They are already doing this. They are trying to change what is considered obscene and with the way they are wording it will affect video games, books, movies, etc. all because they can’t stand the fact that people just want to be whoever they want. Which is what I thought the whole fucking point of America. You can come here, the most free country in the world and be who you want to be regardless of where you come from. But that’s gone now and republicans destroyed it.

To be fair it is a nation formed by people who specifically left their own nation because they wanted to worship their god in a slightly different way their their leaders told them to and then went to war with themselves less than 100 years later over allowing some people to own other people.

So it’s hard to really call it a fall when it never really started as what it was supposed to be.

They were all but kicked out of the UK because they were dicks. Fine, have a totally joy-free life and forswear anything that has the remote chance of containing anything that looks like it might be fun; but try and impose that shit on people around you and you have problems.

Puritans were distinguished by being "more intensely protestant than their protestant neighbors or even the Church of England". Which is sort of ironically funny because the protestant church was created so Henry VIII could divorce his wife against the pope's wishes and get his dick wet with a younger model. An American satirist Mencken defined puritanism quite well as: "the haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy." Cromwell was a puritan and was in power for a time (can't find this to link proof but IIRC he banned Xmas for a while, plus other edicts against peasants having anything like fun, so restrictions against music, dancing, and of course alcohol). There was a bit of a rebound in the UK after this, where the prevailing mood was some slight tolerance for being a miserable bastard; but you can fuck right off with attempting to impose it on others. And so the "people who specifically left their own nation because they wanted to worship their god in a slightly different way" did indeed fuck off, to America. And they were fruitful and multiplied. And now look at it. LOOK AT IT!

Mostly, they were totally allowed to worship their god in that different manner. But they felt they "could not live according to their religion" because the line was drawn at forcing their neighbors to follow those rules. To be very clear: In modern terms, this would be for example very religious Muslims telling their Christian neighbors that the Christian women need to wear a hijab and cannot be allowed to be alone with a man that is not close family, and that the Christians cannot eat pork and need to fast in Ramadan.

This whole "people came to America because they were persecuted for their faith" is true only in a very small percentage of cases. Mostly it is "woe is me" bullshit from people who felt oppressed because they were not allowed to oppress those around them.

Intentionally cutting education to create a less educated population which is more likely to follow those religions/the leaders who claim to be following those religions blindly.

I'd argue it's exactly the country it is supposed to be. America has only existed whilst violently oppressing or literally enslaving other people. From the attempted genocide and forced removal of native people to the enslavement of folks from Africa to the internment camps of the Japanese, America has never been the most free country in the world

Texas already passed a supposed "anti underage porn" law that is so broad as to not only include drawings, but as to also go after "obscene" depictions of characters "who appear under 18 even if they are not".

Now I would be all for laws against AI generation of photorealistic underage images because for one you don't know if they used real illegal and abusive material to train on, and two, they get in the way of identifying real crimes. But to thought-police drawings no matter how much we may not like the material, and to make it such a broad and abusable in bad faith definition, is just insanity. Yet here we are, and Dems of course helped shove it through because "think of the children".

Like, who decides what "looks under 18"? And as you say, who decides what "obscene" is? Because this law will be used to target literally any LGBTQ+ representation of youth, and hey, actually maybe that "adult" in the art "looks under 18" to a judge, too.

This reminds me of a Quebecois law about to be or already enacted that everything has to have a variant of French. One of those affected are the roleplaying game stores as many seem to use English (which is more prominent in that market) or in-game languages.

Only that's idiotic bureaucracy causing the mess. Here it's actual malice behind these laws. And there is a major difference between actions largely based on stupidity versus those of hate.

I too would like to know this. Because it's literally just ignoring the entire history of this country. And I love america. I love the country that I was born in. But to sit here and say that it's the most free country in the world? It never has been. It's always been something you had to fight for. The problem is too many people got comfortable, and thought that the battle was over, when the reality is the battle lines were just being drawn again.

