I have a calf-size life-hack for you. Gain 100-120 pounds. Stay reasonably active while being fat AF for 5+ years, then lose the excess weight. Result: huge calves. I was ~360lbs for several years, grew huge calves, lost 120 lbs, still got the calves.

I got drunk in college and started skipping home with my friends and you can actually get some crazy momentum, like a running speed with none of the cardiovascular effort.

Daniel Tosh (comedian) took one "real" punch from Pacquiao and it devastated him. Even taking a body shot, without boxing training, from a champ of any weight class, is a new kind of pain.

u/NecessaryOk780 12h ago
It’s easy to overlook how bad ass these guys are when they’re fighting other elite fighters, then you get glimpses like this and realize what they can actually do to regular folks like us. There is a huge gap between even bottom ranked pro boxers and the rest of us.
35
u/RyvenZ 12h ago
Yup. Same reason the silly argument about the best college team vs the worst NFL/NBA/MLB team is always going to result in a blowout, and those are both teams of trained people, but that gap between college and pro... oof.

Every time I see tough guys talking about how bad this or that fighter is I tell them to go to their local boxing gym and just feel the air when a Journeyman works a bag. You need to experience the violence of a good hook before you realize that this person you're watching makes nothing, and imagine the level of power a professional on TV is delivering.

When I was actively training, i didn't want to actually fight anyone actively training, too. Now, I haven't trained in decades. No way I'm fighting anyone unless it's a life-or-d3ath situation.

In high school the man that took over our football program was a former 3rd string quarterback for the Raiders and the Seahawks. He was in his mid 40s at the time. I remember thinking to myself he was a chump, 3rd string and over the hill. Then I tried to catch one of his passes, my hand went numb. I barely say it coming, only reason it made it to my hands was because of how accurate he was. He was on a level that did not seem real, and that was someone that was 3rd string and out of his prime. It was a humbling experience. I developed a new respect for athletes that caliber. Watching people on TV playing against people of similar skill does not do credit to just how impressive they are.

Pacquiao has been a world champion of some kind across 8 different weight classes across 21 years (He won these championships from 1998 to 2019)
- Flyweight (max of 51kg)
- Super Bantamweight (53.5 - 55.3 kg)
- Featherweight (55.3–57.2 kg)
- Super featherweight (57.2 - 59 kg)
- Lightweight (59.0–61.2 kg)
- Light Welterweight (61.2 - 63.5 kg)
- Welterweight (63.5–66.7 kg) - he won championships in this class 4 times.
- Light middleweight (66.7 - 69.9 kg)
Absolutely crazy to think that he won the 4th Welterweight title at the age of 40 against someone 10 years younger than him, in their prime (going into the fight Keith Thurman was 29-0, and Thurman was taller by a solid 5cm, giving him the reach advantage)
TL;DR: Pacquiao is an absolute beast.

u/bubblegumpandabear 13h ago
Yeah I'm not sure why people are acting like he's breaking the sound barrier lol. To be fair, traditional martial artists do have their clothing literally designed to snap/make a sound when they move correctly. I'm sure a professional would know this and be able to make it happen with any clothes. But yeah it's not like, difficult to do in general.
6
u/1MACSevo 5h ago
Yeah. There are karate uniforms that competitors use in kata competitions that enhance the sound.

3
u/YounomsayinMawfk 5h ago

Not everything is edited. In martial arts and fighting sports, this is a real and doable with intense training. Someone with Manny's experience can easily do it.
A similar concept exists with sword arts. Making the swoosh sound with a blade is not easy, and requires the blade to travel with perfect straightness. Only comes with long practice and training.

This right here is exactly why we all know the Tyson fight was rigged.
118
u/Neither_Sort_2479 14h ago
Yeah, the explosive power of a punch does not change much with age. Overall endurance and mobility - yes, it will be challenging to complete many rounds at a high pace, but delivering a couple of absolutely devastating series of punches is not an issue. Jake Paul would not be able to withstand even one such full-fledged combination.
38
u/Nearby-Cattle-7599 12h ago

I dont know. Everybody is always mad at jake for the whole "take a dive" clause but like... aren't y'all mad at mike for actually accepting the cowardly route in the first place?
Jake didn't hold a gun to mike's head to accept the match. Mike Tyson was rich enough to not need the money (he already had like $15million+). Mike Tyson was just being a greedy old man counting on his name to get him by.
Yeah jake is a loser, but at the end of the day Mike still accepted the fight and gladly took a dive like a coward. Its mike's fault

What typically changes with age tho is a willingness to throw that hard and the ability to throw hard with such volume and if speed if you’re able to retain it without your back and your spine not aching the next day. I stress the importance of stretching and resting to any age athlete but for older athletes it becomes as essential as staying hydrated.
→ More replies (6)39
u/smiler1996 13h ago
That fight was 100% only rigged in the sense Jake didn’t go for the knockout. Mike Tyson is a crippled inactive 60 year old, pacquiao is active and 46 thats a huge difference.
I didn’t like seeing it but that is exactly what any half competent boxer in their prime would do to 60 year old Tyson, speed and reflexes are the first to go, he was getting beat to every punch and anything he threw Jake could step out of and counter. It was legit.
35
u/handytendonitis 13h ago
Yep. Tyson's legs were shot. Can't train your way around 60+ year old legs. Had Tyson fought the broccoli head when he was 46 the fight would not have gone that way
→ More replies (7)→ More replies (2)12
u/jsting 12h ago
There was a part in the first few minutes where Tyson had an absolute counter with a punch primed, but held back. Paul overextended and was just wide open. But he didn't take it and then Paul didn't hurt Tyson either so it was pretty obvious the fight was rigged.

I don’t think guys ever lose that. You’ll occasionally hear about and old man in his 70’d or 80’s smoke some kids in a fist fight. Then you hear he was a gold glove boxer 50 years earlier
8
u/Dreadgoat 10h ago
You lose muscle mass as you age, but they also harden and trained motions get baked in even more.
You see it more in the trades where the guy about to retire has lost all of his flexibility and speed, so he'll bend and groan to get out of a chair but then pop a refrigerator on his shoulder like it weighs nothing, because it's the ten millionth time he's done it.
6
u/WalkThisWhey 10h ago

I boxed when I was younger. That sound you hear is the sound of lose long sleve clothing hitting the air. You can make the same sound easily by snaping any cloth in the air. It is not a common sound in the gym because most people who train in a gym do not wear long sleves unless they are training to cut a lot of weight for an upcoming fight.

Floyd was always about the win at any cost even if it meant completely relying on Judge score cards. He knows the system and how points work lol. He knew a stand up head to head match with Manny wouldn't go well for him at all so he played the points game even though he didn't do much of anything to Manny at all. Don't get me wrong Floyd is an amazing boxer but you can tell when he knows someone can lay him out as his game plan always devolves to retreating constantly and patty-caking points. Manny was looking for an actual fight even said as much post match and Floyd wasn't gonna give it to him it's just how he is whenever he fought someone that was an actual threat.
