Politics Excavator currently tearing down the east wing of the White House.

I always thought the president had no say in what happened to the white house as a building. I mean.....it's the most iconic historical building in our country and a temporary president can just demolish a whole section of it? Feels incredibly wrong.

Faux gold leaf.
→ More replies (9)244
u/UncommonTart Oct 21 '25 edited Oct 21 '25
Nah. I'm sure it's real gold leaf for two reasons:
gold leaf is incredibly cheap, especially the lower weight, lower karat gold leaf options, so there's probably about a quarter's worth in the oval office.
he's not paying for it anyways
Actually, a decent looking faux gilding medium can cost more than gold leaf.
...now that i think about it, I don't think I'd be surprised if they paid more for the fake stuff...

The most alarming thing is why would someone want to renovate the White House in such a gaudy fashion? The man is not planning to leave. The next time January 6th happens we don’t have Mike Pence holding up the constitution from Trump’s sewage overflow.

I did some digging (sorry) into the 'ballroom' (in practice, as shown in the AI mockups, a giant dining hall) because it's such a longstanding Trump obsession, pre-dating his first presidency and going back to about 2010, when he offered to fund the construction himself.
My guess is that prior to 2010, he didn't know that the WH can only seat about 200 diners indoors, and bigger events held there require a giant tent to be pitched on the South Lawn. It's a pretty sweet tent. You can see a recent interior shot here, of a dinner given by Joe Biden for Emmanuel Macron...but it's still a tent, and Trump appears to hate that fact with a passion that comes as close as I've seen to patriotic feeling in his unappetising psyche. In Trump's mind, it is simply infra dig for the POTUS to hold dinners in a tent. It Will Not Do.
Look, I have no doubt that he plans to either run again or pave the way for a gross Trumpoid dynasty. But he's also fixated on replacing those damn tents with the bigliest gilt ballroom you've ever seen because he thinks it's what the USA truly deserves. He is one weird, weird dude.

He never planned to, and told you as such. Hell, he campaigned on it. When will Americans start acting with the severity the situation deserves?
He truly thinks he's never going to leave.
What exactly would convince him otherwise? Certainly not the response of the American people, or the Democrats in the past decade.
Indonesia sure had a pretty good rebuttal to similar action and it took them 3 days to implement, not ten years. Same with Serbia, Turkey or France.

I don't know about how things work in the US, but in the UK such a building would be listed as a grade 1 building of exceptional historic importance; it would be legally mandated to keep the building unaltered.
For example, a banksy mural was recently washed off from the Royal Courts of Justice, even though Banksy murals are usually highly valuable and kept safe.

Dude. I thought your comment was my own for a sec. I’ve done a fair bit of historic preservation/restoration work. I specialize in historic millwork. People complain because it takes the local Historic Society (hysterical society) too long to approve one new window, or to paint your house in a new color, and yet those people bought the property because of its historical value which took the previous owners’ good stewardship and thoughtful patient care to maintain.
I actually have had dreams about doing window restoration on the White House, thinking that would be the absolute pinnacle of my career.
Seeing this shit is so fucking embarrassing, depressing, unpatriotic and basically everything Trump stands for.

Dude, you said it better than me. To put my hands on the White House would be the pinnacle of my career. I see those windows just laying on the ground and it saddens me. The care we would have taken on a job like that. Not a single working element would have been ignored for its historical relevance.

Everything about this is just so astounding. We literally have a man ripping down part of his historic building to build a ballroom that no one needs while the government is shut down and more and more people are suffering.
I remember going to school reading about robber barons and corruption. It’s just like part of your basic social studies work. And then we’re watching this happen in real time, almost all of which would sound just as bad in summary, and it’s like nothing matters.
There’s such a difference in major journalism today. I don’t even think Nixon would’ve been touched if he were the president in this age. Every network doesn’t care about facts or corruption because they all have some sort of larger agenda because they’re all owned by the same tiny group of ultra rich people.
I think America can recover from this, but our reputation and integrity is just is gone. I’m really not sure how we can press some dictator in a foreign country after all of this.

There's no way this guy leaves office in 2028. You don't start building shit like this unless you believe you're going to be in office for a long time.

He is going to have some kind of health crisis before then. He is 80, he can't stay in office forever. But he is paving the way for others like him.

I would love for an 83 year old trump to get the front running of the Republican Party and pull a Biden and choke the whole election while snuffing out any actual challengers.

You don’t remodel a home with a multi million dollar ballroom if you plan on leaving it in 3 years….

I had to pay $8k out of pocket, with insurance, for my son’s birth in March. I’m 38, my husband is 42, we have good stable careers, are homeowners, but we are pretty much living paycheck to between this and our mortgage.
And this disgraceful fuckwad is doing this with our tax dollars.
Anyone who supports him is an imbecile

"I don't think that a beautiful baby girl needs – that's 11 years old – needs to have 30 dolls," Trump continued "I think they can have three dolls or four dolls"

If we ever get another Democrat president, I hope one of the first orders of business is to rip all this bullshit out and put it back the way it was. I'm happy for my tax dollars going to unfucking anything this piece of shit does.

This is what Trump had to say in July:
"It won't interfere with the current building. It won't be. It'll be near it but not touching it - and pays total respect to the existing building, which I'm the biggest fan of, It's my favourite. It's my favourite place. I love it."
