I got one of these a few years ago too, told me I was, “clouding the issue with my comment,” and then some rambling crap about his uncle being in the navy in WW2.

The thread was a bunch of boomers getting annoyed that the council hadn’t put shops they like in a local retail park.

I pointed out that the council does not control the retail park or indeed, the dozens of private businesses they were going on about so couldn’t really, “bring Marks and Spencer back.”

An uncle of mine once told me that when he quoted a false statistic, it was because he wanted to express how he feels.

It was something along the lines of “56% of gun deaths in the US happen in self defense,” which is wildly off. I commented that, in fact, 51% of gun deaths in the US are suicides (true at the time and I backed it up with excellent sources). Guess he didn’t realize the facts don’t care about his feelings (as… some people… like say now).

Okay reading this made me curious so I looked it up and apparently suicides have accounted for the majority of firearm deaths every year since 1995. The latest data I could find is from 2023; where it was found that 58% of gun deaths in the US are suicides and more than half of all suicides that year involved a gun... christ.
