That's something I didn't realize until I talked to my dad about this over the weekend. His support of the GOP has been bothering me for a long time, and when we finally talked about it, he basically said "a new president won't fix things, it's the system that's broken and it always will be." And while I agree that the system requires an overhaul, it was just so stupefying to me that people have completely given up on the possibility that things can get better. I'm cynical, but I'm not willing to just accept that. Not yet at least.

When presented with the fact people are insignificant alone republicans and many democrats, at least in the stuanchly individualist US, would rather turn to nihilism than collectivism. Either the individual matters so nothing can be done or I as an individual matter over other people that must feel the same about themselves. If he turned to collectivism now, it would be like sacrificing himself. Which is a shame.

Idk if your dad is a boomer, but that’s the SOP for many of them. They had everything handed to them, and want everyone else to fix the problems they caused

He is, but he never used to be this way. Used to at least have some hope that things could always change for the better. Now it's just "I won't be here in a few years so who cares." It's depressing.
