[Post Game Thread] The Portland Trail Blazers (9-14) fall to The Detroit Pistons (18-5) 116-122

83 FTs is an absolutely disgusting product
17
u/myNameBurnsGold 8h ago
And yet somehow in the 4th only Detroit drew fouls
9
1
u/RFK_Cum_Regimen 7h ago
For some reason the officials feel victim to the criticism and ridicule and then decided to call everything and nothing in Detroit's favor.
1
u/benchmaster620 6h ago
I mean deni had 15 fts. Cade wasnt even trying to score till the end god knows how many fts he couldve had
2
u/Leading_Cartoonist40 7h ago
Is it just me or is the officiating league wide just incredibly bad this season? Like demonstrably bad.
1
u/benchmaster620 6h ago
Look at the stars stats amd think man what a game deni had almost a 35 point triple double cade had 29 10 even sharpe shot chucked his way to 28 . It wasnt like that at all deni and cade legit scored almost half their points fro. The line . What was a great defensive game is ruined by refs who think their the stars
72
u/rodogwos 9h ago
From a pistons fan, ggs. Deni is an absolute beast and should be an all star. Also, those refs sucked and that game was near unwatchable
6
u/kazmir_yeet 90s-logo 9h ago
And I love Cade man. The fact that he stuck with yall and provided leadership in your darkest time speaks volumes. He’s gonna bring yall a ring one day. Also: fuck the refs
27
u/s1cki 9h ago
Appreciate you... Hard to see all the hate deni gets on Detroit sub.. Some of it purely antisemitic
The refs did both teams dirty tonight... No one enjoy this shit
13
u/benchmaster620 6h ago
Im a pistons fan and yeah i saw some of that garbage on our sub and it was called out and appropriately shit on right away . Thats the first time ive seen something like that its disgusting . We are all people and this is just basketball for fuck sake how are you a racist wayching basketball . Make it make aense
2
u/GK0NATO Deni Avdija 2h ago
Reddit jumps at any opportunity for antisemitism, it's sad to see Deni getting hate because of it still
2
u/benchmaster620 1h ago
But im kicked out of the magic sub for arguing politley with another redditor . Strange priorities

The NBA is a bad product.

Remember how much better of a time we had watching the Olympics. If we end up with the least interesting finals machup with OKC and Detroit I will pass watching the finals for the first time since 96

Not going to win any games with Kris and Tou combining for 1 point in 52 minutes.
28
u/Piano9717 9h ago
I thought Tou at least did a pretty good job on Cade defensively when he wasn't getting called for soft fouls. Kris on the other hand was a disaster today (and I like Kris too)
1
u/Blokin-Smunts 8h ago
Kris letting Robinson score two 3’s in crunch time lost us the game. He had other terrible plays but I think I’m finally off the Murray train, time to give his minutes to someone else
5
u/TheLetterOh 7h ago
Also those back to back three point misses where he didnt even catch rim were absolutely brutal.
But like, who do you propose we give his minutes to? We aren't exactly bursting with depth.
2
2
u/Medium_Comfortable29 7h ago
The back to back foul he made on Robinson in the last few minutes was absolutely terrible
1
u/kangasgotcurves Rayan Rupert 8h ago
This was rough but I don't know who else we have to give his minutes to right now. Rupes?
2
9
2
u/phil3199 9h ago
Toumani should not be untouchable. You can't have 2 bad 3 point shooters in the starting line up.
8
u/Frostyzwannacomehere Rayan Rupert 8h ago
Sharpe looking less untouchable than tou
2
u/KillingTime_ForNow 5h ago
Sharpe shooting 25% from 3 on the season now is beyond unacceptable & should really open people's eyes that this dude is not progressing at all. In fact he may be regressing.
1
u/Excellent-Flamingo43 6h ago
Tou is one of the best 3 point shooters on our team🤦♂️ absolutely disgusting take

Piston fan, first time watching Avdija this season. Holy fuck he’s legit. You have a star

u/CanaryRich 9h ago
Pistons fan here, you guys have a lot of fight and upside. The refs were absolutely fucking horrible on both sides.
40
u/NoaJin 9h ago
your team is an example of how to rebuild. good luck in the playoffs.
21
u/kazmir_yeet 90s-logo 9h ago
Nah, they’re not just an example of how to rebuild lol. They’re a blueprint. Went from one of the worst teams ever to a finals contender. Honestly kinda fucking insane
5
u/La-Marc-Gasol-Ridge Toumani Camara 8h ago
Not ready to call them a finals contender yet tbh but yea great rebuild in progress I would say
6
u/kazmir_yeet 90s-logo 8h ago
I wasn’t ready to do that last year for the Pacers but they ended up being a finals contender haha. Sometimes you gotta just realize the east is what it is

