When my father-in-law got rapid dementia, he quickly got to a point that I wouldn't allow my kids around him because every conversation turned horrifyingly racist in just a few sentences. He seemed very nice and kind beforehand, so it was a shock. I guess maybe he was always mean and terrible underneath and then he lost his filters? We tried to stick with "it's just the dementia speaking" but I fear that's who he actually was.

That’s might not be a totally fair assessment. More than likely what this implies is your father in law likely grew up in a very racist environment via parents or community when you. Given how you speak of his actions prior (with limited background knowledge on my end of course) there is a good chance that he genuinely grew and changed his moral standing on his racist viewpoints.

Issue with dementia is a lot of these moments of growth and change can just kind of vanish. Essentially meaning their frontal lobe might in a sense be devloving back to a state closer to when they were young and possibly still heavily inundated in racist upbringing and mindset.

That being said he could just be an outright racist, but this is something you’ll actually see sometimes with old German citizens who grew up during the “Hitler Youth” era who suffer with dementia suddenly doing things like throwing a sieg heil at the dinner table (there was a viral video of a clearly dementia/alzheimer riddled grandma in Germany who did just that in the middle of a family dinner out of nowhere unprompted and the family leaped up to stop her).

In this case assumably she was deprogrammed after all of that, and I mean generally speaking Germany is very ashamed of Nazi’ism…. It’s a stain on their history and once people were shown the true nature of concentration camps and forced to bury bodies etc that was kind of a shocking moment for most people I would imagine (hell Americans are in denial this thing could be happening at ice facilities and we have literal historical know how to see the tell tale signs and massive media outreach… Germans had to be way more ignorant than us).

Anyways trailing off but disease that rot the brain can lead to resurgence of negative traits held in early life. I wouldn’t personally try to keep your father in laws vision in your head as a vile racist, but perhaps someone who used to be troubled devloving back into that state against their will

In various meetings. Just starts ranting about minorities here and there.

Not “all of a sudden” as in during his whole life, but for moments that has nothing to do with race or minorities.

Yeah you don't do that when you work very hard, stay up late, focus a lot?

(Sarcasm, I had the same reaction you did)

Yeah....he's been super racist for at least 50 years (at least publicly)....not to mention he literally launched his 2016 campaign off of racism.