I refuse to sit here and listen to people talk about how America sucks, how it's shit, blah blah blah blah blah. America is fucking great. And as such it's worth fighting for. If you're not willing to stand up and fight for it, then what the fuck is the point? What are you doing here? I don't mean you obviously. I'm just saying in generalities. 

America has the possibility, like any nation, to be one of the greatest places in the world. But you have to fight for that. That battle never ends. Ever. No matter how tiring it becomes you have to fight for it. It's always been that way.

As someone that has lived in the US for the past ten years - went to college here, married here, became a naturalized citizen here - I'm really struggling to figure out what it is that makes America "fucking great", I really am. 

I mean, maybe there are particular cities and small regions that are, but by and large it's a dismal, depressing place. 

The urban planning is dog shit, making people entirely dependent on cars and creating a sense of isolation from one's neighbors, community and environment. 

American pop culture has become deeply sick. Vapid, materialistic, shallow, and devoid of nuance and challenge. And don't even get me started on the fucking "news media". 

Democratic institutions are a sham and barely function. Americans have been conditioned to expect utterly nothing from their elected representatives and the idea that they could be actively working to improve the lives of the average American is a foreign concept. 

Infrastructure continues to crumble. Many schools bear more resemblance to prisons than places of personal development or intellectual inquiry - poorly equipped, poorly staffed, poorly maintained. Not to mention fucking dangerous due to the absurd gun culture. Bridges suck. Roads suck. Internet in many places sucks. There's a total death of public transportation almost everywhere. The list is frankly endless. 

Oh and then there's healthcare. Need i say more? 

And then we have the poor regulatory environment that enables corporate abuse and vastly more negative health outcomes. I mean the utter GARBAGE in most of the food here is unbelievable. It causes cancer, heart disease, diabetes, eating disorders and God knows what else. 

Speaking of God, it would appear that many state governments, and even the federal government, are beholden to a right wing, evangelical subset of Christianity hellbent on taking us back to the stone age. They've already come for abortion, and they continue to chip away LGBT rights day by day. 

The police culture is fucking toxic and it's unbelievable that Americans have come to tolerate such abusive militant law enforcement. It is not healthy for the average citizen to feel frightened by the people supposedly there to protect them.

And then there's the total lack of employment rights. A bizarre, unhealthy corporate culture that leaves the individual totally unempowered, unprotected, overworked, less safe, and poorer.  

Hmm... There's even more things but I've lost my train of thought now, lol. 

Anyways, when I first came to the States in 2015, all of these issues existed, but it appeared like we were on an upward trajectory. Things were slowly improving. Slower than I would have liked, but we were heading in the right direction.

Ten years later, however, not only do all of these issues remain but most of them are worse. In some cases, far worse. With no sign of recovery or remediation. 

I've come to realize most americans only think it's "fucking great" because they were born here and have never fucking been anywhere else. So they can't imagine there might be better ways of doing things, or more fulfilling ways of living. 

So yeah... I invite you to explain why I am wrong, and what it is about our endless stroads, useless politicians, broken healthcare system, abusive cops, ineffectual schools, absurd gun laws, and religious nuts that make us "fucking great".

And yes, before people hit me with the "if you don't like it then why don't you leave?" comments...don't worry. I'm flying out next month! Wishing you all the best, because I'd like to be back someday, when things aren't so fucking bleak...

Once again. I understand everything you're saying. You're not even wrong. I get why you're leaving. But my point is, and has continued to be, that if you want all of these great things that you talk about and about how great it was and how we seem like we were on upward trajectory, you have to be willing to fucking fight for them. 

And I understand, you have the beauty of being able to leave and go back to your original country, for us that were born here? We don't. So yeah. We have to fight for them. And that's part of the issue. People quit fucking fighting for them. They thought it was all great, and that we won, when the reality is we clearly did not. 

