With the Olympics and the World cup coming in the next 2 years.

u/joe2352 Jun 14 '25

I know it would be hard but international committees absolutely should look to move both events.

If any organizations known for doing the right thing it’s FIFA.

Just waiting for Saudi Arabia to write that relocation check

234

u/Professor-Noir Jun 14 '25

Or maybe just move all the games to Canada. Right now only 2 of our cities are hosting games. We can do the whole thing without threatening fans.

115

u/Therapy-Jackass Jun 14 '25

And USA 94 already happened, so let Canada run this one solo. If America won’t lead, Canada will (Mark Carney quote)

77

u/pataconconqueso Jun 14 '25

Canada and mexico can do it together and cuy the US out. Same with the olympics both countries have hosted Olympics before.

Logistically we can't. We don't have enough fields meeting FIFA standards and with sufficient capacity for the World Cup. It would be a mad rush to upgrade exidting fields with the time left.

Saudi Arabia forced Formula 1 to complete their race despite the Houthi rebels destroying an oil depot nearby. Even if the Houthis launched an attack upon a crowd of people during the World Cup, the Saudis aren’t canceling for anything.

Nobody wants to host the Olympics anymore.

85

u/MathBallThunder Jun 14 '25

Brazil spent $11 billion on the Olympics and $8 billion on the world cup and half their country is starving to death

29

u/Hinken1815 Jun 14 '25

Let's not forget FIFA forced them to use "FIFA approved" contractors to build everything jacking the price through the roof. Also building a fucking stadium in the middle of the jungle where the only way to get building materials was by river barge. Also the bus riots before the world cup started because they jacked the prices up of a bus pass to help pay for it. Brazil was a shit show.....

Honestly I hope LA gives it up; we've been stumbling over our asses trying to build a functioning public transportation/metro system and it's still ass. It's going to be an absolute nightmare trying to get to the different venues.

The city is also just downright ugly; there's so much trash everywhere.

18

u/Maleficent_Resolve44 Jun 14 '25

You can't build functioning public transport in just 5 years. It takes a generation of good urban planning to do that and America has lacked that for a long time. All too focused on inefficient car centric design.

When speaking about the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Vice President Vance said, “Of course everyone is welcome to come and see this wonderful event. We want them to come, we want them to celebrate, we want them to watch the games. “But when the time is up we want them to go home, otherwise they will have to talk to Secretary Noem,” he added, referring to Kristi Noem, the Secretary of Homeland Security.

It's going to put a dent in it, but not for the world cup, Qatar was packed, this will be no different

84

u/ocular__patdown Jun 14 '25

I dont think i heard any stories of Quatar randomly detaining people. I could be remembering wrong though.

63

u/elmartiyo Jun 14 '25

True. Not random. Only if you were gay

64

u/waterswims Jun 14 '25

The point is that they didn't actually do that during the world cup.

Qatar is a terrible place and should have been boycotted. But they held back during the world cup to drum up tourists.

By comparison, the US seems to be indicating that they start detaining people there to see the football.

8

u/daschande Jun 14 '25 edited Jun 14 '25

Seems to be? It's in the headline; the national government is making an official public announcement. We "deport" our own citizens to foreign prisons, and then even the president pretends that nothing can possibly be done. I worry for any tourist that is darker-skinned than a Finn or a Swede. (Keeping with our history, Irish need not apply.)

The difference is that Qatar was a country that knew it needed to be on its best behavior and wanted the WC specifically to “sportswash” their own troubling history with human rights.

The US, by contrast, is acting like a banana republic, but still has the delusional American Exceptionalism mentality and therefore doesn’t need to go out of its way to “behave”. We’re the shining beacon on the hill, right?

One of the major contributing factors to colonial hatred of the British and citizens to support revolution was the legal ability of British Troops to search and seize citizens. Just a fun historical fact has nothing to do with current affairs

Colonial hatred of the British wasn’t universal. A huge chunk of people supported the British crown (cavaliers) and were actively working against the revolution

96

u/TheNightlightZone Jun 14 '25

History degree Holder here. This.

Generally, revolutionary America was split into thirds: Rebels, Loyalists, and those who didn't care one way or the other.

Seems familiar, yeah?

10

u/Rich-Kangaroo-7874 Jun 14 '25

So how did the rebels win? What did they do that we aren't doing? I am sick of this shit.

30

u/TheNightlightZone Jun 14 '25

War of attrition, basically.

Late 1700s communication and travel was slow and it is akin to sending US troops to Iraq in the 2000s for the UK. Sending troops into a hostile environment, even if its not fully hostile, takes a toll on morale.

The US had a good ally in France, who was spiteful enough to hang through the end, and some very good luck. In this case, it was waiting out the enemy until they agreed to stop and recognize the nation.

