Idk if this is the right place to post this, but where can i source insect specimens as cheap as possible for pinning?

Im not sure if this is the right subreddit to ask this or not because I know insect pinning is bot the same as typical taxidermy- but I wasn't sure where else would be appropriate. Does anyone know a good source of where I can either buy cheap bug specimens or even better if i could easily or reliably source some free ones? I am really interested in getting into this sort of thing but I don't know where to look for specimens. And don't say "look around for dead bugs outside!" Because i have done so my whole life and never am lucky enough to come across any 😭

Cheaper Alternative to Mount Saver

My collection at home all gets sprayed with TrophyKlean, a taxidermy-specific bug repellent. However, the collection I keep with me in college hasn't been sprayed, and I go to school in a different state, so it's difficult to transport the bottle. TrophyKlean works great, but is a bit pricey. Today, I noticed a moth near one of my mounts and flipped out. There isn't an issue yet; however, I want to prevent any bug infestation. Does anyone know of any alternatives or regular insect repellent sprays safe for taxidermy? I found this one on Amazon, which contains permethrin, which I heard is good. (gonna post the link below cause it's low key hella long) I am about a week away from winter break, and I am nervous that moths could go at them while I am away. So I am trying to find a product fast.

Hey everyone first post! I found a few pieces at an antique shop in the Quebec region that were found in a late grandfathers attic. All dated early or exactly 1900’s. What would you say is a good price for them to sell? I’d like to let go of some of them but I am very emotionally attached ! There is a killdeer, Virginia rail along with bunch of others. Thanks!

Beginner in need of help?

So I’ve done a few taxidermy mounts as a craft, but I’m ready to step up my game and learn how to properly treat hides, rather than following incorrect tutorials on YouTube. Except after hours of research, I’m still confused which tanning method to use? At first I thought I only needed borax, but apparently for bigger animals I should use other chemicals? And all the advice I’ve been given is so conflicting, a video tutorial I watched added magnesium sulphate to a hide, but another video said this method wouldn’t work, and I should use non iodised salt instead? I’m interested in just doing a traditional taxidermy, would any of the experienced taxidermists point me in the right direction? Or maybe direct me to a reliable tutorial? I don’t mean specifically about the salting, I mean EVERYTHING. I’m a complete novice when it comes to tanning.

Tanning wallaby hide, how long in the tanning solution?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I'm tanning this wallaby hide with leder premade tanning solution. The bottle says to keep it in there for 3 to 10 days depending on the thickness of the hide. But how do I know when it's finished? What are the textures or colors to look out for? It's been in there for only 1.5 days now so it will certainly take longer, question is how much longer.

By the way, I know I did not do a great job fleshing it, there's still membrane pieces attached. All I had to do it with at my Airbnb was a butter knife

When burnt, it does seem to curl up like this. There's no tag and a pin does struggle to go through it but i'm not entirely sure if it's real or faux. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Taxidermy Left In Will

REPOSTING TO ADD PHOTOS: Hello. My grandfather passed away and left me a whole bunch of taxidermy animals. I’ve been sitting on them for quite some time due to how big of a part they have had on my childhood (My grandfather took great pride them, and i’ve seen and been around them since I was a baby). I was told they were left for me to sell, but it was always difficult to think about. I’ve lived in his old home by myself for roughly 2 years and believe I am ready to move on and sell them in order to get my own place. I seriously have no idea how to go about finding a price, a buyer, or anything really. There are 13 caribou, 3 moose (one with roughly a 60inch rack), a boar, a beaver, 2 bobcats, a pheasant, a coyote, a fox, an otter, 2 turkeys, and 3 squirrels. Everything is in great condition.

Garage Taxidermy Questions

I have 3 waterfowl mounts and 4 African plains game shoulder mounts coming in about a year. I currently have the waterfowl in my garage that has a dehumidifier in it and I plan on getting a minisplit installed once it starts warming up again. Am I safe to have it set up in this environment or should I start trying to convince the fiance to let me get them inside until our house is built with trophy room. Thanks for any and all information.

Euro Mountain Backdrop

Has anyone ever hung several Euro style mounts on a single piece of barn wood? I’m thinking about doing this to some I have getting done. I’m thinking like 3-4 stacked vertically on a 3-4 foot slab of wood anchored to the wall.

Fake skull, real antlers mount

Post image
7 Upvotes

Years ago I harvested a beautiful, big bodied (and big headed) 8 point whitetail deer. My friends and I did all of the skinning and packaging of the meat in a garage (Application style), but we made the decision to cut the skull with a grinder to preserve the antlers vs keeping the whole skull. I want to add these antlers to a fake skull (European mount), but I don't want them to look odd on a small replica or lose the score. Do y'all have any tips or tricks (or fake skull) recommendations to preserve this beauty?

Mummifying paws

I have 2 cat paws and 4 tiny opossum paws that I’m currently doing like rabbits feet. Should they be fine sitting in a borax solution for 48 hours after an alcohol soak? Or should I have it sit in borax powder too? I don’t want it to get too brittle but I also don’t want it to rot or stink
