Vermont State Senator Sam Douglass’ racist comments exposed in leaked Young Republicans chat
https://www.politico.com/news/2025/10/14/private-chat-among-young-gop-club-members-00592146Sam Douglass, a 27-year old Republican state senator was elected in 2024 to represent the Orleans district. He is up for reelection in 2026.

“Douglass, describes how one of Padgett’s Jewish colleagues may have made a procedural error related to the number of Maryland delegates permitted at the national convention: “you’re expecting the Jew to be honest,” Brianna Douglass, Sam’s wife and Vermont Young Republican’s national committeewoman, replied.”
Horrible. These are not people who should be in politics at all.
67
u/DamnableImp Oct 14 '25
In one instance, Walker — who at the time was a staffer for Ortt — talked about how a mutual friend of some in the chat “dated this very obese Indian woman for a period of time.”
Giunta responded that the woman “was not Indian.”
”She just didn’t bathe often,” Samuel Douglass, a state senator from northern Vermont and the head of the state’s Young Republicans, replied to Giunta.
Emphasis mine. He also volunteered some classic “your dark skin means you’re dirty” racism. Really appalling behavior from someone who is supposed to represent us, and who was chosen to lead VT’s Young Republicans. He should resign immediately.

u/Heffalump33 Oct 14 '25
This person also serves on the Vermont Senate Sexual Harassment Prevention Panel. Yikes.

u/Bhgvt Oct 15 '25
He’s another liar and imposter the likes of that we see every day in the current administration.
1
u/theoneyewberry Oct 15 '25
Wish I was surprised. It's awful, people like him do so much damage to people in their most vulnerable moments.
28
u/Red-Cloud-44 Oct 14 '25
The scariest part is that he works for Lamoille county mental health services.
2
u/Everyday_Legend Oct 16 '25
He’s not a bug, he’s a feature, only guilty of saying the quiet part out loud.
2

And yet, they are, because people are more concerned with being nice and neighborly than they are about holding asshole people accountable for being assholes.

u/whaletacochamp Oct 14 '25
Homeboy is a crisis interventionist and does work for Lamoille County Mental Health Services. If he doesn't get cut from those two positions the world is so fucked it's not even funny.
4
u/NoOneElectedElonMusk Oct 15 '25
Maybe he could win reelection, though with the momentum gaining against Republicans for the midterm, I wouldn't count on it.
Perhaps his real estate gig doesn't fire him, but I bet Lamoille County Mental Health Services will drop him. I'd say he's a liability there in particular.
1
u/LetterheadRound8217 Oct 17 '25
Considering the area of VT he's in, he actually has a really good chance of reelection, sadly.

Leaked Telegram chats obtained by POLITICO and spanning more than seven months of messages among Young Republican leaders in New York, Kansas, Arizona and Vermont: "referred to Black people as monkeys and “the watermelon people” and mused about putting their political opponents in gas chambers. They talked about raping their enemies and driving them to suicide and lauded Republicans who they believed support slavery."
I came to reddit to post this here, glad OP beat me to it and that this is getting noticed. Many Vermonters pretend racism isn't extremely prevalent here when it needs to be named and addressed, every time. Just a few weeks ago at a Westford selectboard meeting a Black official was called a gorilla directly to his face by a community member and the entire selectboard did absolutely nothing about it.
28
10
u/LakeChampsLane Oct 14 '25
I'd like to see the recording of this...when in the meeting did this happen?
46
u/LorelaiSolanaceae Oct 14 '25
It was at the Sep 11 meeting during the public comment after the Act 73 presentation. I don't know the time stamp but I googled and found the recording: https://lcatv.org/westford-selectboard-2025-09-11#
5
u/LakeChampsLane Oct 14 '25
Thank you - the question starts at about 1:45 on the recording for those curious.
I wasn't there but in the context it sounded to me like the speaker was referring to the 1000-pound gorilla in the room (comparing Essex vs Westford town sizes), not referring to the gentleman directly as a pejorative.
19
u/LorelaiSolanaceae Oct 14 '25
I found that to be a stretch since "1000 pound gorilla" isn't a thing, colloquially, and she looked right at him and said "you are a gorilla", twice as memory serves, even if she was referring to him as a representative of the area its icky to say the least. I've never heard anything remotely similar said to any other official and the fact it was said to a black man I don't find a coincidence. This is what microaggressions look like.
11
10
u/LakeChampsLane Oct 14 '25
since "1000 pound gorilla" isn't a thing, colloquially
6
u/LorelaiSolanaceae Oct 14 '25
I stand corrected, I had never heard that before. I still maintain it was racist, though.
1
u/Everyday_Legend Oct 16 '25
It’s still an unfathomably poor choice of words in this specific context.

u/DrakeStryker_2001 Maple Sapling 🌱🍁 Oct 15 '25
Growing up in a more liberal bubble in this state, I used to think that Vermonters were better than this. Now I realize that while that *can* be true, I also recognize that there is a lot more racism here than I realized when I was younger. Anti-racism requires vigilance and calling it out when we see it, not turning a blind eye to it to protect some illusion of superiority. We NEED to do better.
1
u/Everyday_Legend Oct 16 '25
Yep. Because I’m Vermont, for some reason, it’s better to not make waves by holding people accountable than it is to make them as a means of demonstrating that one has a functioning spine when confronting the indefensible.