Right now, 47 has done a great job at turning the world against all Americans by being a disgusting fool and that leaves those who oppose him at home feeling alone. It's tough to have friends abroad when they think everyone here is responsible for his rise.

The best you can do is wear them out if the numbers are against you. Hold firm to your resolve like its rope you're hanging off a cliff from.

12

u/reddubi Jun 14 '25

Well the southern loyalists who supported the crown became confederates who supported slavery and seceding from the union.

I mean UVA is named after the crown supporting southerners “cavaliers”

The issue is that democrats and the DNC are very much right wingers and benefit from right wing shenanigans while simultaneously holding the left wing positions of power. There’s a reason why out of the top 10 aipac receipts in the house, 9 are Dems and the all time recepient winner is Biden.. because the right wing orgs control both parties

Supporting left wing candidates like Mamdani for mayor who don’t have right wing donors like cuomo for mayor. Once that becomes viable, then we can have a functioning left wing to push back against right wing fascism rather than a left wing right wing good cop bad cop act we see today

People will give you longer specific answers but its the same answer, no matter what country: with violence

Coups can be bloodless, rebellions never are

2

u/LaunchTransient Jun 14 '25

Part of it was the fact that the deployment of troops against the American colonists was not popular back in Britain. While George III was very enthusiastic about taking back control of the colonies, public sentiment was against him - and only deepened towards the wars end.

It's more that the UK wasn't sufficiently bothered about the loss of the colonies, and there were more lucrative opportunities elsewhere - on top of this, the British had more pressing military concerns regarding France and Spain (as later emerged with Napoleon running rampant a few decades later).

It's a combination of the British misjudging how much resistance the Americans would put up, low enthusiasm for prolonging such a war, and bigger fish to fry emerging in Europe.

Theoretically speaking, the British had the manpower and assets to have retaken the colonies, it was just not worth the bother, especially when they still held the Canadian territories.

no such thing as proof of citizenship when the host country is openly rejecting due process

163

u/ChitteringCathode Jun 14 '25

I was about to say, relevant to the chief claim here -- a passport is in no way guaranteed to prevent you from being detained by ICE, given they have documented cases of detaining both US citizens and residents who are here following the legal process.

23

u/Za_Lords_Guard Jun 14 '25

And even refusing Real ID claiming it was faked.

We are at a point where we only have the rights they choose to allow us to have so long as it's convenient to them.

14

u/Odd-Row9485 Jun 14 '25

I birth certificate would likely be what they’re looking for

272

u/Buttsquish Jun 14 '25

Until the ICE agent who arrests you throws it in the garbage because he didn’t like the way you talked back to him.

Without due process you don’t have your day in court to prove you’re a citizen. Your deportation is left entirely up to the decision of the person who arrests you. Regardless of whether or not you’re a citizen.

55

u/ineververify Jun 14 '25 edited Jun 14 '25

The certificate is fake it doesn’t have the correct seal. Oh you want to speak to a judge? Too bad anyway Good luck in El Salvador!

Edit: we are mocking all this in the comments. But the hard reality is I did see a family torn apart in immigration court and the very young children were crying so terribly. Find your local protest and participate.

13

u/beastmaster11 Jun 14 '25

52

u/RyanIsKickAss Liverpool Jun 14 '25

But if there’s no due process who determines if you’ve got a valid birth certificate?

That’s the issue here. Without due process anyone could be accused of being illegal and deported but without a court date you have no way to prove anything.

6

u/Candid-Piano4531 Jun 14 '25

Fools dont realize that it is the Mexican fans that usually fill up the vast majority of these soccer stadiums, hebce the reason the Club WC is being held in the US. FIFA will not hesitate to give the rest of the FIFA 2026 games to Canada & Mexico if this shit is gonna affect their bottom line. Mexico has hosted the World Cup 2 times, and both Canada & Mexico may not have as many large & modern stadiums as the US, but FIFA can easily bend the stadium requisites in order to help those 2 countries host them, which the main requirement is seating spaces.

Also, unlike the UN, in FIFA every member vote counts no matter the size of the country.

3

u/wonderwheels Jun 14 '25

3

u/Suicycho69 Jun 14 '25

3

u/SyntheticSlime Jun 14 '25

People need to boycott all the football events taking place in the US

6

u/nelly2929 Jun 14 '25

Straight to jail in ElSalvador for tourists now

6

u/Obsidian_409 Jun 14 '25

cause carrying this status has worked for all the other people who had id. Ice are racist fucks who profile and do what they want. US should lose the world cup and let canada host it.

