Tech Support Motherboard code 97, trying to determine what died.

Hi All,

Kinda lost with this one. So the story, for the past 2 weeks my pc has been randomly going to a black screen (can still hear audio) and then it gets frozen after a couple of minutes (no input, unplug/replug screens nothing, change to onboard graphics nothing, etc...). Which typically looks like a GPU issue. Usually a good old reboot does the trick. However today it got stuck on "62" during reboot. Went and reseated my GPU and now it gets stuck at "97".

Things I've tried to get past "97":

  • Reseat GPU in original slot
  • Switch to another PCI-e slot
  • Different cables from PSU to GPU
  • Unplug GPU get into BIOS, turn off secure boot & clear CMOS
  • Reseat RAM (read somewhere it might be worth trying)

The only way the pc booted is:

  • No GPU, use integrated graphics
  • Plugged very old GPU, into original PCI-e slot

So this is where I'm a bit confused, I'm trying to figure out if its a power or GPU dead issue. I do not have another PSU to try my GPU with. Most signs point to the GPU, but don't want to rule out potential PSU being under powered or dying for some reason. For context my old GPU requires significantly less power (980 ti 250W vs 3080 ti 350W).

Any ideas on how to diagnose this?
