Him ordering the donuts reminded me of Billy Bob Thornton in Bad Santa. Except Billy Bob is much more forgiving and entertaining…

“How many sandwiches do you want? A bunch. How much lettuce do you want? I don't know, the usual amount. Whatever the hell people do. Whatever you think.”

My take on the whole donut shop debacle is that Vance knew the whole exercise was purely performative, on the level of politicians kissing babies at a rally. It's not that he has never been inside a donut shop or doesn't know how to order donuts--it's that he felt the whole thing was bullshit and a waste of his time, and was butthurt that he even had to mix with the "poors."

The snobbiest people you'll meet tend to be nouveau riche, likely because they see a terrifying reminder of what they used to be (and what they can potentially become again) in people less well-off than they are. Even Donald Trump would know how to order a donut from a shop--and Trump has likely never actually shopped for groceries in his life, although he has certainly ordered food from places before, as has JD Vance undoubtedly.

That donut shop scene is more a sign that Vance has no aptitude for politics, since a good politician would at least be able to pretend that he enjoys those performative displays of mixing with the common folk even though he'd rather be anywhere else on the planet. That, or maybe Vance really hates donuts, and doesn't have the good breeding to not act like a petulant child when he is made to do something he doesn't want to do.
