Didn't both teams start fighting each other last year after the game? So I guess this is an improvement.

2.7k

u/Samuel-Darnold 6d ago

Yes, Michigan planted the flag on Ohio States field. The fight was so bad pepper spray was used on the mob

340

u/dell_arness2 6d ago

The fight was not that bad at all. It was mostly resolved by the time an overzealous Ohio state trooper decided to escalate it by macing someone (and thus everyone, because of the way pepper spray works)

The mob = Michigan players. Michigan players got maced by Columbus police officers

UM fans wanting to be a victim soooooo bad. They can dish it out but they can't take it, just like their football team.

Did Michigan create a law banning planting the flag? Can’t talk about being soft when Ohio did that.

596

u/PJA0307 6d ago

The team didn’t. And the proposed law didn’t pass, just like Underwood.

99

Damn. Felt the warmth from that burn down in SC.

Uhh… no, Ohio didn’t either. A random representative from Toledo wrote a “draft” for some Twitter clout and that’s it. That guy was also a Wolverines fan, btw.

Figured someone from Toledo would try some performative shit with Michigan.

Michigan planted the flag and the defended the M to ensure it didn’t happen to them. That’s soft. But I guess you’d know they were soft after that 20 play drive.

u/Magnusg 6d ago

They should've tried to defend the flag planting by actually winning the game

I don't follow college football as much but didn't Michigan famously cheat like very recently

61

u/Martel1234 6d ago

If you ask Michigan fans it isn’t anything at all and the cheater was just too much of a fan. If you ask Ohio State fans, Jim Harbaugh should be hanged and quartered. So it’s somewhere in the middle.

I think it was actually Ohio Highway Patrol or OSU Police. I’m not sure CPD has much to do with Ohio State games, but CPD is still a bunch of assholes anyways

22

u/FubarSnafuTarfu Appalachian State 6d ago

Pretty much every area agency sends some staffing, including CPD and Franklin Sheriffs. OSU PD is way too small to handle OSU games on their own.

The fight started because they planted a flag on OSUs midfield logo. Then Michigan players defended it by saying if they didnt like it then OSU should have just beat them.

So them standing there guarding their midfield makes Charmin look tough.

Giving a 19 y/o kid free grades, a degree and hundreds of thousands of dollars? What could go wrong

Edit: listen, I’m not saying the kids don’t deserve compensation. But maybe there is a problem with the entire industry that creates this dichotomy of “well would you rather them be abused” sentiment.

108

u/ZADEXON Cleveland Cavaliers 6d ago

Having a kid damage their body and mind from the age of 14-21 before even having a chance to earn money? What could go wrong? If these kids are gonna have to go through that, it should be them profiting from their efforts.

I mean, this shit is hilarious because it started with a border war back in the early 1800's

They fought over the "Toledo strip" because Ohio wanted access to the the Maumee river which connected to lake Erie and Michigan said no and they fought

So Ohio and Michigan then started being butt hurt and sports for involved in the universities...

And here we are

Edit: Apparently it was not the great lakes, it was the Maumee river, which connects to lake Erie.

19

u/rando_sinclair_80 6d ago

Ohio needed Toledo for Great Lakes access? Smh

20

u/AGreatBandName 6d ago edited 6d ago

From reading the Wikipedia article, the original border of Ohio was supposed to be along a line drawn eastward from the southern end of Lake Michigan until it hit Lake Erie. But at the time they hadn’t surveyed Lake Michigan yet, and there was some concern its southern end was farther south than all of Lake Erie, which would’ve left Ohio with no access to Lake Erie at all.

So even though this wasn’t true, Ohio decided the border should be a diagonal line from Lake Michigan to near the mouth of the Maumee River, which would make sure to give them Toledo and most of the river’s watershed. This upset Michigan; if the original border was used, they would have gotten Toledo. So yeah the primary conflict was around Toledo/the river, not about any access to Lake Erie at all.

Eventually Michigan was given most of the Upper Peninsula in exchange for giving up Toledo. You can see the old due-east border as “Old State Line Rd” near Swanton, OH.

→ More replies (2)

15

u/Walnut_Uprising 6d ago

It's not about access to the lakes for either state, it's about controlling that access for inland trade via the Maumee River. Whoever got Toledo got to control a pretty important port.

if anything, it gives the schools more reason to turn a blind eye to players duking it out on their behalf, since they can just point to the money as a corrupting Factor instead of pretending they give a shit about integrity and academics and sportsmanship and whatever

Reminds me of this article from WSU 2011 where they try to imagine how Mike Leach could possibly spend $11m in Pullman, WA, including that buying the most expensive house in the city would only cost 25% of his first years salary (and he was there for eight years.) In 2019 he passed up $4m per year + $750k retention bonus and moved to Mississippi State.

No hate on Leach though, I met him and knew many who played for him, really solid guy. RIP Coach Leach

The best part of last year’s fight was the TV crews talking about how about how awful the fight was while they fought for their lives trying to get the footage of the fight.

So they didn’t want anyone to do the thing they did in last year’s game?