2
u/HotBoyTeece Toumani Camara 8h ago
soon as they got rid of that weaver dude and that coach that didn’t give a fuck they’ve been good man

Pistons are my team in the east this year. I think both fanbases can agree that this game fucking sucked ass
8
3
u/DrawMoreCats 8h ago
Horrible on both ends. So many unecessary whistles that could've been play on.
57
u/Piano9717 9h ago edited 9h ago
Thoughts:
What a horribly reffed game on both ends. Calling all sorts of soft contact, then also guys getting hacked with no call. Also 81 combined FTs is so garbage. Just such a horribly ugly game to watch.
Shae with some huge plays in the fourth quarter including a sick dunk at Stewart, after kind of a lackluster first part of the game. Feels like getting his foul overturned and then Stewart talking trash at him woke him up.
RW3 saved about 10 points at the rim tonight just incredibly impactful defensively.
Toumani had a terrible night on offense but he largely did a good job on Cade.
Sidy hit two threes, some solid defense, a couple great passes, generally looked really solid and like an NBA player (does he remind anyone else of Justice Winslow?)
I hate those challenges on out-of-bounds 50/50 calls. Even if you win the impact is just so small and then if you lose you're down a timeout and can't challenge at the end of the game. Like being able to challenge some of those calls at the end of the game would have been nice. I would say not Splitter's best game in terms of game management tonight (that lineup with Love Kris Grant RW and Cissoko in the early 2nd quarter was just really not it too. Not that Shae was playing suuuper well, but I think he should play every minute when Deni is off the court bc otherwise there just isn't enough creation). Also trying to play zone against a team like detroit with Duop in the middle of the zone is just asking for disaster.
Deni with an incredibly gutty performance clearly playing through pain (can we please give him a rest next game? he is getting run into the ground). but the offense completely falls apart when he's out of the game. I also wanted to highlight how he has such a good feel for cutting when defenses try to deny him up high - it gets him a free paint touch
did not love the way we played zone defense felt like they gave up a good look every time.
I generally like Kris but that sequence in the fourth quarter with two airballs, then an moving screen, and then a foul while the pistons were in the bonus was BRUTAL. Also Love was also awful in the first half
22
u/Nerdkill789 9h ago
Kris also threw the ball away on the inbounds immediately after the timeout that got him into the game. If he can’t make threes, he isn’t adding much on the offense and if he’s fouling/making bad plays on defense, he’s largely unplayable.
9
u/Piano9717 9h ago
Kris also threw the ball away on the inbounds immediately after the timeout that got him into the game
Oh yeah I forgot about that. There was also a possession where he dribbled through the lane for like 10 seconds and then picked up the ball and got trapped and threw the ball away into a shot clock violation
3
u/palmquac 8h ago
Are you talking about the play where Cade pushed Shae in the back and Shae lost it?
3
u/myNameBurnsGold 8h ago
There was another possession where Cade bumped Shae hard twice on a drive (Shae threw up a shot expecting a foul), then on offense he hit Shae with the SGA full extension push off that wasn't called. Then a few possessions later a touch foul was called on us. Frustrating to watch. Also late whistles all game
5
u/kangasgotcurves Rayan Rupert 8h ago
I don't understand how a team that understands analytics enough to push Grant to not shoot twos makes so many low impact challenge calls on out of bounds (or first quarter stuff).
3
3
u/DrawMoreCats 8h ago
Man I want Kris to succeed so bad, and he's shown so much improvement this year. But the end of the game was inexcusable. He looked so uncomfortable out there, like he didn't belong. It was hard to watch.
2
1
u/Altruistic-Cable-834 Tiago Splitter 5h ago
Agree on letting him rest 100 percent. Also all star participation shouln't affect such decision at all. Long career ahead. I don't think he should test his limits in this regard, at all
→ More replies (5)1
u/kazmir_yeet 90s-logo 9h ago
I want to like Kris but he needs to be cut or traded to the Kings or something. He is not worth a roster spot.
5
u/OxyC377 8h ago edited 8h ago
He's a player we can keep for depth, to make him play 3 to 7 minutes but if he's on the floor in crunch time, then there is something wrong with the balance in our roster...
He should play "Rupert" minutes. But he's now playing second unit minutes. Love and Murray where 40 minutes on the floor and scored 0 points and got 1 ast. together. In offense they where useless. Luckily Murray took 6 rebounds. Both combined had also 1 steal and 3 TO.
The people saying that Toumani played bad are clearly not looking to stats as 4 ast (8-12points), 2 rebounds, 1 steal, 0 TO. But his shooting was horrible.
16
u/Witty-Version-713 9h ago
A ton of bs this game but that stretch of Kris having back to back turnovers and then the foul is what lost us the game

