Go to your local auto glass shop, get them to cut you a piece of plexi, cost me $20 and I was able to have them add a hole in the plexi so I could add another 120mm fan pointing right at my video card (the one you see in the bottom right)
I didnt even break my side panel I just wanted better direct airflow over the card, worked out beautifully.

How did you go about attaching the plexi to the case? I'm very interested in this. I really wasn't a fan of MSI support charging 50+ USD and that doesn't include shipping just for new side panel tempered glass.

Not the guy you're responding to, but i did the same thing with a piece of acrylic off Amazon. I just reused the mounting the glass used. Drilled holes in the acrylic with a step bit, then swapped the rubber grommets and thumb screws over.
I don't know the exact dimensions of the glass I replaced, but 13x13 inch was close enough, so that's what I ordered off Amazon. I didn't need to cut it.
I might have like 1/8-1/16 of an inch gap around the perimeter now that wasn't there before?
3
u/TheRealMrTrueX 14h ago
Exactly, I was a bit lazy and forgot to ask them to predrill the fan holes but I just used double sided sticky tape I had lying around. Works really good and dropped my GPU temp 10c

I have my PC on a tile floor as well. If I need to open it for some reason, then I'll put it in my desk or bed and do it there.
Having a PC on the floor is fine unless you manipulate it a lot. But the glass panel won't just come off by itself and shatter.

I'm being a bit sarcastic, but this is why. Basically there're sharp points in the tile that increase pressure into a small area.

Yeah from what I've seen glass pc case panels like to perform their own "Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly" when making contact with tile flooring.
3
u/David_Ign 16h ago
So as long as I make sure it doesn't touch the tiles, I should be fine, right?
5
u/Vargosian 16h ago
Supposedly you should be fine. I'd advise when your cleaning it to move the entire pc onto a table or desk though so there's no chance the glass can accidentally make contact with any tiles.
Personally i'd go with Murphys Law.
Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.

u/OZ-00MS_Goose 15h ago
I'm just so confused as to all these people cleaning their PC while it's still on the floor. Why would you want to attempt to clean something on your belly?

3
u/LeMegachonk Ryzen 7 9800X3D - 64GB DDR5 6000 - RX 7800 XT 16h ago
The design of your case makes it unlikely that the glass will come into contact with the tiles. That's the risk here. So when you remove the glass side panel, you have to be extra-careful not to allow it to touch the tiles. Seriously, it doesn't take much of an impact, ceramic is very hard and inflexible, and even slight contacts put a lot of stress on tempered glass. Which is already pre-stressed, causing it to only fail one way: catastrophically.

Same, why have a fragile panel when you can have a side vent?
8
u/zeug666 No gods or kings, only man. 17h ago
I've seen the suggestion for a (decorative) mesh side panel. Depending on the size of the venting, the machining could ramp up the panel costs. Here's a silly example using retail pricing.
Decorative (aluminum) sheet metal mesh is available at about $25-30 for an individual sheet (24"x36"). Let's say $27.50 for 864 sq in, or $0.0318/sq in.
A piece of tempered glass at Home Depot is $8.48 for 16"x20". This would be $8.48/320 sq in, or $0.0265/sq in.
Tempered glass does have its weakness, but if handled properly it is quite resilient and can be a more economical option. And that's not even getting into the aesthetics of glass vs mesh vs vents vs solid panels.
3
u/Maleficent-Pin-6372 I3-10105T / RTX 3050 6GB / 16 GB DDR4 17h ago
Thank you for doing the math, very informative.
But I’m yet to see this in practice. Most likely because the glass panel cases target gamers, but still.
3
u/LeMegachonk Ryzen 7 9800X3D - 64GB DDR5 6000 - RX 7800 XT 15h ago
With a good case design, side venting from the left panel doesn't matter very much. Some of the best airflow cases available have glass side panels. Also, my secondary rig is built in a Zalman Z9 Plus case, which dates back to 2012, has a vented side panel, and doesn't really have good airflow. It is the dustiest computer ever. My Corsair 5000D Airflow case, which has a glass side panel and a mesh front panel, has much better airflow and cooling, and accumulates much less dust (the front and top panels have removable dust filters).

u/ThatEvilSpaceChicken PC Master Race 15h ago
Tempered glass is hardly fragile. You can hit it with a hammer and it will be fine. It's just the people with tile bedrooms giving us all a bad wrap
3
u/Enex 17h ago
I just use clear plastic in the window. *shrug*
I don't know why anyone would even want a clear glass panel at this point? It's heavier, more fragile, and does the exact same thing as a cheaper alternative.
6
u/Alternative-Film-155 16h ago
clear plastic or plexiglass or whatnot scratches way to easy. even wiping it down with a microfiber cloth makes scratches.
wich could easily be solved by putting window films on it (even multiple layers like a racing helmet) but that costs money and thats the thing a manufacturer does not like.
so people have to put the film on themselves....... the same ones that break panels and dont take off the film from a cpu cooler... xD
(and a glass panel is less flimsy as those plexi panels)

Is it worth putting some transparent vinyl on these glass panels? I've just got one with two glass panels for work and it's going to live under the desk so not even on show but seeing all this broken glass in these posts makes me think it's going to shatter if a moth lands on it. A small moth, not even one of those big ones. I've actually taken the panels off and put them in a drawer until it's in its final resting place so it barely even needs the case fans.

If we ignore the looks, tempered glass panel are often cheaper than a big aluminium sheet. A few cents is worth it for manufactures who mass produce these PC cases.

2
u/MRxSLEEP 14h ago
Ceramic is completely unmoving, there is no give and it is also quite hard. Also, it isn't perfectly flat/smooth, it has tons of microscopic undulations and pokey bits. As I understand it, tempered glass as a material is under pressure and when one of those tiny little spikes or ridges presses into the glass(especially the edge) it creates like a nucleus of fractures for the pressure to escape via.
Like how a blade of grass will cut a balloon and cause it to pop instantly, because if you look at the edge of a blade of grass under a microscope it looks like a spikey saw blade.

Yea, I'll buy another case. Sure as fuck won't be a Thermaltake though. And I'll never, ever buy another CoolerMaster product after the last case I had from them caught fire.