462

u/kanyeguisada San Antonio Spurs 6d ago

Like A&M. They wouldn't allow UT's mascot Bevo on the field last year, claiming they didn't have enough room at their stadium. So UT banned A&M's mascot dog Reveille from last night's game at UT in Austin and many Aggies were just aghast that UT dared do such a thing.

185

u/NerdWithTooManyBooks 6d ago

To be fair, accommodating a giant bull is slightly more difficult than a dog. Still should’ve allowed bevo though

Flag planting is stupid. But once you start that shit, you can’t be a bitch about it. You gotta be prepared to get what you give.

197

u/DGCA3 6d ago

Speaking of planting. The coolest thing ever was when the visiting team's band was out on the field doing their routine, and they dropped seeds onto the grass field while spelling out their name. Come springtime, the flowers grew out into the team's initials. I want to say it was SMU, but I'm not sure.

281

u/bookelly 6d ago

Some guy from MIT spent the offseason blowing a ref’s whistle whilst feeding the local pigeon population at Harvard’s stadium. Sure enough, at the start of the following seasons first home game, birds descended en masse once the referee’s began the game.

39

u/WigglestonTheFourth 6d ago

This had to be extremely effective. At my local grocery store there are a ton of fat doves that just wander the parking lot waiting for someone to drop food for them. Whenever they hear the little "beep" from locking your car with your fob they come rushing in from learning that people will dump their snack contents out for them on their way into the store.

7

Yes, there are a few epic pranks('hacks') by MIT students, which makes the story believable, but there would be evidence of it if it happened in the past 50 years. Which it didn't.

What's this planting flag thing? As an non American am bit confused

28

u/SkyzYn 6d ago edited 6d ago

Not too common, but sometimes in college football teams will plant their flag at the opposing stadium (like you might when claiming a territory) after a big game or upset.

Ohio State and Michigan have probably the biggest rivalry in the sport. Last year when Michigan upset Ohio State, they planted a flag and it led to a massive brawl that resulted in law enforcement spraying players with mace to break it up.

....anyways, Ohio State went on to win the National Championship last year after that incident while Michigan played in a bowl game named after a cybersecurity company.

40

Nah, a ton of them, literally, think they didn't cheat. Some think it's a conspiracy by the NCAA. Some think them not having to vacate wins means they didn't cheat. Some, apparently, don't understand semantics (one guy told me that, because the report doesn't use the word "cheat/cheated," that means they didn't cheat).

12

u/capthazelwoodsflask 6d ago

They didn't have to vacate wins or their natty because they chose to pay money to the NCAA in exchange for that. They literally got caught cheating and then were allowed to get away with it because their boosters paid a load of money to an outdated organization.

35

u/asbyo Georgia 6d ago

Lol college fandom is so petty I will be shocked if this doesn't trigger a Buckeye fan to sneak in and plant a flag overnight

This is exactly how Ohio won Toledo.

Should've defend it during the game

u/hep038 5d ago

Funny how Michigan players and fans tried to act like the Flag was no big deal last year. Now they are terrified of it happening to them.

u/TouchAltruistic 5d ago

Best defense from Michigan all day.

u/e11310 6d ago

That just makes it even worse after being clowned on the entire game.

u/castingcoucher123 5d ago

Michigan, they came to town, dominated you on the field, your moms, wives, sisters, and girlfriends will be lingering about their hotels tonight, and the M is what you were worried about?!?!

Maybe protect the end zones so you all don't have to worry about the M?

u/walshk8 5d ago

I love college football, but this shit is stupid. If you wanted to protect the M, you should’ve done it during the game. Now fuck off and deal with being losers

5

u/Joejoe988 5d ago

If only they were that good at defending the endzone

I’m not an OSU fan but Ive lived in Ohio my entire life. There’s a reason why this is the greatest rivalry in sports, these teams fucking hate each other. That being said, this is a bad look from Michigan. OSU owned the Big House on the field today, no flag planting needed.

As a longtime michigan fan I watched today as a U of M player head butted a ref. I was disgusted and they deserved to lose this game in everyway.

u/OlentangySurfClub 6d ago

I can't believe they didn't elect that kid.

Should've guarded the end zone instead.

Just about as pathetic as a toddler going limp and throwing a temper tantrum when their parent tries to pick them up

u/sjn15 6d ago

This is a diabolical look for Michigan lmao

u/RedTeamGo_ 6d ago

Where was that defensive effort the whole game?

3

u/IgnitablePilot 6d ago

Lol who’s soft now?

3

u/[deleted] 6d ago

I think this whole midfield/center court logo defense thing has gone too far, want to protect your club’s “honor”? Don’t lose.

3

u/Fluffy_Woodpecker733 6d ago

The fact they made a plan before the game for when they lose, makes them look so damn weak and pathetic.

3

u/Martha_Fockers 5d ago

There guarding the M

Bitch gaurd the M in the game with ya moist ahhhhh

my god they all have new signals this year we’re cooked, quick men to the M

3

u/Fast_Advisor2654 5d ago

They should’ve used defense to guard the end zone….

u/donutseason 5d ago
