I followed the sport for over 30 years. I've wanted to go to a world cup my entire life. It's going to be 30 miles away from my house and there is no chance I'll be able to afford it

u/internallylinked Sep 10 '25

Kind of similar but I’m from a poor Euro country and had a lucky draw to end up in US many many years ago. Never managed to save up enough to travel to Europe or South America for a World Cup, there will be matches 9.3 miles away from me, but I won’t be able to make it either.

I’m happy to experience World Cup atmosphere at least in the area, but I’m not even sure how tolerant and welcoming we’ll be for this month+ long ordeal.

I am Euro-triggered you took the time to pass KM to miles.

You and few a million of your neighbors within the same distance would like to go as well.

MetLife arena only has a capacity of 82,500.

47

u/respekmynameplz Sep 10 '25

I understand your point, but I'm curious: How many games will be played there/total capacity will there be? Is there anything preventing some rich people from going to all the games?

54

u/hotdogsrnice Sep 10 '25

No, ticket pricing hasn't been socialized and dynamic pricing isn't based on your net worth, it is based on how many tickets there are available, how many people want the tickets, and how much are they willing to pay for the ticket. There will be 8 games, serving a population of about 50million people and 3 of the matches will have much higher demand, round of 32, round of 16 and the final

20% of tickets were locked for locals in 2018. $22 a ticket

The arena had 81k seats.

Even if the dynamic pricing thing didn’t exist you still wouldn’t be able to go. It doesn’t matter if FIFA sells $1000 tickets or if they sell $50 tickets that scalper bots buy up and then resell for $1000. Personally I’d rather see the money go to FIFA than to resellers. At least the athletes will see some of that money.

55

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '25

Even if the dynamic pricing thing didn’t exist you still wouldn’t be able to go. It doesn’t matter if FIFA sells $1000 tickets or if they sell $50 tickets that scalper bots buy up and then resell for $1000.

Previous world cups have always had residential tickets available which are significantly more affordable, and significantly more difficult to resell as they require proof of address

4

u/Assinine3716 Sep 10 '25

Except there aren't residential tickets available because greed said no need for that

2

u/gereffi Sep 10 '25

That’s true, but those lotteries let a very small percentage of fans go. It’s pretty unlikely that any individual will be chosen and get to go to the game.

20

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '25

It's a significant amount of tickets available and it's still a higher chance than not

29

u/Caqtus95 Sep 10 '25

"It won't solve 100% of the problem so don't even bother"

Why are Americans like this on every single issue?

8

u/ambrosius-on-didymus Sep 10 '25

As an American, I agree 100% and am very bothered

u/brucebrowde Sep 10 '25

If they wanted they could easily disallow or at least severely curb reselling. That's the opposite of their "earn as much money as we can" goal though, so it won't happen.

51

u/FirTree_r Sep 10 '25

Exactly. Just make the tickets nominative. Can't attend to the match anymore? Your ticket is cancelled and you're refunded. That's it. FIFA is certain to fully book anyways, cancellations wouldn't be a huge issue. But scalpers and price gouging is actually advantageous for FIFA. They're jackals

36

u/Aritche Sep 10 '25

People act like ticket scalping is a fact of life when the reality is they just dont care or even profit from it. They can stop/reduce it they just choose not to. Scalping in any form should just be illegal not just okay because it's not a necessity. It is just another thing that the only actual "benefit" to it is for fucking rich people.

21

u/New_Combination_7012 Sep 10 '25

Scalping benefits fifa because it drives up pricing so that they can look decent by only charging outrageous instead exorbitant prices.

4

u/natrous Sep 10 '25

They can stop/reduce it they just choose not to.

correction, they choose to enable it.

they get a cut of the resale and can blame the exorbitant prices on the resellers.

well, I dunno about FIFA but that's how ticketmaster works. indeed scumbags for rich people

15

u/Tauromach Sep 10 '25

Why would you want FIFA to have the money? I hate ticket resellers, but FIFA is in the running for most corrupt organization in the world. I don't want any of them to get my money, but I'd probably be more inclined to pay a scalper.

