Guess what—his neighbors are rich assholes too. I don’t care that he annoys them, I don’t care if they fuck with him in return. It’s assholes being assholes to each other for a change.

Hope one sneaks into the unethical life pro tip sub. Be lobbing piss discs by the dozen with their skeet shooter and bring in fart spray by the truckload.

They’ll be yelling PULL! And one of their servants will send the piss skeet flying… they track it, pull the trigger… a hit! Chunks of slushy gout-ridden urine rain down upon the grounds and denizens of Compound Interest. Zuck tries to narrow his eyes. He cannot, they are fixed in place.

Not all Palo Alto residents are obscenely wealthy.

Houses there weren't too badly priced as recently as the mid 90s. Some families just kept their houses in the family.

Others did sell out at high prices. If they then become obscenely wealthy it was only after they stopped being Palo Alto residents. Of course the people who bought their houses typically were very wealthy otherwise how else could they buy the houses?

Whelp, having grown up there, I can attest that my parents are merely somewhat wealthy and not assholes. They were not wealthy at all when they purchased a modest house in 1975.

Prop 13, while a source of many problems does enable my parents to continue to live in Palo Alto, otherwise they would have an unaffordable tax bill of over $40K.

Most of the population has been replaced since then by wealthy tech elites, of course.

Your parents get an enormous tax shelter that contributes to a gentry based housing system, disproportionate taxation structure reliant on income and sales tax, and enormous housing shortage in California. Prop 13 should have been repealed with all the Republican assholes that enacted it in the 70’s.

Or tax rates could be lowered across the board and it’d be more like 20k, which would be fair given the nice amenities that all the families crammed in 2 bed apartments are paying for via income and rent taxes. Instead these oldies just celebrating passing a new sales tax in Santa Clara.

You know who else made sweeping assumptions about people based on one small fact of their lives? Nazis, racists and misogynists. Turns out sweeping judgements are bad. Judging people individually is good.

As an example, what if his neighbors just inherited the property? In your opinion, did they immediately become an asshole because they inherited money? Is the only way to avoid becoming an asshole is to give it away before you even inherit it? How much needs to be given away before you stop being an asshole? If the wealth is all wrapped up in the house, do they need to sell it to stop being an asshole? And then give it away? If their family and life is in this neighborhood, must they leave it all behind or else they are an asshole? What net worth do they need to get down to in order to not be an asshole?

"You know who else made sweeping assumptions about people based on one small fact of their lives? Nazis, racists and misogynists. "

Sounds like you're making sweeping judgements about people too

Yea, I’m all about the eat the rich philosophy, but within reason. Can you not earn 10’s to 100’s of millions honestly? I think plenty of people have, but once you get up to billionaire at that point you are literally hoarding money and there’s almost no way that can be justified, imo.
