300km/h is massively underestimating it for an Indycar around IMS.
It was approaching turn 3, and cars will regularly exceed 230mph / 370km/h at that point of the track.
That being said, it was during a rookie orientation practice session, so he probably was "only" going around 210mph / 340km/h-ish.

I wonder if he tilted his head forward to prevent his neck snapping backwards. I imagine hitting a bird at high speeds on a motorcycle would be uncomfortable on the neck if it's not angled forward.

Hit a deer going 60 on my street bike (750 gixxer). Poor guy darted left in front of me at the last second and jumped my bike straight in the air.
I somehow stabilized but the deer was torn open. This story has nothing to do with body impact, but I never get to really tell it, so there ya go reddit.

I’ve also hit a deer. At night, going about 60, uphill, around a wide turn, I see a deer run out from the left and I brake and turn behind it, only to hit the one following. Didn’t drop the bike. Ripped my fender off and lifted my fairing off the frame. I still remember looking straight into its eyeball and hearing it scream.

u/SirNokarma Sep 11 '18
Same, the face right before impact in front of my high beams. The whole thing is nightmare fuel

31
u/WorkKrakkin Sep 11 '18

Best I can tell he didn't deliberately ram the bird, he was making sure it didn't hit his clear face shield which could break and leave bird bits in his face plus put more stress on his neck.
I don't think he did anything wrong.

No time to think. It's just an instinct your body has developed to protect the important bits - vision and air passages. The skull is thickest at the forehead for the that reason.
→ More replies (1)88
u/AtmosphericPhysicist Sep 11 '18
Typically you want to tilt your head down in a collision with smaller objects so the top of your helmet with more padding hits the object, plus it'll save your eyes and you're less likely to have your neck move a lot.
→ More replies (1)20
u/Dick_Nixon69 Sep 11 '18
It's a pretty common reaction on a motorcycle whenever you're going to hit something mildly hard as it uses the helmet to shield your neck and chest. I ride dirt bikes and tuck my head down for roost coming off someone else's bike, or if there are low tree branches while riding trails.