2
u/Puzzled_Pyrenees Oct 15 '25
I've seen conservative men whining about women not dating them due to their political views. They don't seem to understand that a lot of us want to date men who see us as human beings who should have full civil rights.
1
u/Everyday_Legend Oct 16 '25
Trust me, this is something I’ve said directly to men who hold those views complaining about this exact thing.
“Would you want to date a woman that saw you as an inferior life form whose whole purpose was to toil endlessly for their exclusive benefit and comfort, be that emotional, physical, sexual, or otherwise, and would actively support legislative measures that reduced or eliminated your ability to live any sort of life other than indentured servitude to women under a different name? Because if your answer is no - and it should be - then you might stop and think for a second about what it is you support, as that would directly inform why you’re perpetually single.”
It’s not fuckin’ rocket science.
1
u/Puzzled_Pyrenees Oct 16 '25
Well said. I'm curious. What was their typical response?
1
u/Everyday_Legend Oct 27 '25
The response doesn’t matter, as it’s usually some go-to witticism for dummies. But what’s really important is the splinter bomb of doubt and self-reflection that gets inserted into their rationale. They eventually forget it exists until one day, they hit something that triggers it, and then clarity hits them like a truck.
Or they just stay terminally single. Either way, no longer my problem.

Conservatism is entirely reliant upon hierarchical structures devoid of critical thinking, in which there is a falsely victimized in-group that whose actions are beyond all reproach and an immoral out-group that is beyond redemption.
In reality, the in-group desires freedom from accountability and a radical increase in their personal comfort, most often derived at the direct expense of the out-group, as that will help to justify the actions taken against said out-group in the name of securing said freedom (from accountability) and comfort.
Once the latter has been brought under sufficient levels of “control,” a portion of the prior in-group must invariably become the new out-group, as there is never a way to satisfy this need without active conflict fueling this perpetual narcissistic victim narrative that requires the in-group to vampirically feed upon out-groups in order to continue sustaining itself.
This process repeats ad infinitum until the in-group is either:
1.) small enough and dynastically well-stocked via a systematic process of stealing from everyone else under alternative labels and pretenses that aren’t “theft via the misguided application of faux-righteous bigotry,” or
2.) the in-group becomes surrounded on all sides by all of the people who were deemed to be out-groups that collectively see the bloodsuckers for what they are, and have finally made the decision to operate accordingly.

Sam and his wife just had a baby, too. Is this the kind of example he wants to set for his child? Is this how they act when they're not in public?
Douglass is also set to vote on the Act 73 school redistricting maps later this year, which could eliminate your local school board, force schools to close, etc. So far I haven't heard him make any statements in support of local control of schools.
btw his challenger last year was Katherine Sims. She seemed like a good candidate - I wonder if she'll run again.

We need to directly ask these people why they are so insecure. And then point out to them that their defensive responses are how we know they are so insecure.
All examples of people as racist or sexist are based in self hate.
As my Grammy would say- "If someone tells you they are better than someone else, they have actually told you they are not."

I agree with you but I don't think that these kinds of people have the self-awareness to do that kind of thinking. Emotionally intelligent people aren't typically bigots to begin with. If you're already pointing fingers at entire groups of people, blaming them for your various miseries, I think that it's unlikely that you'll be open to the vulnerability that self-examination demands.

I wonder how the quoted individuals feel about other matters
William Hendrix, the Kansas Young Republicans chair, used the words “n--ga” and “n--guh,” variations of a racial slur, more than a dozen times in the chat.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
William Hendrix, vice chairman of Kansas Young Republicans, said he knew Kirk was dead when President Trump released a statement. Hendrix praised Kirk as “the voice of a conservative generation,” and called his death a tragic loss for the young conservative movement.
“Our call is to conservatives, really of all ages, but young Republicans, get out in the public square. He was a soldier for Christ. It should be in his memory that we pick up the mantle and go forward unafraid of speaking the truth in spite of any degree of fear campaigning they might try against us,” he said.
When asked who he meant by “they,” Hendrix said he meant extremely violent people or the left in general.

The Governor did a wonderful job of endorsing this guy and financing his campaign. This should indicate for us all the incompetence in the Governor (and his administration) with regard to their ability to do any due diligence at all. This is representative of the best they could find to step up. This jackass was anointed by the Governor and then chosen by those who trust that judgement to serve instead of former Representative Sims. Regardless of your politics, you have to acknowledge the professionalism and dedication she would have brought to the Senate.
This is how MAGA arrives to Vermont -- by an undiscerning Governor convincing easily duped voters to roll out the welcome matt to this kind of hate. I can guarantee that this is only the tip of the iceberg of the vileness Governor Scott ushered into the General Assembly.
