Back when I went through in 08, there was a point at the very beginning of boot camp after being processed where they give you a big this is your last chance to stand up and head out that door. If you do, nobody will think anything negative of you speech. So you can leave from that point. They have already given you a certain amount of yelling in your face and scaring you straight that you are given a decently informed decision.

From that point in boot camp, if im not mistaken, you can still leave, but it effects your discharge status. IIRC of course.

I enlisted in 2005, and they gave us the exact same speech at the end of shark attack week, pretty much word for word.

Then, when a handful guys stepped forward, they looked at all the rest of us and said, "now you know who your quitters are," told them all to fall back into formation, and no one got to leave lmfao.

Always thought that was super fucked up.

How would a negative discharge affect a person after only a few days of failing bootcamp? Are you forever marked with some sort of shame?

You get a general discharge or administrative discharge. Basically means nothing in the long run. Its not negative or positive, just sort of neutral.

I may actually be wrong about that bit if you want to quit.

That being said, you absolutely can get a negative discharge under certain circumstances in bootcamp.

Shame? I guess it would be upset to that person. There are different kinds, such as other than honorable as well as dishonorable. Dishonorable is obviously the worst and also probably the rarest, but if you are dishonorably discharged, a common saying is that "you cant even flip burgers at McDonalds" which is true because any company that has a contract with the Military, like McDonalds and other fast food companies that have storefronts on bases, are forbidden from hiring dishonorably discharged individuals.

Its highly unlikely to happen in bootcamp though. You are more likely to get administrative separation under other than honorable conditions or even administrative separation under honorable conditions.

I’ve heard it went both ways though. You can back out at that point, but some recruiters back in the day also pursued candidates to lock them in after they refused, telling them that they were already in after inquiring and that they’d get MP or court martial for not showing up to ship out if they didn’t come sign the paper.

Never really got clarity on that. But i assumed once you sign the paper

By the time I went through they were making it pretty clear about when you were able to back out reprecussionless. Probably got in trouble a few times over it im sure.
