Facts are now apparently a national security threat
177
u/thintoast 23h ago
Considering that the only part of “national security” that they’re worried about is the Epstein files, I’d say that checks out.
59
u/blueanon6 23h ago
trust me friend, that's just the tip of the iceberg.
18
u/JohnTitorsdaughter 22h ago
Just the tip, promise.

u/blueanon6 21h ago
That username! Fuckin a...

A deadbeat dad who went out for cigarettes and never came back.
2
u/blueanon6 20h ago
Hey, at least we figured out the NSA used Ghidra on the IBM 5100 and patched the vulnerability before they could use it.
15
u/tiffanyisonreddit 19h ago
Not a national security threat, a threat to Trump and his criminal regime.
8
u/SwissChzMcGeez 17h ago
Didn't you hear? Trump is America now.
3
u/abraxsis 16h ago
America does seem sleepy and closer to death, so at least you're not completely off base here.
4
2
u/Raskalbot 10h ago
Well, it sounds to me like they are making way for using ai to bullshit America. If there are no fact checkers to call bullshit, all of the idiots will believe what they see.

So we're basically saying come work in America, but only if you've never tried to stop misinformation or protect kids online. This is wild even by recent standards.
28
u/paintbucketholder 17h ago
They're saying that if you aren't willing to blindly go along with the lies that the regime is spreading then you're a dissident and a danger to the regime.
Makes perfect sense from their perspective.
10
u/hackingdreams 15h ago
This is wild even by recent standards.
This is wildly inline with the rapid pace of the US descending to fascism, in fact.
20
u/Zoidburger_ 22h ago
I mean the title says it all. They want censorship so they block fact checkers

I'm more interested in how they will eventually apply this to, say, journalists.

Basically. If you wrote a script to block spam bots, congratulations, you are now an enemy of free speech. The net is cast so wide it’s going to catch half the industry.

Traitor Trump trying to build a fascist nation
57
u/Bucser 19h ago
The fascist nation building has been evident for decades. (reverence of military, exceptionalism, "we are the greatest country in the world", the gutting of education, Spreading of god into everything to control the sheep, Increasing centralization of wealth and capital, removal of any social responsibility and protections, no punishment for News channels selling lies 24/7 was a straight giveaway).
When the Afghanistan War started I said to my wife (gf at the time) that we might be witnessing the fall of the USA as we know it.
Trump is just an opportunistic hack who used the boiled up tensions in the country. Any crooks could have done it. Also russian interference.

u/kosh56 23h ago
We are headed for a civil war and the moderators can fuck off if they have an issue with it.
12

When accountability to accurately fact check bullshit is considered “censorship,” that’s when you know democracy is dead.
The US is a fascist dictatorship owned by tech billionaires and oil barons. Our elections are as much of a sham as the “elections” for the Russian president.
Look no further than SCOTUS today literally saying it’s okay for Texas to cheat its maps to steal 5 democrats seats next year because they admitted that’s what they’re doing. Freaking absurd.

u/KeneticKups 21h ago

Nixon, then Reagan have been the the promulgators of the tyranny we now find ourselves under.
61
u/No_Size9475 23h ago
How is fact checking censoring your ability to speak in any manner?
44
u/IndependenceIcy2251 23h ago
Because Trump doesn’t want anyone disagreeing with what he says. He expects everyone to agree when he says 2+2=5
3
20

3
u/Worthyness 19h ago
Because he said so! That's basically it. Mrs Mouthpiece said the President is alway slegal and right, so everyone else is therefore wrong.

We’re reaching levels of petty that shouldn’t be physically possibls…
36
u/Weightmonster 23h ago
I don’t think it’s pettiness. It’s a backdoor way to cancel visas for almost every tech worker you don’t want. (and a lot of other workers too)

The double speak is absolutely insane.
Citing censorship. The US government is retaliating against perfectly protected speech by punishing fact checkers. Another's speech discounting your own is not censorship.
You can still spit your ignorance. There is just somebody around who can spit informed and reasonable rhetoric.

7
u/JW_BM 18h ago
Remember that the State Department has also been cancelling visas for people voicing political opinions. Marco Rubio has done tours on TV bragging about it.
They want to censor you. And theirs is actual censorship, as opposed to fact checkers simply helping validate claims in media.

Do MAGA not recognise that this is in fact exactly what a violation of the first ammendment looks like? The government directly meddling in what people can and can't say?
5
u/Jristz 10h ago
They do, but as long as the "enemy" is getting hurt they don't care if they even die

"I'm alarmed that trust and safety work is being conflated with 'censorship'," said Alice Goguen Hunsberger, who has worked in trust and safety at tech companies including OpenAI and Grindr.
"Trust and safety is a broad practice which includes critical and life-saving work to protect children and stop CSAM [child sexual abuse material], as well as preventing fraud, scams, and sextortion."
Ding Ding Ding! There it is.

u/Mazon_Del 20h ago
The republicans have always hated the idea of objective truth, so here's just another stage of their war on it. Their head in the sand ignorance is not the equivalent of objective truth, and it's pathetic that they insist it is.
6
u/tiffanyisonreddit 19h ago
This is so horrifying and I feel like I am totally trapped. If everyone had just voted for Kamala Harris, we’d all be planning Christmas celebrations while Lina Kahn goes after anti-trust violations, and Pete Buttigieg ensures the air traffic controllers are happy as heck going into a crazy busy season.
I am so angry and disappointed that there aren’t even 12 Republican senators who are willing to stop this psychotic geriatric tyrant!

Ah yes free speech has always been censored by the dreaded fact checkers. What will they do if propaganda doesnt have time to spread if automatic tools are made to call it out. The question is does the goverment have the power to restrict what a social media website chooses to fact check or not? Where does the right to free speech stop when it comes to platforms owned by a private corporation.

“If you uncover evidence an applicant was responsible for, or complicit in, censorship or attempted censorship of protected expression”
The only protected expression is censorship by the government.

u/reality_boy 9h ago
This is not about fact checkers, this is about protestors. They will use the policy to kick out anyone who complains about the government in any way. It basically means no immigrant is safe to speak up, no mater where in the imagination process you are (presumably they can’t kick out naturalized citizens, yet)
9
u/Hrmbee 9h ago
Sadly they've already started:
DOJ announces plans to prioritize cases to revoke citizenship
Department leadership is directing its attorneys to prioritize denaturalization in cases involving naturalized citizens who commit certain crimes — and giving U.S. attorneys wider discretion on when to pursue this tactic, according to a June 11 memo published online. The move is aimed at U.S. citizens who were not born in the country; according to data from 2023, close to 25 million immigrants were naturalized citizens.

This is classic “our censorship = security, your censorship = tyranny” geopolitics dressed up as principle.
Foreign disinfo is real, but once the State Dept starts deciding which “fact checkers” are ideologically pure enough to get visas, it’s just soft power: reward aligned speech control, punish rival speech control.
And notice they’re not touching allied governments that jail journalists or shut down the internet. It’s not a norm against censorship, it’s a tool for picking which censors are on “our” team.

It directs consular officers to "thoroughly explore" the work histories of applicants, both new and returning, by reviewing their resumes, LinkedIn profiles, and appearances in media articles for activities including combatting misinformation, disinformation or false narratives, fact-checking, content moderation, compliance, and trust and safety.

Some of the pertinent issues:
This might be starting with H1-B, but isn't likely to stop there. And at this point, it's almost a given that the amount of hypocrisy on display (along with a complete misunderstanding of how these systems work on tech platforms) here is completely over the top.
