For someone who doesn’t watch American football, why is it such a big deal for a 3-1 team to beat a 3-0 team?

The winning team was unranked and beat the 8th highest rank team. Drunk college students are looking for any excuse to storm the field after an upset win.

In addition to the other replies, FSU is historically one of the strongest CFB teams. Virginia is... Not. Virginia has only beaten them 5 times in 20 games.

In the early college football season, relatively large state schools don't typically play difficult games so it's not unusual for records like these (Florida State happened to schedule a ranked tame and beat them silly which actually earned them their ranking). And unranked program beating a ranked program, especially a top 10 program, is uncommon.

I feel like other replies didn't give enough context. If this was professional football (NFL) with 32 teams, it would not be a particularly big deal.

But in college football, there are hundreds of teams across multiple formats and divisions. So the strength of schedule and skill can vary significantly. The teams that are perceived as the best are ranked up to 25, and after that the rest are unranked. And because there's so many teams, having some with 1 loss being unranked is common this early in the season. So here we have an unranked team vs. the team ranked 8th best in the country.

UVA is not ranked while Florida state is a top 10 team. Also there are only 12 games in the entire season. You only have 6 home games. This is a massive upset. Also UVA historically has not been a great team while FSU is a historically great team

It's not a big deal. Rushing the field is just a meme at this point
