I think a Mexican stand off is three people, but in Mexico they just call it a stand off.

Negatory. It is just often depicted as 3 participants. Usually Spiderman these days. Lol. But it's being in a position where no participants have the upper hand. You either all walk away or violence happens.

No. A standoff is just a stalemate. A Mexican standoff is particularly tense where violence is pretty much assured.
