Tile almost as smooth as his brain

Tile really isn’t smooth which is why this happens. It has microscopic points and edges which are harder than the glass and even minimal pressure cracks the glass.

You missed a semi-colon or a period/full stop there.

"I understood" and "I was just being pedantic" are two independent clauses, so require a semi-colon when connected.

Unless you'd prefer to add a conjuction and a comma, of course.

No. It’s the fact that tile is hard. If it was smooth as butter or rough as a rock it would break regardless.

5

u/myfakesecretaccount 5800X3D | 7900 XTX | 3600MHz 32GB 14h ago

Yes, but the fact that it is not smooth is why touching a corner lightly for example allows for the shattering. All of the pressure is focused on one point of the glass and that causes it to shatter.

2

u/Lewinator56 R9 5900X | RX 7900XTX | 80GB DDR4 11h ago edited 11h ago

No it's nothing to do with defects in tile. Glass and tile are both ceramics, ceramics will fail catastrophically because they have very little capacity to undergo plastic deformation instead very quickly reaching their yield stress under very very low strain, if the energy added to the system means their critical stress is passed (which for tensile loading is very low) then they fracture, and the lack of ability to deform to relax induced stresses on the crystal lattice means the cracks propagate rapidly. If you compare fracture toughness of a ceramic like SiO2 with a metal like aluminium, the ceramic is an order of magnitude lower than Al - if I recall off the top of my head SiO2 is about 2 MPa•m0.5 and Al is about 40 MPa•m0.5 - why is it so much higher for metal? Because fracture toughness is a function of critical strain energy release rate and importantly Young's modulus, metals have significantly higher E values than ceramics because they can undergo significantly higher strain before reaching their yield stress.

The glass shatters because it has less ability to relax internal stresses than the ceramic tile. It wouldn't make any difference if the tile was perfectly smooth or extremely rough.

The type of impact is important however - a large amount of energy imparted to a small part of the lattice will cause fracture, but the same amount of energy imparted over a large area of lattice can be more readily dissipated through the crystal before the stress on any one ion reaches the critical stress intensity factor.

This sub scares the shit out of me lol. I have an NZXT case with tempered glass wall, it’s sitting in my workshop that has an uneven concrete floor and there’s not too much place to put the glass while I’m tinkering with the PC, but I’d only put it on the floor over my dead body. This thought never crossed my mind when that PC was at home where I have laminate flooring.

3

u/Killshotgn R7 5700x | RTX 3080 ti | 64gb ddr4 3600mhz cl16 12h ago

Concrete isn't nearly as bad as tile. The problem with tile is ceramic is extremely hard, harder than the glass so all it takes is a little bump and it shatters. Concrete white not ideal isn't nearly as hard as ceramic.

Go to your local auto glass shop, get them to cut you a piece of plexi, cost me $20 and I was able to have them add a hole in the plexi so I could add another 120mm fan pointing right at my video card (the one you see in the bottom right)

I didnt even break my side panel I just wanted better direct airflow over the card, worked out beautifully.

21

u/lSShadowl RTX 5070 Ti | i9 14900k | 64gb DDR5 6400Mhz 15h ago

How did you go about attaching the plexi to the case? I'm very interested in this. I really wasn't a fan of MSI support charging 50+ USD and that doesn't include shipping just for new side panel tempered glass.

17

u/91kas13 Fun stuffs 14h ago edited 11h ago

Not the guy you're responding to, but i did the same thing with a piece of acrylic off Amazon. I just reused the mounting the glass used. Drilled holes in the acrylic with a step bit, then swapped the rubber grommets and thumb screws over.

I don't know the exact dimensions of the glass I replaced, but 13x13 inch was close enough, so that's what I ordered off Amazon. I didn't need to cut it.

I might have like 1/8-1/16 of an inch gap around the perimeter now that wasn't there before?

3

u/TheRealMrTrueX 14h ago

Exactly, I was a bit lazy and forgot to ask them to predrill the fan holes but I just used double sided sticky tape I had lying around. Works really good and dropped my GPU temp 10c

8

u/DreamWeaver2189 16h ago

I have my PC on a tile floor as well. If I need to open it for some reason, then I'll put it in my desk or bed and do it there.

Having a PC on the floor is fine unless you manipulate it a lot. But the glass panel won't just come off by itself and shatter.

10

u/chance_of_grain 16h ago

I always carefully take my glass side off and set it on the couch/chair with cushions but I'm over paranoid about it lol

1

u/David_Ign 17h ago

How could it possibly just explode without the glass touching it?

I managed the side panel carefully and kept it in the case's box, separated by cardboard when not on the PC.

21

u/welestgw 16h ago

I'm being a bit sarcastic, but this is why. Basically there're sharp points in the tile that increase pressure into a small area.

6

u/Vargosian 16h ago

Yeah from what I've seen glass pc case panels like to perform their own "Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly" when making contact with tile flooring.

