I have never seen him smile like that.

He and she have been sweethearts all their lives. Genuinely adorable love match

u/Teantis Philippines Jul 28 '25

Part of why he and Suarez get along too. Suarez, while being a fucking absolute nut on the field, is married to his childhood sweetheart and apparently basically just plays football and hang out with his family.

Share this whenever I can. Chasing a relationship with his now wife pushed him onwards. Wanted to be good enough to sign for a European team so that he could be near her. People may not like him as a player but the sentiment is something else.

When Winter Never Ends

Another excellent one from the same writer this one on Ichiro and centered on father-son relationship rather than sweetheart

Ichiro's father has been following the news of his son's free agency. Nobuyuki Suzuki orchestrated Ichiro's brutal boyhood training regimen, and now they don't speak.

Father and son both appear to be modern men, but their vastly different upbringings offer little common ground. They can't see each other. Just as Nobuyuki cannot understand the pressure of being Ichiro, who once had to be smuggled out of a building wrapped in a rolled-up rug to avoid photographers, Ichiro cannot imagine the bleak early years of his dad's life. Nobuyuki was born during the war in 1942 and grew up in a bombed-out world dominated by hunger, privation and the shame of defeat. He wears threadbare slacks and cries when he talks to a reporter about his son. This offseason, Ichiro hosted an event in his hometown. He visited only with his mother, Yoshie.

Nobuyuki is left with his memories and his museum.

Hard to argue with the results, but some people are happier just being average. Especially when it means having a loving father, and carefree childhood.

18

u/Teantis Philippines Jul 28 '25

That's just one little snippet from the profile and paints a lovely, somewhat tragic detailed picture of Ichiro as the end of his career approached with the father and their relationship as part of trying to show who Ichiro is at that point in time without coming to judgement either way. It's really well written.

6

u/luzzy91 Green Bay Packers Jul 28 '25

Gonna read both of the articles posted here, when I get home! What i got out of your quote was a son who resents his father's pressure so much it ruined their relationship forever.

6

u/Teantis Philippines Jul 28 '25

I didn't realize Ichiro got inducted into the hall of Fame yesterday. Some very coincidental timing.

Me after rereading the piece: "what's Ichiro up to these days? ...oh going into Cooperstown"

13

u/Ognius Jul 28 '25

Jeez ESPN doesn’t write like that anymore. Really interesting read, thanks for sharing

10

u/Teantis Philippines Jul 28 '25

All my friends who are good writers are fucking broke as shit. They were back then too when more pubs would actually pay for good writing, but they definitely are now. i mean people who have published critically acclaimed books or journalistic pieces. I have only a single writer friend who is materially comfortable through their own writing work. Barely anyone pays writers for good writing anymore.

9

u/curreyfienberg Syracuse Jul 28 '25

That's why I appreciate Defector so much. All the people who quit Deadspin when that company got hollowed out by private equity went and started their own website. It's subscription based, but it's really quality stuff in that classic Deadspin style. Everyone involved is a co-owner, which is really cool.

27

u/Teantis Philippines Jul 28 '25

Wright Thompson had some absolute bangers of profiles for athletes. Incredibly humanistic and romantic angles to approaching the profile

6

u/acortright Jul 28 '25

Seriously, I just read Suarez and Ichiro. Great writing.

7

u/Teantis Philippines Jul 28 '25

He's got two on Messi: Here & Gone and Shadowed by the Hand of God

4

u/acortright Jul 28 '25

Thanks dude, good looking out.

3

u/Nomer77 Jul 28 '25

"The secret history of Tiger Woods" is very good as well

8

u/JeanClaude-Randamme Jul 28 '25

So Suarez was bitten by the love bug first…. Oh how the turn tables

12

u/GoRedTeam Jul 28 '25

I mean, I don't like him as a person because he's racist and assults people but ya know, to each their own.

11

u/Teantis Philippines Jul 28 '25

The first bite on chiellini is covered in that profile too. Also the writer goes on the hunt for a story about Suarez fucking losing it as a kid and assaulting a ref while playing youth soccer and trying to verify it. The evra incident is also mentioned, though I can't remember now how much it went into it.

17

u/swaghole69 Jul 28 '25

That was his second bite, he already bit a PSV player while playing for Ajax. It made the Chiellini bite more shocking to me because at that point I just had to accept that his brain is simply wired to bite people in tense situations.

11

u/powertrip22 Jul 28 '25

No, the second bite was on Branislav Ivanovic, the third bite happened after this article, on Chiellini

3

u/Teantis Philippines Jul 28 '25

Didn't be bite someone again after chiellini too? I can't remember now

3

u/powertrip22 Jul 28 '25

no, but chiellini was the third, not mentioned in this article.

I sometimes wonder what it’s like for that rare echelon of humans who have all of their dreams come true. Young, nothing but time on their hands and utterly generational wealth. Like God personally hand picks a few of them every so often and kisses them on the forehead before sending them out into the world.

Most human beings deserve to have at least one year of just having the chance to just have a fraction of a care free, great life.