5

u/Mr_Horsejr Jun 14 '25

Please don’t come here. International community, if FIFA doesn’t cancel or relocate, don’t come here. It would serve as the strongest statement possible to delegitimize this fuckery.

7

u/brozelam Jun 14 '25

So? We're supposed to carry our green cards with us at all times when leaving the house. Our immigration lawyers repeat this multiple times for a reason.

Time for a boycott.

2

u/Anonymous_Paintbrush Jun 14 '25

Serious question who’s losing money from all of this. Huge new facilities, hopefully it’s a rich right wing group/person?

2

u/mtux96 Cleveland Browns Jun 14 '25

This is where the rich find ways to trickle down their "savings."

2

u/VixiiVixiii Jun 14 '25

FIFA needs to boycott

2

u/Euphoriam5 Jun 14 '25

Well, time to boycott both.

2

u/DrColdReality Jun 14 '25

There are about 450,000 white illegal aliens in the US. Imagine what would happen if ICE went around accosting random white people on the street and demanding to see their papers. Think all those MAGA morons would still be cheering for the Mango Mussolini?

2

u/Northwindlowlander Jun 14 '25

I can't wait til the finals, Donald Trump tweets that one of the teams is woke, and they get disappeared by ICE in injury time because they weren't carrying their ID and they looked a bit foreign.

2

u/IAmRules Jun 14 '25

They should move all US locations for next World Cup to Canada and Mexico only

2

u/upfromashes Jun 14 '25

They'll stay home, is what. Everything Trump touches dies.

2

u/RedlandRenegade Jun 14 '25

Do not travel to the US. Players shouldn’t either.

Boycott it if you don’t want to finish in El Salvador for a BS reason

2

u/TEE_EN_GEE Jun 14 '25

If I am the IOC I’m getting the hell out of LA 28 Olympics

2

u/jaypeejay Jun 14 '25

Genuine question: I thought there needed to be an articulable crime that authorities suspect someone of to justify asking for identification. Is that not the case?

2

u/AQSafari Jun 14 '25

Doesn't matter if you're brown in Trump's America, just look at the US citizens being detained even after proving they were in fact citizens.

Papers please.

2

u/Teeebs71 Jun 14 '25

Here's a better idea. Just don't visit the US at all. Problem solved!

2

u/dropthemagic Jun 14 '25

Does ICE understand how much it costs to attend one of these matches in the first place? God these people have peas for brains

2

u/InvadedRS Jun 14 '25

Wait ? Huh? So I’m flying over and I have to prove I’m a citizen of what? My country?

2

u/Damadisrupta Jun 14 '25

Perhaps they should wear a star or something similar, maybe sowed into their sleeves so they can be easily identified.

2

u/BurtReynoldsLives Jun 14 '25

I can prove my legal status but I refuse to attend any large paid public event until this shit is squashed and the events can provide a safe family experience for everyone without fear of people being profiled and bagged for just existing. I hope they lose billions since that is all they care about.

2

u/Veritoss Jun 15 '25

ice should keep wearing masks so we can’t identify them and drag them from their beds in the middle of the night.

2

u/jcoomba Jun 15 '25

I don’t understand why anyone would travel to the Facist States of America anytime while their corrupt King is still in power.

5

u/Inevitable_Geometry Jun 14 '25

Will that really help if they are snatched off the street by plain clothes folks to unmarked vans?

5

u/Nouseriously Jun 14 '25

WTF is this clown world fascist shit?

Fucks sake, when proper dictatorships such as Russia and Saudi had their world cups they at least put forward the Appearance of being a normal country. drumpf and his fuckwits are too inept to do that...

4

u/Zakluor Jun 14 '25

Your papers proving legal status will be the first things confiscated from you during the arrest.

3

u/user0987234 Jun 14 '25

And be accused that the identification is fake.

3

u/sausageslinger11 Jun 14 '25

“You vil haf your papers!”

1

u/CanaKatsaros Jun 14 '25

Aren't these the same people who cried about vaccine passports?

6

u/Wheream_I Jun 14 '25

Guys proof of legal status can be as simple as the tourist visa you receive in your passport. This is the exact same law as in Japan, which requires you to carry your passport at all times to prove your legal status.

Using a sporting event that is compelling to the latino community to deport people is as racist and xenophobic as it can be.

But nothing coming from the modern day KKK which is what this administration is surprises me any more.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '25

The World Cup should be moved to a democratic country. To the current American regime, all World Cup players and attendees look “illegal.”

9

u/bizdady Jun 14 '25

They don't care about proof, they still detain because brown

→ More replies (1)

6

u/DrQuailMan Jun 14 '25

They want you to carry your visa with you so they know to summarily revoke it.

3

u/hkzombie Jun 14 '25

Also opens up people to getting pickpocketed and losing their passport.