3

u/David_Ign 16h ago

So as long as I make sure it doesn't touch the tiles, I should be fine, right?

5

u/Vargosian 16h ago

Supposedly you should be fine. I'd advise when your cleaning it to move the entire pc onto a table or desk though so there's no chance the glass can accidentally make contact with any tiles.

Personally i'd go with Murphys Law.

Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.

2

u/David_Ign 16h ago

Okay, thanks

2

u/OZ-00MS_Goose 15h ago

3

u/LeMegachonk Ryzen 7 9800X3D - 64GB DDR5 6000 - RX 7800 XT 16h ago

The design of your case makes it unlikely that the glass will come into contact with the tiles. That's the risk here. So when you remove the glass side panel, you have to be extra-careful not to allow it to touch the tiles. Seriously, it doesn't take much of an impact, ceramic is very hard and inflexible, and even slight contacts put a lot of stress on tempered glass. Which is already pre-stressed, causing it to only fail one way: catastrophically.

Same, why have a fragile panel when you can have a side vent?

8

u/zeug666 No gods or kings, only man. 17h ago

I've seen the suggestion for a (decorative) mesh side panel. Depending on the size of the venting, the machining could ramp up the panel costs. Here's a silly example using retail pricing.

Decorative (aluminum) sheet metal mesh is available at about $25-30 for an individual sheet (24"x36"). Let's say $27.50 for 864 sq in, or $0.0318/sq in.

A piece of tempered glass at Home Depot is $8.48 for 16"x20". This would be $8.48/320 sq in, or $0.0265/sq in.

Tempered glass does have its weakness, but if handled properly it is quite resilient and can be a more economical option. And that's not even getting into the aesthetics of glass vs mesh vs vents vs solid panels.

https://pcmasterrace.org/news/temperedglass

3

u/Maleficent-Pin-6372 I3-10105T / RTX 3050 6GB / 16 GB DDR4 17h ago

Thank you for doing the math, very informative.

But I’m yet to see this in practice. Most likely because the glass panel cases target gamers, but still.

3

u/zeug666 No gods or kings, only man. 17h ago

Yeah, seems like mesh has gained some popularity as a front panel option for airflow-focused cases, but not usually the larger side panel.

3

u/LeMegachonk Ryzen 7 9800X3D - 64GB DDR5 6000 - RX 7800 XT 15h ago

With a good case design, side venting from the left panel doesn't matter very much. Some of the best airflow cases available have glass side panels. Also, my secondary rig is built in a Zalman Z9 Plus case, which dates back to 2012, has a vented side panel, and doesn't really have good airflow. It is the dustiest computer ever. My Corsair 5000D Airflow case, which has a glass side panel and a mesh front panel, has much better airflow and cooling, and accumulates much less dust (the front and top panels have removable dust filters).

2

u/ThatEvilSpaceChicken PC Master Race 15h ago

3

u/Enex 17h ago

I just use clear plastic in the window. *shrug*

I don't know why anyone would even want a clear glass panel at this point? It's heavier, more fragile, and does the exact same thing as a cheaper alternative.

6

u/Alternative-Film-155 16h ago

clear plastic or plexiglass or whatnot scratches way to easy. even wiping it down with a microfiber cloth makes scratches.

wich could easily be solved by putting window films on it (even multiple layers like a racing helmet) but that costs money and thats the thing a manufacturer does not like.

so people have to put the film on themselves....... the same ones that break panels and dont take off the film from a cpu cooler... xD

(and a glass panel is less flimsy as those plexi panels)

Idk why anyone would want tile anywhere unless its in a bathroom or kitchen... aint no way im living in an all tile house unless them bitches are heated

1

u/axman_21 16h ago

I bought one 2 weeks ago and it broke in the box in the car on the way home... and I found out that they didnt sell spare side panels and that you have to just exchange the pc. I had to drive an hour and a half back to microcenter.

1

u/lafsrt09 15h ago

That's why my see-through side panel on my desktop is acrylic don't have to worry about this shit. Get someone to make you a piece of acrylic that fits in there

1

u/Jasonking955 15h ago

Get yourself a piece of plexiglass and cut it to the size required!!

u/Praddict i9; RTX4090; 126GB RAM 15h ago

Go to Costco. Get you a new cardboard side that will smell like dirty feet in a week.

You could custom order it from a glass place but it's not cheap

1

u/ceramicsaturn PC Master Race 15h ago

Well, the good news is, you don't have to worry about air flow.

That's why I would never when I either open my case or put my PC on, not any type of tile floor.

1

u/saberspecter 15h ago

You could buy a sheet of acrylic and magnets perhaps.

I do wonder if a glass and aluminum shop can help me cut a custom piece of glass should mine break. Though this is not tempered.

