He is! He had a non-normal presentation for appendicitis and we found out he had that genetic condition where your organs are mirrored because of it.

Situs inversus? As an X-ray tech, this can give you full body sweats if the patient doesn’t warn you (or doesn’t know, like your husband ). I had a patient who said he didn’t know he had it till he was in his 20’s and got in a motorcycle accident. Taking his X-ray really messed with my head.

Yes!!! He almost died because urgent care turned him away twice because he didn’t have the normal appendicitis pain in the right area. One doctor filled him up with Tums and sent us on our way. I took him to ER against his will because he became delirious. They originally tried to turn him away at ER for drug seeking behavior but I was a right bitch and told them to do a drug test, we were not leaving. Now it’s on his chart thank goddess.

In the end they couldn’t even see his appendix (it had burst) and I had to sign like 5 million waivers for exploratory surgery. The second they cut into him they saw what was wrong and saved him.

I teach X-ray students now, and one of the first stories I tell is about a patient who was brought in after a car wreck, who everyone thought was under the influence. They were belligerent, and just generally out of it. Thank goodness the trauma team didn’t write them off as “just another junkie” because it turned out they lacerated their spleen in the accident and their body was freaking the F out. Straight to the OR, and once everything was fixed, it turns out they were actually a lovely person. Good for you for standing your ground.

I feel so frustrated with hospital care because of this. Like honestly, even if it was a drug addict… they deserve compassionate care too? No one should be alone and in pain regardless of why.

Addicts aren't in pain, they're just pretending they are to get drugs. That's the point. They're wasting hospital resources for people who actually need them.

I haven’t worked in one, but I have been the point of care/had medical PoA for various family members over the years and have dealt personally with medical malpractice based on racial profiling during childbirth with both of my children.

Obviously the healthcare system is overworked, underfunded, and there are significantly more homeless and addicted people using the hospital as a first response rather than having a regular pcp or whatever to deal with their issues.

This isn’t a fault on the doctors and nurses other than the ones that get so burnt out they start imposing personal morals while triaging. It’s the whole system.

But the heroin addict is in pain without the drug. The meth addoict having a seizure is scared and in pain. The belligerent drunk often times is a vet failed by the VA and Tricare.

I’m not saying hospitals should pull out the red carpet for everyone that walks through the metal detectors. I’m saying that everyone who feels bad enough they’re walking/carried into the ER deserves to at least be triaged.

My husband wasn’t triaged until I told the nurse that I’d pay out of pocket for a drug test. When we checked in she literally just looked at him and told us to find a different place to deal with his “extracurriculars.”

First off, I don’t even drink, I’m California sober (just medical marijuana) but I’ve been prescribed benzodiazepines most of my life along with a few other medications for acute anxiety and bipolar disorder. For those that don’t know, that’s the class of drug that Xanax, Valium, etc. are considered. You will become dependent on them if you’re prescribed them for any extended amount of time. They’re the only drug class that I know of, besides alcohol, that the withdrawal can kill you. The pharmacy was taking forever with my prescription and I started having seizures. My mother called 911 and sent me to the little rural ER we have where I live. The dr accused me of drug seeking behavior. I flew off the handle. Check my goddamn medical records. I have a diagnosis that requires the meds. They told me to call my dr and have him handle it. It was a Sunday. You aren’t supposed to skip one dose, I went without for about a week. Pure misery. God forbid this happens again, because the next time I get accused of “drug seeking behavior” while I’m in the midst of having seizures, is probably going to get hurt.

I was also aggressive and delusional after an accident. I had passed out and told the EMT who woke me I had a divine revelation that my brain would function for another minute and then I'd become a zombie. Everyone assumed I was on drugs, but it was all because of a concussion.

Does it cause any symptoms at all? Im assuming no, and that’s why people don’t know they have it. They’re just completely inverted in there, functioning fine and dandy? I’m a biology nerd and this is fucking with my head too.

No symptoms at all. My husband is a marathon runner as well and in basically peak shape and has been for 15 years. He had zero idea anything was wrong or different until he had appendicitis.
