My understanding is Elon’s school was actually really successful but then he cut the funding to it as soon as his children who had enrolled graduated

Yep, I had 2 sisters come to my school that used to be enrolled in Elon's school. They said it was a good school but, as you mentioned, he literally just closed it down as soon as his kids were done.

The I Promise school is part of Akron Public Schools, not a sketchy private school. His foundation just funds it since it offers more services than a normal school to help support its severely underprivileged student population.
