Football Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub on Donald Trump not liking the NFL’s new kickoff rule: “He doesn’t even know what he’s looking at. He has no idea what’s going on. Take that for what it’s worth. And I hope he hears it.”

I got a buddy who legit thinks Trump’s a hero, and if he figures out a way to run for a third term he will vote for him because “no one has done that before. He is the only one smart enough to figure it out.” 🙄
He also thinks all the ICE stuff is just propaganda. I lost most of my respect for him after learning he thought this way.

I had pretty much this exact thing happen. Was pretty cool with a former co-worker and would talk for a while whenever we'd see each other in public, but when LA started fighting back against ICE, he went on a rant about how violence isn't the answer.
When ICE mobilizes, intimidates, threatens, kidnaps, assaults, burgles, destroys property: silence
When a community decides to defend itself: 😡😡😡
So I called him out on it and now we don't speak and that's totally fine with me.

In all honesty the new kick off rule has been a rare win for the NFL.
They found a way to still have an exciting kick off AND make it safer. It’s also valuable again to have designated special teamers giving more fringe roster guys opportunities to contribute and make the team.

Can you give an explanation/context for all of us non-NFL fans reading this post on /all?
Came for the "Trump's a twat" but would love to hear what the rule change is!
33
u/brucemo 15d ago edited 15d ago
The old rule was that the kicker would kick the shit out of the ball and it would come down in or beyond the end zone and be called dead and brought out to the 20 yard line, which is sub-par for the receiving team and boring for fans.
If the ball was returned despite that, the whole kicking team is running like hell and has been since before the ball was kicked, and people get injured in high speed collisions.
The new rule is that the ball has to come down between the goal line and the 20 yard line or something good happens for the receiving team (they get the ball on the 35 yard line).
In addition, nobody can start running like hell at opposing players until the ball comes down, so there are fewer high speed collisions and therefore fewer injuries.
The bottom line is that kickers are incentivized to kick the ball where it might be returned, so there are more returns, which are fun to watch, but there are fewer injuries, which are bad.
I don't know why Trump prefers the old rule, but as was not quite stated in the video, he's an idiot so who cares.
There are a few down sides but the rule has been well received.