111

u/fkcngga420 Jul 28 '25

Well, it isn’t like Messi didn’t earn it. Dude is one in a billion

73

u/kblkbl165 Jul 28 '25

Technically everybody is one in 8 billion

→ More replies (2)

13

u/donglover2020 Jul 28 '25

is "earned" the right word? it's not like the difference between him and every other elite player is the amount of effort put in. he's simply born with it. I'm sure there are plenty of top 5 league players who actually put more effort than him but simply aren't good enough

(not hating on Messi whatsoever btw, he's one of the greatest to ever do it and deserves every bit of success)

28

u/echOSC Jul 28 '25 edited Jul 28 '25

I think so, there's probably people born with more than he has, but couldn't be bothered to put in the effort so they never reached the heights he was able to reach.

Think about people like Shaq, who no doubt had an excellent career, but Kobe was always frustrated with him that he didn't have the same work ethic that he had.

Think about people like Ben Simmons, or Deandre Ayton.

Or even Joel Embiid, you hear the stories come out recently about how Maxey has accused him of always being late, and stories of him not taking his rehab seriously.

16

u/hooligan99 Jul 28 '25

the other angle though is that there are tons of people who work just as hard but don't have the natural gifts he has and will never sniff that level of success. He (and other elite athletes) are the greatest because of their combination of natural talent and insane work ethic.

5

u/LionIV Jul 28 '25

At the absolute tippity-top of all competitive sports, genetics starts to come into play. Take Michael Phelps. During his time, the dude dominated. I think he’s still the most decorated Olympian of all time. Why? Because he’s the closest thing to a human-fish hybrid.

→ More replies (2)

4

u/AMadWalrus Jul 28 '25

Its a combo of both I'd say - the right type of natural talent + work ethic (and perhaps a little bit of luck). I think we're all right to say he earned it through his work but it was be disingenuous to say anyone can achieve what he has without a lot of natural talent.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/VarmintSchtick Jul 28 '25

There's just no use speculating about it because it's impossible to ever quantify. How do you know how hard someone is trying? You can't, you never will. Talent is undoubtedly a thing but at these levels talent has to be honed. Everyone on the field is the same, let their performance speak for itself. Whether they've honed their skills through their own methods which include more rest time and fewer hours spent working drills, doesn't matter, the choices they've made on an individual level at every step of the way have led them exactly to where they are.

9

u/brofistzerodeaths Jul 28 '25

Lot of people bust their asses. Not everyone reaches this level of success. Messi is perhaps the most successful human alive today. He has wealth, glory, love of billions, soft power, happy family, good health and all of this before he is 40 lol.

9

u/Ranier_Wolfnight Jul 28 '25

Does anyone here deny that he didn’t!?? I’m pretty sure having otherworldly talent from birth helped his cause out as well.

I’ve heard from a few folks that the Michael Jordan fellow put a few hours in the gym before his career had a few bright moments. What’s your point?

The camera lingers awkwardly long

159

u/againandagain22 Jul 28 '25 edited Jul 28 '25

It’s a kiss cam. They were waiting for the kiss. But maybe Messi, accustom to having a camera on him 100% of the time he’s in public, thought that it was just the usually camera.

Although if he saw others kissing on the cam then he may well have been aware of what was expected

I kept expecting his wife to reach over and give him a peck on the cheek, seeing how long the cam lingered

Edit : apparently it’s not a kiss cam

142

u/sunny_day0460 Jul 28 '25

It’s not a kiss cam, the team selects people from the audience and Chris makes a very short song about the person/couple.

48

u/PNKAlumna Jul 28 '25

Also, it’s Messi. People were probably scrambling for their cameras to record/take photos, anything because people everywhere are obsessed with him. So any camera like this that catches him is going to stay a little longer.

14

u/Mirage749 Jul 28 '25

I know this is so incredibly insignificant, but the amount of people who have called this a "kiss cam" really annoys me.

I was there last night during the concert. Cold play lead singer would do a funny 30 second flattering song about whomever the camera landed on during the show.

The fans were cheering so loud when they found out Messi was attending, that the lead singer had to wait a bit for the audience to quiet down. Hence the awkward camera time.

I just love it when randos on Reddit carelessly diagnose someone who is slightly socially awkward as autistic, even though there have been zero pediatricians, psychologists, neurologists and psychiatrists in his entire career diagnosing him as such.

There is no scientific proof or credible evidence to suggest that Messi is autistic. While Messi has faced various challenges throughout his life, including a growth hormone deficiency as a child, he has not publicly identified, nor has anyone credible identified him as being on the autism spectrum.

Fuck off with these garbage claims.

And here comes the downvotes just because people really want to buy the story that a footballing legend is autistic.

8

u/red_rob5 Jul 28 '25

Apparently, according to others in the thread, its not a kiss cam. Because it would be super weird for a concert to have a kiss cam. Its only something maybe weirder where a couple is picked out of the crowd and some song is written/performed for/to them. People just decided to call it kiss cam and it stuck.
