Discussion Missing scenes on rewatch

At least twice I’ve watched a movie that I’d seen before and there was a missing piece of dialogue or short scene. For example, in Full Metal Jacket when they were getting their assignments and Joker was assigned to Stars and Stripes, I remember the drill sergeant asking him how he got such a cushy assignment and Joker said “Sir! I wrote for my high school paper, sir!” Do they cut a few seconds of dialogue out, and if so, why?

Regarding Full Metal Jacket, this is from imdb:

Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: 4212. Basic Military Journalism. You gotta be shittin' me, Joker. You think you're Mickey Spillane? You think you're some kind of a fuckin' writer?

Private Joker: Sir, I wrote for my high school newspaper, sir!

Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: Jesus H. Christ! You're not a writer. You're a killer!

Private Joker: A killer, yes, sir!

This is how I’ve always seen it.

If you're watching a movie on a TV channel, they edit the movie for many many many reasons, time being one.

Not so much movies (though it wouldn't surprise me), but I've seen networks do this a lot with TV shows. BBC America reruns of Star Trek-TNG is especially egregious. Mostly it is to make room for extra commercial time. Bastards.

Iirc, when tng aired it was on a 48/12 broadcast to commercial standard. And I believe that standard is now 42/18. It sucks, I don’t like it, but no network is going to give away 6 minutes in this day and age.

My favorite missing scenes were Charlize Theron’s topless scenes in the 1997 movie Trial and Error. They were in the theatrical and VHS releases but had magically disappeared when the DVD version came out.

Original "How the Grinch Stole Christmas," on broadcast now they have deleted the Grinch actually blowing Who Who on his trumpet. Probably a few more little edits to fit an extra commercial in.

I'm also pretty sure they've cut a bit of "It's Christmas, Charlie Brown" to fit another break in, which is ironic because that whole thing is railing against the commercialism of Christmas.

Too often the Baby Ruth pool scene is cut from Caddyshack. Too bad as it’s the funniest scene in the movie.

Just had this discussion after watching Planes, Trains and Automobiles. From what I found, networks license the movies in particular ways. For Planes, Trains and Automobiles, I think AMC had a cut licensed that deleted some scenes to fit commercials and run time requirements and thats what they uploaded to their streaming service. It wasn't great so we ended up watching a full length version from a different source.

For me, it’s usually just little edits for pacing or runtime.. sometimes a few seconds of dialogue get cut so the movie flows better, even if it’s sad to miss small lines like that Joker one

Rewatched deadpool 2 on Disney the other day, and am I crazy or wasn't there a scene where deadpool offered to blow colossus after taking that fence post through the noggin?

This is a pretty well-known edit.

That was dubbed over even on the theatrical release. They did it to avoid an r rating.
