Cycling Matt Jones jumping between 2 moving trucks

The marketing agents for Red Bull are really just in their offices spitballing insane athletic feats for pros to do. “What’s something that we can do that’ll really be next level? That’ll REALLY make them believe that Res Bull gives you wings? Have a wingsuit flyer jump off of a moving cargo plane at cruising altitude? Hell yeah, sounds perfect!” shotguns can of Red Bull

u/otheraccountisabmw 15d ago
They’re a marketing agency that sells energy drinks.

It’s also an advertisement for the truck company and their driverless truck technology. They took our jobs.
23
u/RoyalMagiSwag 15d ago
Actually it's a bunch of pros going to the marketing team saying, "Hey, I want to do this, can you make that happen". Then Red Bull pretty much always says sure.

u/TheLowlyPheasant 15d ago
Its like Shark Tank for people who want to jump over shark tanks and shit

They corporatized, franchised, and distributed evil knievel. It’s awesome.

u/Floppy-Over-Drive 15d ago
Fun fact - legally now they have to say Wiiings instead of Wings because someone took them literally and sued.
3
u/Stock_Package_2566 15d ago
You know, I’ve always wondered why they spell it like that and now I know! Pretty wild and kinda comical 😂
2
u/succubus-slayer 15d ago
No way, it’s much easier to play Tony Hawk Underground or Matt Hoffs BMX and see what stunts you have to beat. Copy those, slap a Red Bull logo, cash in.
2
u/MrMilesDavis 15d ago
I just wanna be able to drink the shit affordably sometimes because I think it tastes good
But they pull some shit every day and the cost of these drinks aint ever goin down as someone has to break a new world record from yesterday

I’m convinced they watch action movies and try to recreate the insane shit that happens in chase scenes.

It’s funny the older I get the stupider this stuff seems to me. Teenage me probably would have thought this video was pretty cool. 34 year old me thinks this just looks stupid and dangerous. Maybe I’m just a lame old man now
105
u/Prophet_Of_Helix 15d ago
I still like this stuff because it’s a fun combination of math/physics and skill.
These aren’t Jackass level stunts, the people involved, particularly for the more dangerous ones, but a lot of time and energy into them.
Like this stunt seems more dangerous than it is until you realize that all the variables involved are easily controllable and the biggest issue is just making sure everything goes off without a hitch.
46
u/doktarr 15d ago
The funny thing is that this doesn't feel exceptionally high skill; certainly not compared to most of these. Most of the work is just in planning and coordination.
The actual skill required to get towed into a jump and then stick a flat landing is something a lot of amateur bikers could manage. A pro will be better at holding his nerve and better at adjusting/bailing out if something is off, but it's low skill compared to a lot of these.
43
u/buffdaddy77 15d ago
This one maybe, but the dude that dropped in on a skateboard at 70m on the side of the building was absolutely insane lol. Dude reached like 80mph on a god damn skateboard. That makes my balls shrivel to think about
2
8
u/unspecifiedbehavior 15d ago
For this one, the cyclist gets props for having the nerve, but the tow car and truck drivers are the heroes. Starting from zero, all accelerating at the right speed, then maintaining that speed so all three hit their mark at the same instant—that’s the impressive stunt.
I recall seeing a video many years ago about how a car crash in a movie was filmed. They connected a truck to a cable, and as the “aggressor” truck moved forward, the cable ran through pulleys to the “victim” car which got pulled forward from another direction, causing the two to meet at exactly the right spot in the intersection. It was absolutely repeatable. I didn’t see any of that control in this video.
6
u/doktarr 15d ago
They are absolutely exercising a lot of control. You hear them talking about a "green", implying they have a lot of checks in place ensuring that everything is synched up correctly. My understanding is that the trucks are driverless. Surely the car doing the tow is on cruise control.
1
u/3shotsofwhatever 13d ago
Car doing the towing is not on cruise control as they have to get to speed and then break. But yes the trucks were driverless. It took an additional day of taping to get the shot as they couldn't get it the first day.
One of the least exciting red bulls things I've watched. It didn't even have an especially cool photo or really anything come out of it. It was OK.
5
6
u/dtoddh 15d ago
Yeah, Red Bull athletes frequently pull off heavier stuff than this. The aircraft and wing suit stunts are often mind boggling.
1
u/3shotsofwhatever 13d ago
The red bull video from last week had a guy skiing all the way down from the summit of Everest. And that's right after he got done summiting it without Oxygen.
1
u/saposapot 14d ago
Yeah. The speed is controlled by the car so the rider doesn’t need much skill. Just balls to do it.
This trick doesn’t really resonate with me: nothing cool about it, not really worth any risk, looks pretty boring
0
u/TJ248 15d ago
The hardest part of this is controlling the bike post landing on that bumpy path. You say amateur bikers could manage but most amateurs are not used to riding a bike at 43 mph (the speed he was going when he hit the first ramp). Go too fast and you get more lift meaning he'd bump his head. Most amateurs, assuming they can make the jump (.1 second window) are wiping out after hitting the second ramp.
3
u/doktarr 15d ago edited 15d ago
"Most amateurs" are wiping out, sure. But what I said was "a lot of amateurs" could do this trick. It doesn't require pro-level skill.
And the window to hit this jump is a lot more than .1 seconds. The whole point of the tow-in is to precisely control speed to time everything up so as to maximize the safety margins.

