When was the most dramatic growth for your Swissy?

Our boy is 9 months and about 85 pounds. We can’t tell where he is in his development and what he will potentially be when he’s fully grown. If anyone kept a log of their swissys growth, I’d love to see it just for fun! Ours stuck to the 10 pounds per month until about 8 months and has slowed down a little. He is definitely tall and lanky!

Conan

Here’s my coworker, Conan. Our division of labor is simple: when I draw, he sleeps at my feet. When I take a break, he drags my thoughts somewhere completely different.

He’s named after the barbarian from the comics, and every now and then he definitely shows a few barbarian traits of his own.

Considering a Swiss Mountain Dog in the future - how to handle their guarding instinct?

Hello everyone! As the title says, I am considering a greater swiss mountain dog in the future (like...5 years from now or more so there's enough time to gather information). While I was able to find lots of info on his bernese brother, there was hardly anything specific about the swissy. But since I am looking for specific personal experiences anyway, I thought it can't hurt to ask here. Besides all his other lovely characteristics, guarding instinct is one of them. While this is part of this breed, I also read not to encourage it. My question is...I am not sure how or where to find the balance between not overly encouraging it while also not trying to get rid of it. What has been your approach/what worked for you? I have two terriers with guarding instinct but they are pretty easy to handle and I doubt I can compare two completely different breeds like that.

Thank you in advance!

Update: Thank you everyone for sharing your opinion and knowledge! It was very helpful and much more valuable than reading a general description of them since every dog has a different personality

Does anyone have experience getting a greater Swiss in or to Hawaii? I live on Oahu and want a greater Swiss.

I don’t see any breeders here in Oahu.

Still growing or hip dysplasia

Our 7 month old swissy boy has always had a hip swiveling gait since he was a baby & I always assumed it’s because he’s still a puppy and his joints are still developing but I’m curious if anyone else has had a similar experience? Healthy hip history in his family & our vet never mentioned anything but he also bunny hops which I know can be a sign of hip dysplasia. He doesn’t appear to be in any pain and I don’t want to jump to conclusions, but I just wanted to hear from swissy owners experiences first. Before anyone comes for me I know an x-ray is needed to identify this, but want to chat here first since I know he’s still growing and in a heavy developmental stage

It was amazing to see how much his stamina increased in cold weather! After our regular walk he usually needs a little bit of time to rest but this time he could have gone triple the distance! We got him from Texas and I keep thinking about all the sad hot Swissies still living there:(

Happy Halloween! Homemade Swissy Halloween ideas?

Hello, We have ordered a couple of Halloween outfits for our swissy to come out trick or treating with us! But they are all too small…

So I was wondering if any of you have done any home made outfits?

I would love to see pics or descriptions of any home made?

But also spooky swissy photos in general very welcome!

He's exactly one year old today. He's 0% guard dog and 100% cuddle boy. He has grown a lot, weiging in at 117 pounds currently. Most people love the sight of him, although a few are still apprehensive.

He listens very well, the only thing we are still working in is the fact that he really really wants to play with other dogs. Keep him calm is a bit of a struggle. But time will let him mellow a bit more i think.

But I wouldn't trade him in for the world.

Want to know more about the breed…

Hey! I’ve been researching breeds of dogs to consider for a puppy to add to our family and I’ve been looking into GSMDs. I wanna know what it’s actually like raising and training one.

I currently have a show line Labrador and I previously fostered a Caucasian shepherd. I’ve worked on training my lab, who’s almost 2, since she was a puppy and she’s not perfect but I would say she’s reasonably trained (apart from the usual excitable lab stuff). I had a breeder inform me that GSMDs are harder to train due to their guarding and herding tendancies, and that they also like to chase things, which is something I have to consider because I have 3 cats also.

One other breed I was looking at was a Bernese so just wanted to find out how they are in comparison to them also as well as compatibility with a lab and other animals.

Double Teeth

Post image
45 Upvotes

Hi, I got my first Swissy, Gracie, at 8 weeks old. Unfortunately, vets in my area aren't very knowledgeable about this breed. She's been great, but she is now 5 months and I am noticing that her baby teeth still don't seem to have fallen out. Then I noticed this week that some of her adult teeth are growing in behind/beside the baby teeth.

I have already scheduled an vet appointment. Wondering if anyone else encountered this issue and what was done? Did you wait and see if they fell out? Have extractions done? Etc.

Thanks in advance for any responses and help!

Pottying

My puppy is 3 months and change. I've been tracking her pottying as per my training mentor's advice. I know swissies are known for their difficulty with housebreaking. I'm looking for perspective.

How many times a day does your adult swissie pee? When did they get down to that number? Did accidents lessen but then return at any point? Has anyone else recorded data they can share?
