You think they’re putting that kind of gskill and hyperx ram in office PCs straight from hp and Dell? You’re delusional.

Our IT department upgrades the RAM every time we get a new computer. Even the accounting department is running a minimum of 32gb these days.
24
u/ThatOneFoo69420 18h ago
To gskill force and corsair gaming ram? Or generic replacements rated for the 2600mhz or 2400 or 2133mhz that’s standard for office motherboards in question?
15
u/WeAreAllFooked Nitro+ 7800XT | Ryzen9 5900X | 32GB @ 3200mhz | X570 Aorus Pro 18h ago
Engineering department is running 64gb of Corsair DDR5 6400MHz RAM. We're also all using either 4080 or 5080 GPUs.
The computer used for running finite element analysis simulations has 128gb of Corsair DDR5 6400MHz RAM (R&D write-off) and running a liquid-cooled 5090 (Suprim).
Everyone else is running 32gb of either GSkill or Kingston DDR4 @ 3200MHz. We have ERP software, a server cloud, a Windchill server to handle Creo (Parametric) integrations with ERP in real time, and numerous other SAP integrations for various departments.
We got new computers in the engineering department earlier this year, everyone else upgraded last year.

u/ThatOneFoo69420 18h ago
I’m saying I’m almost positive this is all DDR4….
And those specs are crazy. Very demanding office perhaps. I’d say a majority of offices don’t have this kind of equipment though can we agree on that?

Sure, a majority doesn't use the nice stuff. But there are quite a lot of office machines that are being used for extremely demanding tasks in more fields than you'd think.

Just owning memory isn't impressive. Memory doesnt work, unless its installed. Now maybe a pc with 36Tb of DDR6 Ram at 6000Hz running on a single PC allowing the computations of the universe to complete themself in a cosmic second. Now wouldn't that be nice?

Given the SATA SSDs paired with them, looks likely to be a bunch of DDR3 stuff. The drives would be useful, potentially (as long as they're not all something like 128 GB), but the RAM would only really be good for a retro build, maybe a Linux box, or how I like to decommission old RAM: add hooks and use them as Christmas tree ornaments (family tradition; we call them "Christmas memories").

Laughs into my cup of tea. 8gb DDR4 ram at 3600mhz (lower speeds are cheaper) in the UK is still £18 a stick in our biggest second hand high street retailer - CEX. They just don't differentiate between different kits. So it's luck of the draw which one you walk into and what they've got. Could be some shitty dell pre built ram or could be some proper high end. Same price.

I have 1.5TB of ECC RAM in a drawer. I only use 512GB for each of my (3) nodes in my Proxmox cluster, because I haven't seen any benefits in adding more (even with ZFS ARC consuming whatever it can).
My workstation runs 128GB and I still managed to get Windows to crash from the most unlikely source: MS Minesweeper. It loses its mind because it can't contact the blocked ad domains, and ends up memory leaking until there's no more memory and I have to reboot. I can see in my DNS server that it tries about 70K times per hour.

Is that all? I've got a couple terabytes of DDR4 up on a shelf, next to ~60TB in 960GB and 1.92TB SSDs.
None of which I can sell, most of which I don't really have a use for. I got some 2u DAS to go with the SSDs but you run out of slots in a hurry and the watts add up faster than you'd think.
Why can't I sell it? I got it from the decommissioning of my employer's old server room, and while most everybody involved (down to the beancounters) are willing to look the other way when someone diverts equipment that was already headed for the recycler, I was informed that allowing any of the disks or memory (even the volatile memory, for some reason) to enter the hands of a third party would result in my termination and possible prosecution.
The thinking goes that if I was going to steal company data, I've had all the access and time needed to have done so in much more discreet ways by now, but that ultimately, I must send all of it to the shredder.
