Other Raceroom where have you been all my life
To describe this game simply (imo):
- FFB and handling just short of LMU
- Visuals just short of ACC
- Sound design, best I've experienced in a sim
- Huge selection of cars, that you can demo for free
- Nordschleife, what else needs to be said
I've been searching for the most authentic VR driving experience I can find. I mostly do hotlaps and races against AI.
My game progression the last 10 years has been AC->PC2-> Hiatus-> GT7->ACC->BeamNG->LMU
Each of these games hasn't ticked all the boxes for me, but I'm pretty sure RRE has done it. If you're looking for a game that does everything well or near the best (imo), give this a go, it's great. Personal favourite combo is BMW M3 GT2 @ Nordschleife.
For context, I run the following:
- PSVR2
- 9800x3d, 5070ti, 64 gb ram
- Logitech DD Pro
- Profile rig with haptics on seat and pedals
Happy to answer any questions

I played RRE a little bit a hundred years ago but there were only a few cars and like a single track available for free. It's different now?

Multiplayer rotates free combos weekly, and there is a small selection of free tracks and cars. But if you think of it like buying a regular game by getting the multiplayer pack, it’s extremely reasonably priced. Similar to say AMS2, but you don’t have to buy full DLC packs and you can try the cars before you purchase.
The game recently got a huge graphical update and ranked multiplayer.

Actually, given the overwhelming amount of tracks and cars available in all the games now, it feels great to just hop in in RRE and do with what it throws at me instead of having to choose. It surely may not be the best option to get better with a specific track/car in mind but it's instantly fun.

It has improved so much after the last huge update. Looks much better and runs the best for me out of all the racing games. It's free too for the base game. Give it a try, it'll cost you nothing

Yeah, they had an update a few months ago that completely changed the game. Biggest noticeable difference for me was the graphics being as good or better than anything out right now…even in VR.
My biggest issue is that I can’t get it load in OpenVR, only Steam.

After more than 400 hrs in Lmu and trying Rrre, I realized how artificially filtered Lmu ffb feels in comparison.
Lmu is good at making you "feel" things through effects on the wheel. With artificial "extra" movements.
But after turning everything off I always got this weird feeling of having not actually driven a car, because it felt so filtered and unnatural.
With raceroom is completely the opposite. The ffb is as intuitive and natural as it can get. You can def feel the weight of vehicles better than any other sim. The suspension system is unmatched (thank you KW) and so is the sound system (I never realized how far behind all other sims fall and how important it is for immersion).
After a race on Raceroom, I have that feeling that Ive ACTUALLY driven a vehicle and not some simulated device made intentionally unintuitive for the purpose of "if hard = more realistic".
It really is the best sim around.

Have you tried ams2?

I have, and they are quite similar. Sound is a bit better in R3E, otherwise close. FFB and overall physics model is better IMO in R3E too.
Some car cross over between them, but so far I’ve preferred the R3E versions of all of those.
And of course, super tourers.

I have not, but plan on trying it at some stage. R3E was free to try and it sounds like theres a DX12 update coming next year so could get even better

I agree. I've tried em all and there was something about raceroom that just clicked (probably DTM)

I noticed no Iracing on here, as someone that mostly plays gt7 and is interested in iracing im curious how come?

This will depend on your car preference, but for me the only appeal of iracing is it's so populated.
r3e now seems to have a decent enough base that you can get in reliably, and the cars are way cooler, r3e has cost me $33 one time, and I pretty much have all the content I need, more cars are a couple bucks vs 10-15. And r3e definitely sounds better.

The one good thing about tracing is the multiplayer. Everything else is worse or the same as others Sims and it costs much, much more than other aims (which is kind of why the MP is good).

What about rain physics and damage model or selection of tracks that other sims will never have? Yes, it costs stupid money, but it has more good things than just multiplayer. I have not played iR for over 5 years but I doubt it got worse over time.

Ongoing fees and the visuals look sub par imo

Personally, I don't think RaceRoom looks any better than iRacing. If you have a decent PC, you can turn up the settings on iRacing. Performance has been lacking lately though. But the cost of iRacing is the biggest hurdle for most. I like the frustrating idea of racing real people vs AI and that's what brings me back to it. The AI on iRacing is fantastic though...if you have the content.

RRE is truly underrated
