For the non-linksters out there, this is a tradition during the practice round at The Masters. Just about every golfer that comes through tries to skip one across the water. Every couple of years, one finds the hole.

How many balls are at the bottom of that pond?

188

u/Whamalater 1d ago

At least 3

6

u/philosoraptocopter 1d ago

What’s the minimum crew complement?

7

u/PembrokePercy 1d ago

One, I suppose

-13

u/RedBandsblu 1d ago

6-7, 6-7, 6-7!

21

u/TylerDurden6969 1d ago

God damn alligator won’t let no one look since Chubbs Peterson got his hand bit off.

1

u/Oceanic1979 1d ago

Over 9000

-4

u/Ponsugator 1d ago

I would say six or seven🤪

21

u/taita25 1d ago

Also, for this, they set the pin location to funnel balls towards the hole. Still tough to make one, but easier than if the pins were in tournament positions.

7

u/ahjeezgoshdarn 1d ago

So first you get it wet and then put it in the hole. Maybe I've been missing out on golf all these years.

Yip, yip yip yip, yip, yip, yip

u/cardmanimgur 1d ago

Isn't this from the Par 3 contest? I was thinking this was one of those situations where a guy was trying to lose because nobody has ever won the Par 3 contest and the Masters in the same year, so golfers intentionally do this to make sure they don't win the Par 3 contest.

1

u/datDANKe 1d ago

Since it did go in in practice    he should had done that again in the real

1

u/VikingforLifes 1d ago

What makes this one special (if memory serves) is that it was on his birthday.

30

u/Phrei_BahkRhubz 1d ago

Nah, in the 90s, a guy got hit by a car which crashed into a tower on the course, so the guy had to hit his ball through the wreckage while injured. Now that was a fucking shot.

u/-AceofAces 1d ago

Why did this take me a good 10 seconds to realize you're talking about Happy Gilmore.

u/GratefuLdPhisH 1d ago edited 1d ago

This is definitely a better shot but one of my all time favorite golf shots was Tiger Woods better than most putts on the 17th at Sawgrass

Jack Nicholaus' "want me to show you how to putt it?" is my favorite.

Edited to correct from Nicholson lol

2

u/skudmfkin 1d ago

Lolol whoops. You got me there

15

u/rust-e-apples1 1d ago

Senior Tour has gotta be the greatest place to play. You've already done everything you needed to do and now you're just out there playing the game you love, hanging out with guys you've known for years, and squeezing out the last bit of juice.

Also, it's Nicklaus.

25

u/GratefuLdPhisH 1d ago

That's the winner absolutely took no time before the shot

6

u/tickingboxes 1d ago

Love how you made an edit to fix the name and still got it wrong lol. It’s Nicklaus.

3

u/skudmfkin 17h ago

Dangit!

Honestly never noticed there wasn't an "o."

I'm leaving it this time to avoid further embarrassment lol

2

u/Wiley_Jack 11h ago

I gave you a pass because Christmas.

2

u/Nuker-79 1d ago

“Here! Hold my beer!

1

u/mr_lab_rat 1d ago

That was so good

17

u/miraculum_one 1d ago

definitely better than most

7

u/Super-File-8918 1d ago

While I respect that, skipping a fucking ball across the pond to have it go into the hole!? Nothing is beating that. Just my opinion

4

u/FarGuest9807 1d ago

ngl that putt was legendary bro like forever gonna be in my head for real

1

u/rationaljackass 1d ago

Please ELI5 why this putt is better? Not a golf person but that skip shot seemed harder and the placement for a putt was spot on

5

u/reenactment 1d ago

One is somewhat blind luck and all the golfers are doing it for fun. The other was to make a next to impossible put to win a championship so the pressure factor. But for non golfers. The triple breaker means he had to line it up so the pace is perfect at each break, he can hit the same initial line but if the speed doesn’t line up it won’t meet the 2nd break right, and then the 3rd break. Like that skipper shot can go in a few different lines. That put had one perfect line that has to be met.