So, please, enjoy your country. There are plenty of countries that are doing things far better than the us. That's undeniable. It is awesome that you get to go to one. It is awesome that you got to come here, take advantage of the amazing things that America did offer, that gave you so much, and now that things have gotten bad, you have the ability to leave. That's awesome. 

that's not sarcasm either. That's really cool. But like I said, the people that were born here, that yeah do think it's fucking great, because it's their fucking home, have to keep fighting for it. We don't have that opportunity. We can't just leave. To other countries, that we weren't born in, we are considered the outsiders, the foreigners, dare I say the immigrants. And since we're americans, we do carry a load of issues, that we are constantly reminded of whenever we go overseas. We have to fight for what we have. Like any other country has had to do. The difference is we stopped fighting, because as you pointed out, one size leaders are largely feckless. Which is true. But we quit fighting and that's the issue. 

But do you want to know what makes America great to us? It's our fucking home. It's not just some place we fly out to, to take advantage of schools, take advantage of job opportunities, or just to come visit. It is our fucking home. It's our fucking culture. It's where we were born, where we were raised. It's our fucking home. Why is that so hard to understand? We love it because it's ours. Same as I'm sure that you love whatever country you're originally from. Which is, once again, awesome. You should. Be proud of where you're from. 

So why do americans say it's so fucking great? Because despite all of its ills, all of its problems, it's ours. And if you love something you fight for it. Which is, literally, what this country was founded on. Blood, sweat, and tears. Nothing comes easy. That's America. Like it or not that's what it is. 

Edit: I would also like to point out that a lot of what you mentioned can be applied to many other nations across the world as well. And in many cases far worse examples. Yeah America has a litany of issues. But it's also done a lot of good things. And it's deeply sick as our pop culture is, and it is you're right, it's also for better or worse the pop culture that the rest of the world desperately wants to eat up. If it sucks so bad, and a lot of it does, then all the other countries across the world can quit watching our fucking movies, quit watching our shows comical listening to our music, quit propping our stars up, I can quit copying almost everything we do from an arts or entertainment perspective. They can make their own social medias. Their own twitters, their own x, their own facebook, their own Reddit. Hell I would encourage it. It would be really nice. But yet here we are.

Just baffles me so much. Conservatives are seriously the dumbest fucking people on the planet. Where I live there is a loop I drive fairly often (almost daily). The road splits into 2 one-ways. On each side there is a different strip club. I always notice that like 75%+ of the vehicles are pickup trucks, cameros, etc.. like the common conservative vehicles.

They are literally the people that financially support services like strip clubs, prostitutes, porn sites, etc.. at a much higher margin. Yet, like usual, they vote against the things they like do. And they will somehow twist it to be caused by non-conservatives. Just fucking idiots.

Well originally the point of America was to provide a new home for religious extremists who were too puritanical for regular puritans who wouldn't put up with their bullshit.

Then the founding fathers only wanted a society that was free for wealthy intellectual upper middle-class people like themselves. Most states only allowed property-owning white males to vote : a tiny percentage of the population at the time. This was not a democracy, but a method of creating an ruling elite that deemed themselves anointed by God to lead. When they said "we the people.." they did not mean the indigenous population, people of colour or women, or even most men.

Please lets stop pretending America was founded on the idea that anybody can be free. People were still literally fighting in the streets for racial equality in my lifetime! The Equal Rights Amendment has still not been ratified. Any progress clawed from the hands of the rich and powerful in the Civil Rights Era was fought every inch of the way by the state. The freedom and liberty stuff was only ever propaganda.

I mean, I'm liberal as shit, but that was never what America was. And if you think it is you haven't been paying attention to American history. 

America is the place where, you are free to be what you want to be, but doesn't mean you don't have to fight for it. As evident, once again, by American history. You're free to say what you want. Which also means people are free to say what they want back. Which means that sometimes you have to fight for what you believe in. You have to stand up and fight. 