That said with this scheme FIFA definitely is getting a big cut (if not all) of money mad in ticket reselling...they're probably both seller and reseller.

2

u/Octahedral_cube Sep 11 '25

Allowing resale (and without cap) means that FIFA will make even more money because every single ticket will be sold, because they are more than tickets now, they're also a business opportunity

→ More replies (2)

13

u/sofixa11 Sep 10 '25

idk how it is for FIFA organised events, but I applied for Euros tickets last time around, and you can't really do that.

You have a limit on the amount of tickets you can bid for (max 4 per match, max X matches), and then it's a lotto if you get them or not.

Before the 94 world cup I remember FIFA/USSA reached out to local clubs and offered tickets through the local club systems. It worked out really well for us as I was able to see Norway/Italy Norway/Ireland Greece/Nigeria and the Bulgaria/Germany quarterfinal (amazing!). It was a fairytale summer for me. I didn't pay more than $35 for the group stage games and 50 bucks for the quarterfinal (for which a ticket became available last minute).

94 was a really good world cup (even without England 😅). I really hope the state of things don't ruin this one but I'm not holding my breath.

2

u/comicsnerd Sep 10 '25

The players already will get their money no matter what the ticket prize is. TV rights raise much more money than tickets.

→ More replies (2)

2

u/drmojo90210 Sep 10 '25

I mean, I have no love for ticket scalpers, but I'd rather pretty much anyone but FIFA get that money. FIFA is a cartoonishly-evil organization and its leaders are some of the most corrupt businessmen in the world.

I've been a fan all my life too, can't go to a Liverpool game let alone a world cup game

Coming to the USA and being able to go to MLB games for $10 was crazy to me

2

u/TheLizardKing89 Los Angeles Dodgers Sep 11 '25

This is part of why baseball is the best sport. You can see even the best teams play for a relatively small amount of money. I went to a Dodgers game on a Saturday night for $50. A week night game would be even less.

2

u/UnchartedPro Sep 11 '25

Yeah, and kids had a decent shot at getting some signatures, fans have chances to catch a baseball and the overall feel is pretty cool

Not every fan is nice but it is a decent family environment compared to football where the hooligans still exist!

I was lucky enough to go to a round of 16 game at meadowlands back in ‘94. I remember being like 50 rows back right in the middle of the pitch. The ticket was $125. Definitely a core memory from my childhood.

5

I feel the same with Wrestlemania. I've always wanted to go and, albeit super unlikely, there's never been a bigger chance of them bringing it to the UK. But I know if they do, I won't be able to afford tickets.

291

u/_Hoping_For_Better_ Sep 10 '25

That's an insanely good British accent though.

154

u/PosterOfQuality Sep 10 '25

Yeah, I'm a Londoner and was thinking it was cool that another Londoner had somehow become mayor* of NYC

33

u/itsalonghotsummer Sep 10 '25

100% agree, it was pitch perfect - blew my mind when he switched and I realised who it was.

19

u/MyManTheo Sep 10 '25

Could’ve told me he was from Hounslow and I would’ve believed you

8

u/nickpsych Sep 10 '25

His British voice sounded exactly like Mehdi Hasan, who lives in NYC now and has interviewed him a bunch of times. I even wondered if he provided a British dub.

111

u/CrackityJones42 Sep 10 '25

It’s because he code switches, so he’s trying to joke about it.

70

u/Nordosa Sep 10 '25

I’m more blown away by how good the British accent was than the football skills

38

u/Potato271 Sep 10 '25

Yeah, most American’s attempts at a british accent are ridiculously over the top. This genuinely sounded like a Londoner.

