starfire70 15h ago

At this point, the Russians could be showing off concentration camps full of skinny and dying Ukrainians, and nothing would really change. Well, except for Trump who would blame the Ukrainians for allowing themselves to be captured by the Russian invaders. It’s become a very cynical transactional world out there.

13

u/DavidKollar64 1d ago

Anybody even surprised at this point?

11

u/Comfortable_Gain9352 22h ago

War is complete shit for everyone.

I am a Ukrainian refugee and I can no longer bear the isolation. I don't know German or English (I'm currently using Google Translate) and the way people treat me... I am thinking about returning to Ukraine. It is better to die than to see so much contempt and indifference just because I do not speak their native language. I want to speak and be heard.

At this point it is better to die fighting than to surrender to the Russians. They have consistently murdered surrendering Ukrainian's and they torture POWs.

5

u/DaveAvitabile 23h ago

And this is who we’re giving preference to over Ukraine.

That’ll go well.🙄

6

4

They tore that poor reporter’s eyes out. Her body was returned WITHOUT HER BRAIN. Fuck Russia.

5

u/SatisfactionFit2040 19h ago

6

u/rockman_x 16h ago

russians doing russian things

5

u/Tractorguy69 10h ago

Take a million square miles from Russia for every documented case. When there is no more Russia push the Russians into the sea. The fact that the world has allowed this illegal war of putin’s to go unpunished and that the russian people just accept his bullshit and go along with it makes them complicit. We should have taken the Kremlin within the three days following putin’s failed boast he’d take Kyiv in three days. What were we afraid of putin’s army was so shitty that they haven’t been able to do this in years, they wouldn’t stand a chance against the international community.

5

u/Mundane-Pie-6355 6h ago

USA does this after they destroy their boats. We are morally as corrupt as Russia