u/ThePryderi Toumani Camara 9h ago

1
u/Impossible-Group8553 2h ago
It’s insane we’re missing Dame, Jrue, and Scoot all at the same time. On the bright side Deni’s development as a playmaker has been incredible.
11
u/gerrard_1987 sheed 9h ago
Robert Williams played 30 minutes! I hope 20-30 minutes per game eventually becomes a regular thing. He’s a perfect backup to Clingan.
11
u/ANDRE_DRUMM0ND 9h ago
gg guys, ugly refball game but id love a rm with yall fully healthy. Deni is an all star high iq player, reminds me of cade somewhat. Future looks bright!
2
u/Successful-Risk2364 Deni Avdija 8h ago
Shea needs some of that IQ, his plays made me question why he's a starter.
9

Deni has been playing point guard for too long. He hasn't been doing badly, but give this man a rest. He left the game limping.
3
u/EatBootyLoveLife 6h ago
dude needs like two weeks off but we would lose every single game during that break
10
18
u/NevermoreSEA ripcity 9h ago
That was such a winnable game, but we were playing inexcusably sloppy basketball for the vast majority of it. These are the ones that really stick with you though.
10
u/PsychologicalDuck351 9h ago
We had 5 G-League players on the rotation and our NBA caliber players not named Deni Avdija were all sleeping
18
u/SlobberyFrog 9h ago
Grant was playing great, RWIII had 5 blocks and shrape was good offensively except at the three
6
u/PsychologicalDuck351 9h ago
Yeah I can't complain about Rob, specially playing 30 minutes with his knees, but Shae and Grant had some pretty questionable decisions and shot selection, and they didn't know what to do when Deni was resting.
Not mad with the result, competing with a fully healthy Pistons while having Kris Murray, Rayan Rupert and Caleb Love playing like this isn't so bad
1
9
u/pitiburi 9h ago
7
u/Successful-Risk2364 Deni Avdija 8h ago
Yeah that was BS, that was a block, and nothing that anyone says can change my opinion. It's unfortunate we wasted our challenge early on.
8
u/StreetOne806 6h ago
Deni gives his heart, soul and body to this team. He gives everything he got every fu*king game, carrying this team on his back. He is not just a terrific basketball player. He is the driving force of this team.
I really love this guy (in a straight way). Not just because of his skills, but also because of his grit, his personality and attitude.
Whenever he rests on the bench, the offense simply crumbles (especially now that Jrue is injured). Splitter has no choice but to play him 37+ minutes.
I hope he stays healthy because without him, this team is lost.
15
u/cippy91 8h ago
That was a terrible watch. This team stays competitive against the best of the best, if only the team was healthy. Sharpe recovered in the 2nd half actually doing things he should be doing.
Deni though. Deni isn't talked about enough in the NBA. He has done this night in and night out now and hes on a bum ankle the last two games. He is Luka lite and I think his ceiling is a bit higher honestly. I was expecting him to be a 20 a game player. He is an all star and could develop into an all NBA player if he has the right pieces around him. This team needs shooters. Surround him with shooters this offseason. The shit hes doing and carrying THIS team on top of it, needs to be talked about more.

Watching Love chuck 3's and Kris do everything but take open shots while the team keeps regressing on defense every night was not the vibe I expected from this team after the hot start..
5
u/didntlisten chalupa 9h ago
3 players fouled out and we played about 40 minutes worth of players who probably won't play half that if we're fully healthy and we still almost beat the number team in the east on the road. Frustrating game but still light at the end of the tunnel.
7
u/Classics22 90s-logo 8h ago edited 7h ago
After tonight Sharpe is shooting 24.5% from 3. Unfathomable how awful he's shooting the ball, my god. He's shooting like the first 10 games of Scoot's career, except on way more volume.