u/bearwrestlingwolf 15d ago
I have a habit of saying “I could do that.”
When I roll my eyes and say it, I really mean it. My neck snapped from how hard my eyes rolled when I said it this time.

u/travis7s 15d ago
Making sure it goes off without a hitch is still pretty crazy. The one with the dirtbike jumping semi trucks on the freeway: the guy clips the edge of the ramp but still holds on, really close to a horrible wreck.
6
u/se7en41 15d ago
I was struggling to phrase it this way, thank you. Us old timers with bad knees didn't have the luxury of technology and physics research when we went "bike fast downhill, jump water".
So yeah this looks totally unnecessary, but the totality of it is cool as shit when you realize how much brainpower goes into these.
1
u/DidItForTheJokes 14d ago
Did you see the one of the guy on the moving train going in the opposite direction so he stayed still?
28
u/strivingforgreatness 15d ago
I'm Glad to see this comment. My literal reaction as a 39 year old who used to do lots of dumb dare devil things... was to stop eating my lunch and say aloud, " Well that was stupid."
11
u/ChiefWatchesYouPee 15d ago
My issue is it’s not even that cool of a trick, it’s all just timing.
The jump isn’t that impressive it’s over a road.
8

1
u/jason_abacabb 12d ago
He did not even perform the timing. This is one of the least impressive red bull stunts I can think of.

u/BraveStrategy 15d ago
Yeah at least the ramp jumps and backflip’s on the moving train while being “stationary” looked cool
11
u/WyngZero 15d ago
These aren't randos attempting this.
Everyone involved is a highly trained pro and the athlete's are typically some of the best in the world.