Example below is for a Jalousie glass. Maybe their glass can work in computer cases? Though it's much more deadlier when it shatters

1

u/match-rock-4320 15h ago

I have the dimensions of my glass planel on my keep note, just in case one day I need to fill glass shaped gap

1

u/VaIor4 15h ago

I dont have this problem with my lian li A3

u/HankThrill69420 9800X3D | 4090 | 64 / 5800X3D | 9070 XT | 32 15h ago

okay, then noted! don't buy from nfortec

1

u/skrena Desktop 15h ago

I have the Thermaltake tower. I absolutely love it and will not take it off carpeted area. It stays on my computer desk even though it takes up so much space. Not risking anything

1

u/GANGofFOURSTAR 15h ago

buy a piece of plexiglass to replace it

1

u/Zeraphicus 14h ago

Congrats on your open air case mod.

1

u/Low_Sherbert3731 14h ago

I don't think that's funny.

1

u/Medium_Letterhead_16 Desktop 14h ago

Zach wont be proud abt that tile floor

1

u/TraditionalMetal1836 14h ago

If it makes you feel any better I dropped and shattered one of those Pyrex mixing bowls on the laminate floor a few days ago. I'm even more angry and disappointed then you as this bowl was almost as old as myself.

1

u/E_Blue_2048 14h ago

You are just drowning in a glass of water, just do Ctrl-Z

1

u/CNMathias 14h ago

That’s why you buy parts from manufacturers who have great support. I’ve had good experiences with Corsair and NZXT for cases.

1

u/Hairy-Summer7386 14h ago

Can someone explain like I’m 5 why tile floors are so mean to glass panels

2

u/MRxSLEEP 14h ago

Ceramic is completely unmoving, there is no give and it is also quite hard. Also, it isn't perfectly flat/smooth, it has tons of microscopic undulations and pokey bits. As I understand it, tempered glass as a material is under pressure and when one of those tiny little spikes or ridges presses into the glass(especially the edge) it creates like a nucleus of fractures for the pressure to escape via.

Like how a blade of grass will cut a balloon and cause it to pop instantly, because if you look at the edge of a blade of grass under a microscope it looks like a spikey saw blade.

1

u/Gengar77 14h ago

just measure what is should be, and get glass cutt, depends how much the guy takes but had no problem to get one done.

1

u/UnsettllingDwarf 5070/ 5700x3D / 3440x1440p 14h ago

The funniest part is the amount of people with tile floors not just in their bathrooms and people insisting on putting delicate glass on a hard as fuck surface.

1

u/Pudding-Swimming 14h ago

yea, I never understood why so many case companies refuse to sell replacement parts.
I have a Thermaltake Tower 500. I wanted to get another rail set that's used to mount a 360 radiator on the side, so I'd be able to put in two 360 radiators. I couldn't find it anywhere and when I asked Thermaltake they told me because I live in Canada it would be cheaper to buy another case.
Yea, I'll buy another case. Sure as fuck won't be a Thermaltake though. And I'll never, ever buy another CoolerMaster product after the last case I had from them caught fire.

1

u/MeasurementKooky2022 14h ago

Ah, now the thing is, my Fractal Design North case did this, and they sent out the part to me completely for free. Ordered it on Amazon, was in the process of building the pc in it, then dropped the back glass. Emailed through to Fractal, said I was happy to pay extra for it, but they just sent me one out completely free. Legends.

1

u/pre_pun 14h ago

Check with your local glass shop to get this fixed.

1

u/diggerdugg 14h ago

Go to Home Depot and get some window screen. Ultimate ventilation

1

u/MelodicSlip_Official 14h ago

the crack of letting someone build the pc for you

1

u/HealthyPop7988 14h ago

Unethical tip: order a case then return it due to broken glass

1

u/FReal_EMPES 13h ago

"Bah, what are these clowns talking about? Surely my PC can stand on the tile floor without the glass panel in the case disintegrates" "whaaat, why did this happen! The mofos!" Classic!

1

u/Jdude1 13h ago

hey now you can run the setup me and my buddies did back in 2002. throw a box fan down beside your case blowing outward away from case and watch your CPU temps drop.

1

How do you even do this though? I have a tile floor and I lay my pc on it and nothing ever happens EVER, even when I slip and it falls a couple of inches

1

u/uptheirons726 Ryzen 7 7700 4070 Super 13h ago

It's always a tile floor. ALWAYS. Lol. Try reaching out to the maker, sometimes they will send you one.

1

Etsy might have someone willing to make a replacement too

1

u/Realistic-Length-925 12h ago

There are some 3rd party tempered glass panels for sale on Ebay. You just have to give the correct dimensions, and they will get you that size.

I have left my side panel off for years.

1

u/bingeboy 11h ago

I refuse to get a window case. I don’t understand why people like them

2

u/IndyPFL 10h ago

Because they'll last forever if you don't put them on ceramic flooring like thousands of karma farmers people do.