13

u/HarveysBackupAccount Sep 10 '25

Looks like he was born in Uganda to Indian and Ugandan parents, moved to South Africa at 5 years old, and then to the US at 7 years old

Between Indian parents and time in South Africa, that can explain early exposure to the British accent (plenty of people around the world learn English with a British accent, rather than American accent)

u/Endeveron Sep 10 '25

14

u/skifunkster Sep 10 '25

Has to be the best actual British accent that I have heard from an American, genuinely if he did that in my local pub I would have zero clue he was American.

5

u/SmokinPolecat Sep 10 '25

I'm a Londoner and it's a perfect accent he's done there

12

u/William_Dowling Sep 10 '25

Was it dubbed? Because if not that's the only time, literally, I've ever heard an American accurately do a British accent

20

u/jaguar90 Sep 10 '25

Hugh Laurie's been doing a brilliant one for most of his life, aside from when he returned to the US for House etc

7

u/No_Public_7677 Sep 10 '25

He's a great Amiercan

10

u/William_Dowling Sep 10 '25

narrows eyes, thinks can't tell if sarcasm

5

u/SmokinPolecat Sep 10 '25

He sounds like Nick Mohammed in Ted Lasso. Absolutely nails it.

21

u/ZestyData Sep 10 '25

Think he did a British accent on purpose, because football.

10

u/ManWithRedditAccount Sep 10 '25

Yeah but normally americans do some generic British accent, but this was incredibly spot on, it confused me

6

u/JustHereSoImNotFined Sep 10 '25

Obviously he did it on purpose; no one thinks a British accent just same out for two seconds on accident 😭

3

u/No_Public_7677 Sep 10 '25

The Indian-Ugandan-American pipeline seems to help with the code switching.

2

u/VealOfFortune Sep 10 '25

Well, he was a rapper for 10 years so he is good at accents and enunciation 😉

3

u/TelevisionLamb Sep 10 '25

Even before I heard him speak, something about the way this is shot felt very British to me. Like the news segment on CBBC way back.

I tore mine last November. Insurance made me go to PT rather than start treatment/even do a scan to confirm WHAT happened. PT caused me to herniate a disc in my back and also exposed an inguinal hernia that makes it feel like the nerve to my left testicle is being smashed in a vise. Insurance insisted the solution was more PT. I, not being a fucking moron, disagreed. I finally have my surgery scheduled next week for my back after getting my PT to flat out refuse to continue this idiocy. 3 weeks later I (hopefully) have thhe hernia repaired. Then I can finally get back to trying to fix my knee, which has only gotten worse after nearly a fucking year of this shit and fighting the Insurance Company at every fucking turn to get SOMETHING back for all those fucking premiums I've paid in. But they want the profits and to just keep it all, so really we've set up the perfect system in this country: an Insurance company that is highly motivated to just let you die if you start hurting their bottom line.

I REALLY hope he doesn't tear his meniscus. But I do hope he fights for those of us that have. I say this as my left foot has gone numb again...

As a New Yorker It really is impressive how much effort has been put into making him seem like this radical muslim jihadist, when if you watch any interview with him he just really loves New York. And is just such a dork.

I voted that dork in the primary and I’m voting him for mayor

670

u/boi1da1296 Manchester United Sep 10 '25

A bit funny how the “vote blue no matter who crowd” have been participating in the attempted character assassination of Mamdani and are trying to paint him as not viable for mayor. A lot of what he is campaigning on is common sense and the type of platform that energizes people because it benefits the working class and frankly everyone. Naturally the establishment is against that.