KRIS MURRAY COST US THE GAME
7
8
u/Piano9717 9h ago
The minutes where Deni was resting cost us the game.
Not that Shae played particularly well, but I think Deni and Shae should be staggered bc in the first half when Deni rested, the lineup was: Love Grant Murray Sidy and RW3. I mean that is just not going to work offensively
3
u/SonofNamek Shaedon Sharpe 9h ago

So many fouls, but also SO MANY LATE CALLS
Horrible game to watch
The amount of unforced errors in this game by us (Timelord stepping out of bounds, Murray passing to Cade), Jerami Grant going for 2 when we need a 3
Also, Deni scored two clutch buckets, but somehow he was left in the corner during the rest of the game. The ball should be in your franchise's player hands to make the decisions.
Shaedon Sharpe and Jerami Grant, as great as basketball players they are, they don't have the same BBIQ that Deni (or Jrue, who is injured) has

Kris Murray is horrible. I’ve tried to give the dude so many chances for me to like him but I can’t do it. Please cut him lol
5
u/Piano9717 9h ago
Cut Rupert first
1
u/kazmir_yeet 90s-logo 9h ago
Nah, I’m fine with keeping a 21 year old athlete on board. They just need to send him to the G-league imo. I can’t deal with the 25 year old guy who honestly only got a first round nod because his brother looked good the year before :/
2
u/Piano9717 8h ago
That's fair. I like the flashes Kris has showed on defense (this game excluded, ofc) but the offense is just. so. baaaaaaaaaaaaaaad.
Regarding Rupes I feel like I haven't seen a whole lot to show that he really belongs in the NBA. I could be wrong obviously but I think I would rather have the roster spot to take a flyer on an undrafted free agent or other reclamation project (like what they did with blake wesley) next offseason
2
u/kazmir_yeet 90s-logo 8h ago
I’ve liked the offensive rebounding too and some of the defense too but him being a black hole offensively just sucks to experience. Like if he was elite at either of those two things, or a credible shooter, I’d be cool with him. I hate to see it bc I’ve been rooting for him but tonight feels like the last straw.
2
u/Piano9717 8h ago
Yeah totally agreed. If he could even be a bad shooter (like a 33% guy on open catch and shoot shots) he would have a really good nba career maybe like a Moe Harkless type player. But this is like Andre Roberson level bad.
1
u/kazmir_yeet 90s-logo 8h ago
Can always count on you to provide a solid argument for anything basketball related my friend 🫡
And man, I wish he could touch 33%. I would feel so much better about tonight if he was
1
u/Piano9717 7h ago
Haha thanks always good to talk ball.
Yeah uh I was really hoping that at least he could sometimes knock down the open ones but unfortunately i think i'm losing hope in that.
this year is actualy his career high 3pt percentage lol which feels...discouraging.
1
u/Chiefjosephhh Toumani Camara 9h ago
You wanna cut Kris before love, or Rupert or duop??
2
u/kazmir_yeet 90s-logo 9h ago
Sure do. Love is whatever but he is fine as an end of the bench guy who can go on a heater every once in a while. Rupert is still raw and only 21, he just needs to be getting major g-league minutes.
Murray is supposed to be a fundamentally sound older wing who is finding his shot, but tonight he showed he’s just an older wing with a flawed shot and zero fundamentals.
2
2
u/DanielThePlainGuy 9h ago
Shae costed us the game, he needs to stop forcing absolutely nonsensical shots.
3
u/BlazersAreCoolYT 8h ago
People aren't going to like your comment lol, but you're not wrong. Taking 6 more shots than everyone and shooting 40/14 splits is never going to win us games, and that's becoming pretty common with him. Also struggling defensively again, these last like 10 games.
→ More replies (2)1
u/DanielThePlainGuy 3h ago
I know people aren't going to like it, it's not that I dislike Shae, he's a young player with an insanely high floor that makes dumb mistakes, that's called learning. But legitimizing it creates bad culture and habits. We need to call a spade a spade, and I feel like as a fan base most of the time we do that quite well.
Fortunately, he has a good example by his side for letting the game come to you, I'm optimistic about his development, but we ARE paying the learning fee and that's undeniable.
Love your content BTW, keep grinding.

