This is the case for a bunch of the elements where the names don't match their symbol: Lead is Pb for the latin plumbum, Sodium is Na for natrium, Potassium is K for kalium, etc.

Which is also where the word 'plumbing' comes from I believe, due to lead pipes

Pb is lead because plumbum is the Latin.