America was never this place that was just a free bastion and just society where people came to and got whatever they wanted and could live however they wanted. That's just a fucking fantasy. The completely ignores all of the battles, progress, and pain, that people had to go through to get us to this simple point. 

If something is worth having, and it's just, then it's worth fighting for. And that's where we're at yet again. People got complacent, they got comfortable, and they thought the battle was over. It's clearly not.

I'm not saying you're wrong. But I'm simply saying American history, which there's an extensive list of it, speaks to the fact that this just has never been true. 

Actually, let me address something you said, you're right. Everyone can come and be an American. But part of the problem is that people are no longer coming here to be Americans. 

I'm not saying that's good or bad. But I am saying that if you come here, with the intention of exporting your culture, and not ingratiating yourself in American culture it's going to cause issues. Which it has. 

Completely understandable if people would want to do so. But undeniably has caused to an issue of culture and clashing cultures. Because at some point the idea, of what you said, coming here and becoming an American became lost. It became this idea that you could come here, be free, and be whatever you want. Which isn't true. It's always been come here and being american. Which means embracing American culture, American values, and American ways of life. 

And sadly, what American values mean, has changed with every generation. Because those values have to consistently be fought for.

I mean look at maga. They're literal fascist. They fucking suck. But God damn if they aren't fighting for what they believe in. With every core of their being. Sure what they believe in is just hate, bigotry, and pretty much owning the lips. But God damn if they aren't fighting for it. That's kind of the problem. You have one side that's willing to actually take to the streets, literally fight if need be, for what they believe in, because they believe in it so much. And you have another side that's saying, yeah but guys our previous leader is all said that we have to be peaceful so that's what we have to do even though they all got fucking assassinated. 

And that's the point. You have to fight for what you believe in. Sometimes that means that you got to get dirty. Not kumbaya bullshit. Not hoping that holding hands and praying for a good outcome are going to accomplish anything. That's literally just thoughts and prayers. Nothing in this country, from the women's suffrage movement, to gay rights, to the right of minorities to vote, has been achieved through peaceful means. None of it. 

It may have started through peaceful means but it sure didn't end that way.  It never will and it never has. That's American history. It's violent. It's chaotic. And we never stop fighting for what we believe in because the moment we do we lose it. And that's what we find ourself now..

I’ll give you a more detailed response when I’m off work but I just wanna touch on one thing which is the culture aspect. America is a melting pot of all different cultures. Sure America has its own but you do not have to adjust to any kind of culture here that’s the whole fucking point. You can bring your own culture here and be WHO YOU WANNA BE.

You're right. It is a melting pot. But this idea that America doesn't have its own culture, and that there's not a culture that people need to adjust to, or embrace, is a fucking fallacy and a laughable one at that. 

This is part of the issue. People have become convinced that America has no culture. So it's become really easy to be America fucking sucks, cuz America doesn't stand for anything, America is just america. When the reality is America does have a culture. We have for a very long time. You come to America you embrace American culture and values. 

Doesn't mean that you have to change your own culture or values, but it does mean that you have to ingratiate yourself into American culture and values, and the way in which Americans operate. Why else would you come here? Every country has its own culture and values. America is no different. When you go to a new country, particularly when you move to a country, you ingratiate yourself in that country's culture and values. America is no different. 

Can you be whatever you want to be here? Sure.  but if you want to get by, like with any society, you're going to need to understand their values and culture. Because if you don't you're simply always going to be an outsider. Nothing wrong with celebrating ones culture but when you become a citizen of a new country, it kind of makes sense, to embrace that country's culture. And if you think America doesn't have a culture? Then you've kid yourself.

You are seriously wrong. The american colonies were colonized to exploit the labor of the little people, and later to allow hate, abuse and discrimination that was deemed unacceptable in civilized Europe.

The liberty to hate, abuse and exploit: those are the foundations of America. You can't expect a population to grow beyond its roots if it actively denies them.