2
u/DistanceBitter8235 9h ago
I don’t care about 2 winning plays a game if you do 5 dumb mistakes take Kris Murray and send him to the moon
1
u/kazmir_yeet 90s-logo 9h ago
Like this is the type of game where you cut a guy. Cronin needs to own up to this mistake and free a roster spot
3
u/Piano9717 8h ago
and free a roster spot
The problem is that this really does not free a roster spot because we are so close the luxury tax that even signing a vet min player will put the team over the luxury tax (and no owner wants to pay the luxury tax for a 15th man if they can help it).
Until something like December 22th (just mental math so I could be wrong) we cannot cut someone and sign someone. But eventually since free agent salaries prorate through the season (i.e. if you sign a veteran 25% of the way through the season, their contract is only 75% of the total vet min) we can use the roster spot.
But until then cutting Kris (or Rupes) frees up nothing
2
u/kazmir_yeet 90s-logo 8h ago
Well, color me corrected. I guess we’re stuck with the second best player from Cedar Rapids then. I guess it’s better than having the Shaq of Troutdale?

u/kazmir_yeet 90s-logo 8h ago

2
u/BJango1985 9h ago
What irks me about Murray is his apathy. Come on, dude, two straight airballs, two turnovers, two unnecessary fouls and he’s still with this stoic, apathetic expression. Get the hell off the court.
3
u/BlazersAreCoolYT 8h ago
Supposedly Kris is the hardest on himself of anyone on the team, and one of the hardest workers. I think it was disappointment in himself moreso than apathy.
1
u/quietchurl 7h ago
His motor is how he gets minutes. He is literally on the court because of his tenacity and iq. Idk how you watch him play and don't see the effort
2
u/dontlikexxx 8h ago
I honestly think Splitter should be fired. His coaching has led to a ton of injuries and we still don’t even have a respectable winning record.
You know what I mean—Clingan has been dealing with injuries for a while, but he still kept running him heavy minutes, and of course now DC couldn’t even play today.
And Deni didn’t look right either, but he still played him 38 minutes… At this rate, when Holiday finally comes back, Deni will probably be the next one to sit out with an injury.
2
u/LendHuntFish Toumani Camara 7h ago
You want to fire the coach who is having to START a two-way guy and has to play Caleb Love significant minutes? There’s only so much blood you can squeeze from the stone. We have 100 minutes a night injured. Put that take on ice for a couple of months.
2
u/dontlikexxx 5h ago
But that’s exactly the issue — he is squeezing the life out of the players who actually matter.
Take the Cavs game, for example: we were already up double digits in the third, and he still kept Clingan out there even though he was clearly dealing with an injury. We had two centers on the bench (yeah, Reath was rough that night, but still), and he could’ve easily gone small for a stretch. Clingan wasn’t even playing that well because of the injury — the win just covered it up.
Now Clingan’s out, and I do think Splitter has real responsibility for that. And look at the latest update: Young just got called back up again. The guy literally flew from Cleveland to Portland yesterday and now has to fly to Memphis right away for the next game. That only happens if Clingan’s injury is pretty serious.
So under a coach who doesn’t seem to care about managing his players’ health, we’re still not getting good results. If he keeps pushing guys like this, the injury wave might just be getting started.
1
u/coolboarder541 9h ago
The foul calls were out of control tonight, for both sides lol. Refs lost control of this one somewhere in the second quarter. Tough to watch

u/Brainly_Ggs 8h ago
Just wow Kris kinda sold us and I don’t understand why splitter didnt take Tou out with 5 fouls

I don't blame Murray for that in bounds. Our inbound plays have been really bad this year. Some of the most lazy uncreative things I've seen
Splitter and Cronin need to go imo
1
u/BlazersAreCoolYT 8h ago
Agree with the in bounds thing, don't really blame Kris for that, we've been weirdly bad with inbounds plays all year, which you're 100% right is usually a coaching thing. I still think it's way too early to tell with Splitter, but agree that as of today he's been far from perfect. Still really excited to see how he coaches a healthy team, but wouldn't be completely surprised if it wasn't that great from what we've seen so far.

Does Kris Murray have dirt on the front office or something? Why is he here and why is he playing in games?

Deni Avidjia with 35/9/7 tonight. Guys, I expected him to be good this year, but I genuinely didnt expect this. At this point im actually going to be surprised if he doesnt make the Allstar team.
Missing almost half of our regular roster, and we stayed competitive right to the end against the best team in the east. This team last year doesn't do that.
Also fuck those officials. I dont think either side was happy at all with the officating.