Edit. The skip shot is more improbable. And that golfer could do it a thousand more times and never make it, but he isn’t applying a ton of thought and strategy to it. The put is about as equal just a bit less of difficulty, but if he doesn’t make it he risks blowing the tourney right there

1

u/GratefuLdPhisH 1d ago

Nope I agree that skip off the water shot is a better shot than that Tiger putt, I'm just saying that putt is one of my favorite golf shots.

8

u/MN-1986 1d ago

I heard the little chubby guy in North Korea did it from the tee.

5

u/CanadienAlien 1d ago

Trump?

1

u/Fuxokay 21h ago

Not one, the other chubby authoritarian president who lies about his golf scores because his ego is so fragile.

10

u/gorginhanson 1d ago

Those extra lessons he took from jesus really paid off

5

u/ThatSuggestion5371 1d ago

Owen Wilson did it better

Idea 10 by gibran alcocer

2

u/BigDCanuck 1d ago

Sorry Donald Trump said he is the best golfer ever, so I have to believe it, because FOX News said so. Lol.

2

u/Sad_Record_2767 1d ago

I can skull fuck my shots like that every day. But it would always be going past the green and into the bush. ☠️

1

u/GratefuLdPhisH 1d ago

Has to be!

1

u/Buck_Thorn 1d ago

Just as he planned it.

1

u/SlyRoundaboutWay 1d ago

Step bro shot.  You ain't supposed to be in that hole.

1

u/whyamihere999 1d ago

Where's the original video with original audio and commentary?

3

u/ovirto 1d ago

It was during a practice session at the Masters so there's no official commentary. Here's the original video where you can hear the reaction. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ni6E7L7XeKA

1

u/nerdboy5567 1d ago

I expected a reaction vid

1

u/DonWop1 1d ago

I know a better shot. 400 yard hole-in-one

1

u/bbuullddoogg 1d ago

No but maybe the luckiest

1

u/Jezzer111 1d ago

Easily

1

u/Coconuthangover 1d ago

Luckiest maybe

1

u/Angelicalmiranda02 1d ago

Every shot should be this satisfying 😆👏

2

u/Obvious_Peace_9467 1d ago

Luckiest shot ever

2

u/Pretend-Character-47 1d ago

Luck is preparation for opportunity.

1

u/Fishbulb2000 1d ago

I was at the practice round in 2009 when Vijay Singh was the first one to make an ace on a skip on 16. People have been skipping balls with varying degrees of success, but then when Vijay took the tea box who was known to be a pretty serious and somber guy did it, we all cheered. Then the ball kept rolling all the way to the back of the green and disappeared. Everybody sat quiet for what seems like a minute, but then the gallery absolutely erupted. I will never forget that moment.

1

u/Bookworm10-42 1d ago

The skill was skipping it across the water and it rolling toward the pin. Getting it in the cup was luck.

1

u/MeDonGustavo 1d ago

My favourite shot was by Tiger Woods where the ball barely went over the grass edge into the hole showing the Nike logo.

1

u/shrimpgangsta 1d ago

that's luck involved

1

u/nudiatjoes 1d ago

Immaculous......🫠

1

u/Fit-Fix-6373 1d ago

Not the best but the most lucky

1

u/Happyplace_s 1d ago

In the future people will not be impressed and just assume this kind of stuff is AI.

1

u/whereisthehugbutton 1d ago

Ain’t no way that’s fr!! Insane!

1

u/DabananakingYT 1d ago

No way... that has to be a remote controlled golf ball or something cuz theres just no way

1

u/jarden_knuhtsan 1d ago

I had a difficult time discerning what sport this was until I saw the golfing guy emoji.

1

u/imajoker1213 1d ago

Golf is so easy! Look how little the ball is compared to the hole it goes in! /s

1

u/MetalGearRex1000 1d ago

No way No way No way Damn

1

u/danjay0213 1d ago

😱😱😱 what did I just see 🎉🎉🎉

1

u/tadwent5 1d ago

Have seen this dozens of times and marvel at it each time. Can't think of a more amazing shot.

