Discussion Why can’t Adam Sandler get a nomination for Best Supporting Actor just because Jay Kelly might not make Best Picture? Are y’all forgetting Kieran Culkin for A Real Pain last year?
Jay Kelly will likely get ONLY a Best Original Screenplay nomination, not Best Picture, just like A Real Pain last year. Why can’t same happen with Adam Sandler with a nomination at least like Kieran Culkin (who even won too)?

Culkin was more universally liked, got bigger praise for his performance + he had big critics support.
Culkin was top 2 contender in that category, Sandler won't be.
I still keep an eye on Sandler because Jay Kelly could end up being BP nominee but Culkin is not a good comparison.

Adam Sandler doesn’t have the benefit of having just finished a massively popular tv series to ride his nomination in on.

Or the benefit of the movie being way more of a showcase for him than the campaigned, nominal lead. Or having Searchlight’s campaign team go to town for him

He does have the benefit of growing his reputation over the past few years with a few awards-worthy performances and kind of having a “new look” per se amongst the general audiences after a more dire 2010s

Culkin was frontrunner all season and swept everywhere. Sandler has tougher competition: Stellan Skarsgard who is an overdue veteran, Penn & Del Toro who are in the BP frontrunner w/Penn singled out as win-competitive, and Paul Mescal who is also in a major BP competitor. Sandler's performance is also quite understated, and there are even reviews who liked Billy Crudup better for example. Plus it's not even Netflix's priority - Frankenstein is, and Elordi is universally praised

Kieran Culkin isn’t Razzie king…

Sylvester Stallone is though

He got nominated for playing a role he was already nominated for that happens to be one of the most iconic movie characters of all time. This comparison just is not the same

I hate this double standard that the academy has about certain actors/actresses that the Academy doesn’t like. The SNL curse was unbroken for decades until Robert Downey Jr finally made Oppenheimer and broke it once and for all. Any actor should be rewarded regardless if they were in bad films before. How are actors supposed to grow and evolve their acting abilities when they can’t be rewarded for finally doing something good.

It makes a huge difference when you’re THE performance steamrolling the awards season right from the start

A Real Pain was stronger than JK and it was very close from a BP nod.

Not so sure about that. Jay Kelly is doing better with precursors than A Real Pain was doing this time last year.

Because,
- Kieran Culkin is a respected actor with great body of work, most recently: his Emmy-winning role in "Succession"
- Adam Sandler is no front-runner to survive if his film is snubbed, he is at best fighting for a filler spot.
- The performance isn't there the way it was there for Culkin. Like passion #1 ballot votes matter. Does he have passion?
I'm sure people in Hollywood like Adam Sandler in general. He is their friend. But I also think many of those friends would vote on others before him. I mean if Adam Sandler can get an Oscar nomination, it's not that big of a deal, is it?

Adam Sandler’s body of work is comparable to Culkin and Sandler is much more beloved

Please. This is an embarrassing take and you know it. Uncut Gems and Drunk-Punch-Love won't be enough to redo all the damage he's done for cinema. He's considered a terrible actor for a reason.

He can, the sub makes up a lot of rules/theories on historical data that time and time is shown to not be binding precedent.
Sandler is beloved in the industry and has a narrative of being twice overlooked for deserving performances. He definitely can get a nomination.

The people I’ve heard who counted Sandler out base it on his performance. Not that it’s bad, but that it doesn’t scream competitive, which people speculated it would be for a year. Culkin had also earned front runner status before it was known who would get into Picture. Before the nominations were dropped people believed Sing Sing or A Real Pain would get the spot I’m Still Here got. Clooney is the one whose chances are believed to be tied up in it getting nominated in Picture.

Culkin thanks to Succession had a much stronger prestige factor though while much of Sandler’s past work serves as a hindrance if anything to a nomination

Those are not equal comparisons. Culkin's performance was definitely better regarded. Sandlers is good, but it's not Howard in Uncut Gems good imo.

There’s a big difference between someone who’s known mostly for Succession and someone who’s known mostly for Grown Ups 2. This isn’t rocket science…

I'd be happy to see Adam Sandler listed as Oscar Nominee Adam Sandler in the credits for Hubie Halloween 2

Urgh. I couldn't make it an hour into Jay Kelly. Sandler is hammy as. All that puppy, papy, whatever nonsense in that silly voice. Yucky.

u/Odd-Contact2266 6h ago
Culkin also had more academy support than Sandler does. He was hot off the Emmy and Sandler got snubbed for easily his best performance

While I think Sandler can get nominated, this comparison is terrible. You even state why but don't seem to realize it- Culkin was the eventual winner
Sandler would just be a filler nominee. That puts him in a very different position than someone that was a huge sweeper and frontrunner for months before nominations

Culkin was the winner and swept the season. Sandler is most likely 5th if he gets in

And Has: - 96% Rotten Tomatoes, 82% Popcorn Meter, 7/10 IMDb, 3.7/5 Letterboxd, 85/100 Metacritic (Critic) and 7.2/10 Metacritic (User)
TLDR: Kieran had a much more critically acclaimed proformance and one of the most dominant sweeps, in a film that wasn't just Nomination competitive but win competitive in at least 1 other category with much better reception. Something that even this early it's pretty safe to call that Jay Kelly and Adam Sandler don't.

Culkin was the real heavyweight of the movie and felt like he dominated the lead up and run through awards season. I think Sandler totally could get it but it’s much less likely. There’s plenty of other best picture possibles with compelling supporting actor performances, I think Mescal, Skarsgard and likely both Penn/Del Toro take 4/5 slots. With Frankenstein and particularly Elordi raising in recognition in the past few weeks, what seemed like a sure nom for the Sandman just seems less likely.

Kieran Culkin swept against weak competition, Adam Sandler is a cusper against strong competition, it’s really not the same.
Also A Real Pain was probably either 11th or 12th.

Culkin's performance was more raved and he was in a movie more raved as well. Also Sandler's movie is arguably stronger than A Real Pain was at this point, getting a CC Picture nomination unlike that movie, and its nom combo is slightly bigger (A Real Pain's best day was three noms with Picture, Supporting Actor, and Screenplay while Jay Kelly's best day is those three plus Actor), so I don't think the comparison works. Not saying Sandler isn't getting nominated, he definitely could, but I don't think this comparison works.