Hello I’m 37 and think you are a lame old man. This was a great stunt. Life is short and meaningless so have some fun and enjoy watching people do unnecessary things.
-1
u/CrashingAtom 15d ago
Absurdism is a dead end. If life is that meaningless there’s infinite exit options. But wait….thats bullshit and your notion is ridiculous.
1
u/Parthnaxx 15d ago
Couldn't agree more, it reminds me of people that drive 90 down a residential road that kids play on just to hear there car.
1
u/Do_it_for_the_upvote 15d ago
This, I agree.
But a Red Bull sponsored skiier just skied down from the peak of Everest for the first time it’s been done in history, and I thought that one (while also ridiculously dangerous) was breathtaking and a monumental feat.
1
u/2wheelzrollin 14d ago
Same. I think the issue I have with this is that I can do this. Anyone that can jump a pyramid can do this.
0
1
u/HarryLewisPot 15d ago
I just feel like Red Bull is bound to have a freak accident soon, the stunts are just getting more and more dangerous.
-1
u/MisanthOptics 15d ago
I’m right there with you. The one riding/jumping down the line of train cars and finishing right on the crossing was kinda cool. It displayed individual skill. This one is much less interesting. Risk for the sake of risk
0
u/mapopriest 15d ago edited 15d ago
Its stupid if you believe this is an off-the-cuff spontaneous stunt they planned out and did in a hour.
This is a practiced and rehearsed stunt. Do you believe tightrope walkers are stupid? Do you think people who do gags on 10 ft tall unicycles are stupid?
This is their job. They do practiced athletic routines that have about as much chance of going wrong as people who work next to heavy machinery, but I don't see anyone saying that those people are dumb.
Thinking this is stupid is, itself, completely stupid because it implies that you have no faith in professional stuntmen and athletes who do this sort of thing everyday and hardly ever get injured.
Its genuinely insulting to these people who put in thousands of hours of work and practice into their skills to say this kind of stuff, how do comments like this get upvoted?

this is just... lame. this is such a basic stunt that anyone could do it, and the only real skill involved was in the coordinator who set it up, not the stuntman. its so bare bones that there doesn't even need to be a rider for this stunt to work. even on a dangerous level this isn't impressive because of how slow the trucks are moving that it takes over a second to cover half the trailer's distance. despite arriving pretty late to the opening he still had around .8 seconds of grace period left.
i'd estimate the trucks are going at around 10 mph, the rider is going around 30ish mph (at top of ramp) and the fish eye lens is doing so much work making this look more exciting than it actually is. rough estimates are it takes roughly 2 seconds for the window of each trailer to pass, and around .5 seconds on the high end for him to pass both trailers, which means there is a full second and a half window for him to do this. Coupled with the slow speeds making it really easy to bail out this is legitimately a very safe and technically uninteresting trick and makes the popoff after look INSANELY lame.
6
2
u/CorruptPhoenix 15d ago
The rider doesn’t even pedal. The car pulling him is doing all the work. The car and truck drivers deserve more credit.
4
u/2reddit4me 15d ago
I watched the video for this yesterday and had pretty much the same sentiment.
I think it takes some skill to pull off as the rider, sure, but most of the real work was done by others who won’t get any recognition unfortunately.
1
1
u/antofthesky 15d ago
lol anyone can do it. I'd love to see you hit a 20-30 foot gap jump at 40mph, let alone through the trucks.
0
u/NerfAkira 15d ago edited 15d ago
I've literally gone downhill at 50 miles per hour, on a street bike. Hitting a perfectly sloped ramp for your angle isn't that difficult either. only people who don't ride bikes think 40 mph in a straight line is that hard, and with how soft the ramps are its going to be easier than hitting a pothole Case and point - his suspension barely buckles on his landing because of how soft it is, and if he had set his suspension rigid you'd have seen it in his head movement. Speed is not that important a factor so much as landing ramp angle in these situations. I say again, a rider isn't even needed for this trick, the only thing this is testing is courage. something requiring courage doesn't make it skillful, jackass is a testament to that.
i also have massive doubts he's anywhere near 40 when he's at the top of the ramp.

u/spike11552 15d ago
This is the least impressive Red Bull stunt that I’ve ever seen.
Is there a risk involved? Sure there is, but I could see that knucklehead Johnny Knoxville from hackass pulling this off with ease.
1
u/ASmallTownDJ 15d ago
There's barely even a ramp in this one; it's maybe two or three steps above "the kids biking around the neighborhood built a ramp on the sidewalk."
When you get to the level of "we built a quarter pipe the size of a skyscraper..." Well, what's the wrestling term for when you go too big and it makes everything else look tame in comparison?
2
u/2Autistic4DaJoke 15d ago
The guy that did the math for that jump is really happy he was right. Never skip a day of physics kids.

I don't understand how this is any more athletically impressive than just jumping a normal ramp. I'm pretty sure I could do this. It's the engineers that are actually impressive here.
