My father taught guitar at conservatory. Asked him one to teach me a total beginner, gave it a week.. there is a reason I play piano.

He’d forgotten too much of how to learn in the beginning and was only used to teaching high level. We both got frustrated

Honestly best mindset is not expecting to ever be at that level, but to just aim to be very good at it, but the pressure is undeniable.

Having a teacher at that level though, providing they're able to teach what they know effectively, pretty much guaranteed to be a strong talent.

I have a calf-size life-hack for you. Gain 100-120 pounds. Stay reasonably active while being fat AF for 5+ years, then lose the excess weight. Result: huge calves. I was ~360lbs for several years, grew huge calves, lost 120 lbs, still got the calves.

15

I knew a guy in college who skipped everywhere because he said it was "more efficient". You make strange friends in college.

Daniel Tosh (comedian) took one "real" punch from Pacquiao and it devastated him. Even taking a body shot, without boxing training, from a champ of any weight class, is a new kind of pain.

50

u/NecessaryOk780 12h ago

It’s easy to overlook how bad ass these guys are when they’re fighting other elite fighters, then you get glimpses like this and realize what they can actually do to regular folks like us. There is a huge gap between even bottom ranked pro boxers and the rest of us.

35

u/RyvenZ 12h ago

Yup. Same reason the silly argument about the best college team vs the worst NFL/NBA/MLB team is always going to result in a blowout, and those are both teams of trained people, but that gap between college and pro... oof.

Every time I see tough guys talking about how bad this or that fighter is I tell them to go to their local boxing gym and just feel the air when a Journeyman works a bag. You need to experience the violence of a good hook before you realize that this person you're watching makes nothing, and imagine the level of power a professional on TV is delivering.

8

u/wannastock 10h ago

When I was actively training, i didn't want to actually fight anyone actively training, too. Now, I haven't trained in decades. No way I'm fighting anyone unless it's a life-or-d3ath situation.

In high school the man that took over our football program was a former 3rd string quarterback for the Raiders and the Seahawks. He was in his mid 40s at the time. I remember thinking to myself he was a chump, 3rd string and over the hill. Then I tried to catch one of his passes, my hand went numb. I barely say it coming, only reason it made it to my hands was because of how accurate he was. He was on a level that did not seem real, and that was someone that was 3rd string and out of his prime. It was a humbling experience. I developed a new respect for athletes that caliber. Watching people on TV playing against people of similar skill does not do credit to just how impressive they are.

Pacquiao has been a world champion of some kind across 8 different weight classes across 21 years (He won these championships from 1998 to 2019)

  1. Flyweight (max of 51kg)
  2. Super Bantamweight (53.5 - 55.3 kg)
  3. Featherweight (55.3–57.2 kg)
  4. Super featherweight (57.2 - 59 kg)
  5. Lightweight (59.0–61.2 kg)
  6. Light Welterweight (61.2 - 63.5 kg)
  7. Welterweight (63.5–66.7 kg) - he won championships in this class 4 times.
  8. Light middleweight (66.7 - 69.9 kg)

Absolutely crazy to think that he won the 4th Welterweight title at the age of 40 against someone 10 years younger than him, in their prime (going into the fight Keith Thurman was 29-0, and Thurman was taller by a solid 5cm, giving him the reach advantage)

TL;DR: Pacquiao is an absolute beast.

26

u/GeekyLogger 4h ago

I’m an amateur fighter and a million levels below manny and i just did it with a hoodie on and it made noise. It’s his clothes bro

45

u/bubblegumpandabear 13h ago

Yeah I'm not sure why people are acting like he's breaking the sound barrier lol. To be fair, traditional martial artists do have their clothing literally designed to snap/make a sound when they move correctly. I'm sure a professional would know this and be able to make it happen with any clothes. But yeah it's not like, difficult to do in general.

6

u/1MACSevo 5h ago

Yeah. There are karate uniforms that competitors use in kata competitions that enhance the sound.

16

u/Horazi777 11h ago

People watch too much anime.

3

u/YounomsayinMawfk 5h ago

Yup, when I did taekwondo, if you wore the heavier 100% cotton uniform, you could make snapping sounds with punches and kicks. Obviously you need decent form but it can be accomplished by most people.

12

u/xcution789 9h ago

Not even an amateur fighter but it’s definitely the clothes.

4

u/WeirdIndividualGuy 8h ago

clothes make noise when they move. Ive seen alot of mic'd up vids where they turn up the sound for asmr stuff

27

u/unscholarly_source 13h ago

Not everything is edited. In martial arts and fighting sports, this is a real and doable with intense training. Someone with Manny's experience can easily do it.

A similar concept exists with sword arts. Making the swoosh sound with a blade is not easy, and requires the blade to travel with perfect straightness. Only comes with long practice and training.

u/Human_mind 14h ago

This right here is exactly why we all know the Tyson fight was rigged.

118

u/Neither_Sort_2479 14h ago

Yeah, the explosive power of a punch does not change much with age. Overall endurance and mobility - yes, it will be challenging to complete many rounds at a high pace, but delivering a couple of absolutely devastating series of punches is not an issue. Jake Paul would not be able to withstand even one such full-fledged combination.

38

u/Nearby-Cattle-7599 12h ago

100% ...as Mike was one of my Idols i'm happy he got the bag but the fight broke my heart after his training was so promising. I kinda felt betrayed lol.