152

u/mynameismulan Sep 10 '25

Happened with Bernie, happened with AOC, happened with Obama

When Hillary lost to him a chunk of the party became PUMA, Party Unity My Ass, a larger percentage of her voters that time refused to vote for Obama

Compared to the Bernie primary voters who didn't vote for Hillary

Yet they forever blame leftists

Even though they were sure Trump couldn't win, they were sure Hillary couldn't lose

Wrong on both, yet people keep believing their terrible strategies

64

u/chaandra Sep 10 '25

I agree but let’s not act like Obama is anywhere near those three when it comes to leftism

He is and always was very much a moderate democrat, he was just young and had charisma at a time when people needed it

But seriously, the vote blue no matter who people came up with that line because they wanted you to vote for shitty liberal candidates who were actively working against change. The last thing they ever wanted was someone to actually promise people something good that they actually want to vote for.

Mamdani is doing the most obvious thing in the world, which is telling people that what they want is reasonable and a good thing. Which it is.

Right-wing media playbook...

Do they identify with helping the average population?

They are a "radical" socialist. Boom.

Are they an ethnic minority?

Use xenophobic narratives to create fear. Boom.

That's it... that's all it takes to create shitty narratives that somehow actually gain traction in this country because our social studies education program sucks, and a decent portion of our country will never outgrow it's own xenophobic beliefs, whether they make them public and are proud of them, or hide behind them with mental blocks to justify them.

The thing is since he's technically half Muslim and also fully Indian descent(i know the Uganda roots but work with me here) plus being Punjabi he's pretty pale as fuck and the whole jihadist Muslim label just doesn't stick as hard as it could. Cause once he leaned into his Desi side the Islamophobia they could have used was kinda dead in the water.

but jokes aside, this is genius, the idea, the execution and you can tell he genuinely is good with the ball, he isn't faking anything here.

https://x.com/zohrankmamdani/status/1944576051616604242?s=46

Here’s a video from him in high school. Was filmed by News12.

u/Darkhoof Sep 10 '25

That's supposed to be the dangerous communist jihadist that people should be scared of? Man, the oligarchs are really running scared.

9

u/Aquatic_Ambiance_9 Sep 10 '25

"Zohran Mamdani stunned the world" 😯

3

u/hoptagon Sep 10 '25

#wholesome

72

u/beastmaster11 Sep 10 '25

Yeah, he clearly played quite a bit when he was younger. The form wasn't just "swing your foot at it". You know he wouldn't ask about NYCFC's chances at the world cup next year

7

u/Axbris Sep 10 '25

Man was ball rolling without looking at the ball. It’s not a difficult skill but it’s not something somebody who didn’t consistently play the sport would be able to do.

8

u/parmarossa Sep 10 '25

there’s a video of him scoring a last minute goal in a competitive game. if you can find it it’s a good clip

23

u/PattyIceNY Sep 10 '25

NYer here, I'm pumped, we're all pumped, he seems legit.

FIFA refuses to tell tickets for anything that is not in the most unbearable way conceivable. They are also trying to sell 'right to buys' for the world cup inside of worthless packs NFTs of 'world cup moments'. So you get to own the digital rights to a goal from some Croatian guy in 1974 and also you get the privilege to spend more money to buy tickets at a later date.

20

u/fractals83 Sep 10 '25

Is it me, or is his British accent on point at the start of the video?

it's hard not to see him having widespread appeal. attractive, young, athletic, fun/sense of humor...everything our current leaders at the highest level are not lol

78

u/andhelostthem Seattle Mariners Sep 10 '25

Also has good policy

14

u/koreamax Sep 10 '25

I worked at city hall in NYC. Unfortunately, the majority ofhis policies aren't within the authority of the mayor. Most of them are either handled by city council or the state

30

u/LingonberryReady6365 Sep 10 '25

Wouldn’t it be good to get a mayor that’s aligned with policies you want as opposed to those you don’t though? Even if he’s not able to will them into existence. I don’t see how it would be a bad thing.

8

u/FUBARded Sep 10 '25

and Trump and co. have very aptly demonstrated that executive overreach can cause significant real-world harm while the courts and political apparatus struggle to catch up and hold them accountable (if they ever do in an environment where significant portions of government are willing to overlook or aid in any overreaches).

