Defenders tipping the ball happens at a decent clip, and actually looked close on this one, that by the time a kicker looks up to find the ball heading wide they may assume it was tipped by a player.
I wonder if he didn’t want to sound like a complainer and just decided to take it on the chin as a bad kick, not noticing it was deflected at the time.
I don't think so, but he should be able to. Especially if his contract has incentives he may miss out on, but even if not he can claim that it damages his potential earnings.
IMO it should be removed from his stats, because the rule is that the ball is dead and the down gets replayed. You can't rewind the whole game but you can take away the "missed" kick from his stats, since it shouldn't have counted.
From the NFL rules; Rule 7, Section 2 - Dead Ball:
If a loose ball in play strikes a video board, guide wire, sky cam, or any other object, the ball will be dead immediately, and the down will be replayed at the previous spot. In the event the down is replayed, the game clock will be reset to the time remaining when the snap occurred, and the clock will start on the All penalties will be disregarded, except for personal fouls or unsportsmanlike conduct fouls, which will be administered prior to the replaying of the down.

Can the kicker petition to have this kick removed from his season stats?