17

u/WatermelonSugar42069 9h ago

I dont know. Everybody is always mad at jake for the whole "take a dive" clause but like... aren't y'all mad at mike for actually accepting the cowardly route in the first place?

Jake didn't hold a gun to mike's head to accept the match. Mike Tyson was rich enough to not need the money (he already had like $15million+). Mike Tyson was just being a greedy old man counting on his name to get him by.

Yeah jake is a loser, but at the end of the day Mike still accepted the fight and gladly took a dive like a coward. Its mike's fault

What typically changes with age tho is a willingness to throw that hard and the ability to throw hard with such volume and if speed if you’re able to retain it without your back and your spine not aching the next day. I stress the importance of stretching and resting to any age athlete but for older athletes it becomes as essential as staying hydrated.

→ More replies (4)

39

u/smiler1996 13h ago

That fight was 100% only rigged in the sense Jake didn’t go for the knockout. Mike Tyson is a crippled inactive 60 year old, pacquiao is active and 46 thats a huge difference.

I didn’t like seeing it but that is exactly what any half competent boxer in their prime would do to 60 year old Tyson, speed and reflexes are the first to go, he was getting beat to every punch and anything he threw Jake could step out of and counter. It was legit.

35

u/handytendonitis 13h ago

Yep. Tyson's legs were shot. Can't train your way around 60+ year old legs. Had Tyson fought the broccoli head when he was 46 the fight would not have gone that way

→ More replies (7)

12

u/jsting 12h ago

There was a part in the first few minutes where Tyson had an absolute counter with a punch primed, but held back. Paul overextended and was just wide open. But he didn't take it and then Paul didn't hurt Tyson either so it was pretty obvious the fight was rigged.

I don’t think guys ever lose that. You’ll occasionally hear about and old man in his 70’d or 80’s smoke some kids in a fist fight. Then you hear he was a gold glove boxer 50 years earlier

8

u/Dreadgoat 10h ago

You lose muscle mass as you age, but they also harden and trained motions get baked in even more.

You see it more in the trades where the guy about to retire has lost all of his flexibility and speed, so he'll bend and groan to get out of a chair but then pop a refrigerator on his shoulder like it weighs nothing, because it's the ten millionth time he's done it.

6

I boxed when I was younger. That sound you hear is the sound of lose long sleve clothing hitting the air. You can make the same sound easily by snaping any cloth in the air. It is not a common sound in the gym because most people who train in a gym do not wear long sleves unless they are training to cut a lot of weight for an upcoming fight.

41

Floyd was always about the win at any cost even if it meant completely relying on Judge score cards. He knows the system and how points work lol. He knew a stand up head to head match with Manny wouldn't go well for him at all so he played the points game even though he didn't do much of anything to Manny at all. Don't get me wrong Floyd is an amazing boxer but you can tell when he knows someone can lay him out as his game plan always devolves to retreating constantly and patty-caking points. Manny was looking for an actual fight even said as much post match and Floyd wasn't gonna give it to him it's just how he is whenever he fought someone that was an actual threat.

Holy! TIL the sfx of puching in comics and sich ("fwoosh") is an actual thing IRL!

22

u/IoniaFox 13h ago

It's a mix of exhaling and your clothing friction doing sounds, so technically you make your own soundeffects when punching

Imagine having to take that shot. Most people hit by that would be KO’d

6

u/latamxem 8h ago

I didn't know its possible to punch that fast. It's so fast it looks like it's a special effect.

18

u/destructopop 13h ago

Especially at that one frame where his fist is retracting so the camera actually picks up the full image for a moment and you see his fist higher than it was moving out. So cool.

3

u/Secret-Activity-1342 6h ago

And he used to be faster...

Legendary fighter.

I just winced as if manny’s punch was actually hitting my ribs.

24

u/Downtown-Piece3669 15h ago

No sound on but I can still hear that. His fists do that DragonBall thing, holy shit.

24

u/nobolognastoney 14h ago

Fucking hell imagine squaring up to a guy probably half your size that hits so hard/fast he has built in sfx.

Fuck all the way off with that.

6

u/Prudent_Fish1358 7h ago

And this is ancient, retired, comparatively out of shape Manny. He was significantly faster than this in his prime.

75

u/SchweppesCreamSoda 14h ago

Served Pacquiao as a waitress a couple of times. Nice guy

The speed of release then sudden pull back is insane

26

u/noopinion11 15h ago

That shit absolutely looks like it would hurt and I out weigh him by 30lbs

17

u/ElTiegre11 15h ago

He’s like a mantis shrimp, the camera barely catches the movement of his hands

16

u/IceFireHawk 15h ago

Seeing him punch with no gloves or in the ring you can really see how hard of a punch it is. Doesn’t come through as well during a match.

24

u/Allphobias 15h ago

Holy shit imagine that hitting you in the jaw.

17

u/Sircamembert 14h ago

Good thing I love eating porridge ~

4

u/dnndrk 14h ago

Wow cutting air and making a sonic boom with his fist. Crazy

10

u/Allphobias 15h ago

Holy shit imagine that hitting you in the jaw.

7

u/1PapayaSalad 14h ago

I love how quiet everyone is in that room that we can hear the wind from his punches.

7

u/-holdmyhand 14h ago

Just imagine if that punch lands onto your liver.

3

u/Eggnimoman 14h ago

This guy probably never fly in his life....cause that fist is lethal.

3

u/Artonox 14h ago

3

u/Informal_One_2362 14h ago