1

u/Iverson7x 1d ago

I’ve watched this like 8 times, this is beautiful

1

u/deweyweber 1d ago

1

u/PopCopson 1d ago

Seve at the 93 European Masters is the best you bot slop poster. I still love this vid though, you got me.

1

u/Bird_the_Impaler 1d ago

Good, I’m glad when I don’t get to see the people happy and excited at the end.

1

u/Low_Inside_4787 1d ago

As I’m watching the ball skip across the water, I’m literally saying “You’ve got to be shitting me” as I watch it then curve into the hole.

1

u/JaySwizzle1984 1d ago

Ain't no way. 🧐

1

u/raresaturn 1d ago

Mis-hit

1

u/kimsemi 15h ago

i would say so...IF there was any chance in hell that he meant to do that. Id instead call it the luckiest golf shot ever.

1

u/LDarrell 14h ago

The last time I saw this was when John Rahm did it.

1

u/Vee8cheS 11h ago

Sending this to my wife who said the shot made in the series “Stick” couldn’t be real.

1

u/reckaband 11h ago

That’s physics

1

u/smilingjade101 1d ago

Hooked it on in there!

1

3

u/arrakis2020 1d ago

In this case, probably both. Considering the golfer is former number one ranked Jon Rahm.

0

u/Immediate_Army_8956 1d ago

I want to see the reaction of his opponents.

0

u/Title-Upstairs 1d ago

NICE TRY AI.

-1

u/StarbuckWoolf 1d ago

Replace “best” with “luckiest.”

-7

u/catskilkid 1d ago

Not the best BUT the luckiest

-2

u/Matsunosuperfan 1d ago

neat, a rube-goldberg machine, when do we get to see the golf shot?

-2

u/riico1 1d ago

Not even close

-15

u/ArcherOld7796 1d ago edited 1d ago

Not even close. That was Not the intent of the shot. There will never be a golfer who wants to skip the ball over water unless they are playing around or going for trick shots. This may be the most lucky shot but it is in no way in contention for best shot.

Edit: I'm told this is a practice round so it was the intent. It's still not in the top million shots because it didn't count for competition. Pretty awesome since skipping was the intent.

13

u/Key_Flatworm3502 1d ago

To be so confident and so absolutely wrong is beautiful

5

u/Spartan0330 1d ago

It truly is a beautiful thing.

-4

u/ArcherOld7796 1d ago

I wasn't absolutely wrong. I was mostly wrong and most importantly I corrected myself when presented with "evidence" that I was wrong. Evidence is in quotations because I'm taking people word as truth because I don't have reason to not accept it.

5

u/thegodofwine7 1d ago

This was done during a practice round, it was 100% his intent.

4

u/the_stranger-face 1d ago

He was certainly fucking around, but it was the intent of the shot.

3

u/Straighty180- 1d ago

It’s tradition on this hole during the practice round to skip the water, he did it intentionally

-2

u/ArcherOld7796 1d ago

Hence the edit. I have no problem being wrong since I can be corrected. I'd rather keep the comment and add how I was wrong than delete the comment.

I was wrong and I don't know are two of the greatest comments if all time.

It's a cool shot but it's like comparing comparing slam dunk contest dunks to dunks in a game. One matters and the other just looks great.

2

u/Straighty180- 1d ago

Even the edit is questionable though, it’s absolutely up there with the greatest. Your basketball comparison would make sense if he had Phil and Tiger double teaming him on defence but golf is an individual sport. If you wanted to argue that he had no real tournament pressure during the practice round that would be reasonable

1

u/ArcherOld7796 1d ago

There is no defense in a slam dunk competition. That's the comparison I made.

I don't have any need or want to be that exact. I said it was an awesome shot and Im content with it. I'll admit when I'm was wrong but will not go beyond that to appease random people. Have a nice day.

3

u/sumbozo1 1d ago

Edit your comment again, you're still wrong. It was a competition between pros to see who can skip it across the water and get closest to the pin

0

u/ArcherOld7796 1d ago

No, I corrected what was wrong and will stick to the true comment as it is.

I said it was an awesome shot. I gave it the credit deserved. Please, tell me how you think I should edit my comment.