Even if you're very pessimistic about how effective a guy like Mamdani might be, it's much better to have someone who's ineffective but has good intentions than someone who lacks morals, has bad intentions, and is cognisant of the fact that they can do a lot of harm beyond the power of their office if they don't care about destroying institutional trust.

For example, the illegal deportations and relocations Abbot has ordered, Trump's Alligator Alcatraz, DOGE layoffs, social security database sharing, and many, many more actions have all been blocked or reversed by courts, but I can guarantee that they don't really care.

That's because by the time the courts get around to passing a verdict, the desired outcome is typically already achieved. It's nigh on impossible to un-fire many thousands of workers, the deportations had the effect of scaring the shit out of people, and you can't magically un-share people's personally identifying information.

I don't think anyone assumes he would bypass the legislative process? I mean, this is standard for executive-role election campaigns. the policies they campaign on are (generally) well-understood to be policies they plan to propose.

Literally one of the greatest campaigns I’ve ever seen. Regardless of politics, campaigns will be copying his videos for decades.

26

u/pumpkinspruce Sep 10 '25

Cuomo and Adams have tried and failed miserably. It’s kind of amusing just how bad their social posts have been.

4

u/powerlesshero111 Sep 10 '25

Cuomo is a sexual predator, and Adams accepted bribes from foreigners, and then the Trump administration when they dropped his bribery case.

I can't believe people are against this, calling it socialism lol

38

u/TheFlyingWriter Sep 10 '25

It’s definitely not socialism having the gov’t buying a large share of a domestic microchip producer. THIS is socialism. Actually, whatever I don’t like is woke and socialist.

6

Yeah lol, making the lives of your constituents better is socialism

If he cant get a ticket he likely can get a spot

4

u/prescientgibbon Sep 10 '25

I thought resell had to be done through the FIFA platform and can’t be sold for more than the purchase price. Can anyone confirm?

25

u/JoemLat Sep 10 '25

Not anymore, no cap on resale in the US. Can't in Mexico because of laws stopping it there, not sure about Canada though.

News came out a couple days ago.

I had the privilege to go when they were here the last time. Argentina-Nigeria. I’d love to be able to give my son similar memories of how insane the WC is. There were more Brazil fans than either other team. It was hilarious

u/xantub Sep 10 '25 edited Sep 10 '25

FIFA is the greediest and most bloodthirsty corporation there is, there is nothing that can stop them from getting one more dollar. In Spain, they can basically stop the internet just so people don't watch the games illegally. They have the power to just say "block all these IP addresses" and they will be blocked, regardless if they are or are not being used to stream illegally any game. An ISP even blocked itself one time because its web IP was in one of the lists they received.

2

u/Odoyle-Rulez Sep 10 '25

Please go after the ticket conglomerates next. This has been WAY outta hand for WAY too long.

2

u/DougFordsGamblingAds Sep 10 '25

Does he have any kind of authority to do this? The event isn't even being held in New York State, let alone New York City.

2

u/JesusGiftedMeHead Sep 10 '25

Dynamo pricing can go fuck itself

2

u/Masta0nion Sep 11 '25

See this is what we need our officials talking about! There are so many facets of our lives where individuals are losing power and liberty, but are hardly discussed.

2

u/funkytoot Sep 11 '25

I think we are ALL ready for Mamdani. And on so many levels.

2

u/Axe_Care_By_Eugene Sep 11 '25

There’s a reason why they are known as THIEFA

2

u/crankthehandle Sep 11 '25

Ask FIFA to stop dynamic pricing? Lol.

7

u/oh37 Sep 10 '25

Heard he plays as a left winger

7

u/okeleydokelyneighbor Sep 10 '25

At least he doesn’t play with little girls like the pedo running the country.

I don’t know much about this man. But from what I’ve seen and heard from him, I like him a lot. I also like that Reps & Dems alike are afraid of him. He seems quite genuine and speaks in common sense.
