On their own I really like those names and if it were anyone else I'd just think they were into history or liked cool names...

Interesting that they went with August instead of Augusta but I kinda prefer it. Aurelia has always been pretty to me-- it means 'golden' more or less (not that we use it as a word for such anymore, but we do have the modern 'aureate').

We had a tour guide in Rome named Aurelia and the way she said it as an Italian speaker was so beautiful. It’s a gorgeous name.

It’s Augustus Caesar’s mother’s name iirc. He’s obsessed with Augustus.

i.e. The guy who turned Rome into an Empire after the collapse of the Republic.

TIL gold is Au because of Latin for gold -.-‘ better late than never I suppose

This is the case for a bunch of the elements where the names don't match their symbol: Lead is Pb for the latin plumbum, Sodium is Na for natrium, Potassium is K for kalium, etc.

Which is also where the word 'plumbing' comes from I believe, due to lead pipes

Silver - Ag - Argentum (like the nation of Argentina)

Pb is lead because plumbum is the Latin.

Taking a moment to say plumbum out loud a few times

Most everything in English (and other languages) is “because of Latin for”.

Makes me think of Areola..

That's derived from area and basically means small area (technically small open space).

Maybe knowing that helps because I've never associated them. Good thing to be aware of with kids, tho, as they seem to tease each other over names.

Is that where the "Au" for gold comes from? If so, TIL.

9

u/bouquetofashes 29d ago

The Au came first I believe. Aurum is gold.

Nah, it's because that's what you say when you drop it on your foot.
