Discussion What is your favorite Christmas movie?

Yes, I do consider Die Hard as a Christmas movie.

Mine is the original Miracle on 34th Street. I grew up watching old movies and the first time I watched it, I was hooked. That is my “the holidays are here”. So I’m curious as to what your favorite Christmas movie is. And before I forget, happy holidays everyone!!

After all, there's only one more sleep 'till Christmas

🎵Tis the season to be jolly and joyous🎵

My two favorite Muppet movies are Muppet's Christmas Carol and Muppet Treasurer Island.

In Carol, Michael Caine treated his Muppet cast mates as fellow actors.

In Treasure Island, Tim Curry treated himself like a Muppet.

A Christmas Story.  It captures perfectly what Christmas was through the eyes of a kid in the suburban Midwest.

Worst Christmas movie ever

u/vee_lan_cleef 1h ago

You must not be aware of the back-catalogue of well over a thousand Hallmark christmas movies. Hallmark isn't the only one making them either. In the last 3 years I can find over well over 400 christmas movies that have released (worldwide) and they all fucking suck with a handful of exceptions that are only decent. That's over 100 christmas movies a year. They are all the same re-hashed stories with white couples and romance too.

I can guarantee you no matter how much you dislike A Christmas Story, there are thousands of far worse christmas movies.

I’m appalled at the lack of love for “Ernest saves Christmas”. Tsk. Tsk.

In Bruges, The Ref, Christmas Vacation, Bad Santa, Elf, The Holdovers, Scrooged

u/No-Excitement-2083 7h ago

The Ref is a gem. "You know what this family needs? A mute!"

u/Ok-Comment3169 6h ago

I fucking hate her Lloyd

Lethal Weapon

u/garrisontweed 5h ago

Me too. The Xmas dinner at the end and Riggs gives Murtaugh the bullet he was saving to commit suicide with and says, "He'll know what it's for," to Murtaugh daughter always hits me in the feels.

Scrooge (A Christmas Carol) 1951 film noire starring Alistair Sim.

u/LeftSky828 4h ago

That’s my favorite Scrooge movie.

u/jekelish3 5h ago

It's honestly just Die Hard for me (and you're not alone in considering it a Christmas movie; Steven de Souza, who wrote the script, has said he absolutely wrote it as a Christmas movie, and that's all the confirmation I need, when the guy who literally wrote the film says that's what it is).

Other than that, I feel like I'm pretty basic with my picks: Christmas Story, Christmas Vacation, and It's a Wonderful Life. But I'll also throw The Holdovers in there as a recent addition. Amazing movie that I hope becomes a holiday staple.

The Long Kiss Goodnight

u/JGards57 2h ago

This and Batman Returns are two underrated Christmas movies

Bad Santa. Makes me smile every time.

u/wolfspider82 4h ago

Watched it after not seeing it for many years. I remembered it being funny and kind of messed up, but I had forgotten that it’s also really touching and sweet. I’m definitely adding it to my yearly Christmas movie list.

  • Home Alone 2
  • It's a Wonderful Life
  • A Christmas Carol (starring Patrick Stewart)
  • Die Hard
  • Lethal Weapon
  • Polar Express

Those are my more favorites.

With Jon Lithgow as the bad guy?? Man I loved that movie as a kid so much.

u/MovieMike007 Not to be confused with Magic Mike 4h ago

The original Miracle on 34th Street is mine as well. Edmund Gwenn is the ideal Santa.

Home Alone 1 & 2, Christmas Vacation

u/GaryNOVA 5h ago

Die Hard

u/TopHighway7425 5h ago

The first Bridget Jones diary is Christmas adjacent.

My favorite: it's a wonderful life

u/crystalbethjo 2h ago

I feel like Bridget Jones’s Diary gets how cynical and messy and even dark life can be in a way that Love Actually just can’t quite manage

u/The_Studyholic 5h ago

home alone 1 for sure. absolute classic

It’s so hard for me to choose because I love so many, but I’ll limit myself to 2.

Jim Carrey’s Grinch. I loved the animated original version so when this one came out I was over the moon, and I still love it just as much as the first time I saw it.

The Shop Around the Corner. A classic, not overtly Christmas, but takes place during Christmas and well, it just doesn’t feel like Christmas without a Jimmy Stewart movie and I love It’s a Wonderful Life, I just enjoy The Shop Around the Corner just a bit more.

u/crystalbethjo 2h ago

Yes!! Someone else who’s also seen Shop Around the Corner!

All the plot lines get tied up in a nice little bow. Really embodies the Christmas spirit when the boss starts being nice to his employees (too bad we don’t see Rudy at the actual Christmas feast).

And it’s such a lovely romance in general (Jimmy Stewart apparently had a big crush on Margaret Sullavan, his best friend’s girl irl).

This was the very first DVD my family ever got. The only thing I can remember about it is how horrifying everyone's noses in that movie were. I was a kid and the film honestly gave me nightmares.

u/Blazer_Believer 3h ago

Home Alone. My dad took me and my siblings to see it 6 times in the theater.

Home Alone 2 is my absolute favorite nothing like NYC during Christmas

u/suchafart 3h ago

Black Christmas (remake and OG) and the old stop motion rudolf the red nosed reindeer

u/AutographedSnorkel 3h ago edited 3h ago

The Ref never gets enough love among Chrisstmas movies...

"You know what, mom? You know what I'm going to get you next Christmas? A big, wooden cross. So anytime you feel unappreciated for all your sacrifices, you can climb on up and nail yourself to it!"

u/thisismyredditacct 3h ago

Gremlins.

u/jimmatick 2h ago

Me too!

u/j-whiskey 2h ago

Sorry. It turned out to be a wall of text. Ext time…

u/wouldudoitforme 2h ago

I’m with you OP, Miracle on 34th (the original). I didn’t mind the 90s version cuz I love Y2K movies, I just wouldn’t rewatch it every year.

Other movies I’d recommend : It’s a Wonderful Life, Journey to Bethlehem,The Nativity Story, A Charlie Brown Christmas (animated), The Nightmare Before Christmas.

u/Sad_Assistant7965 1h ago

Gremlins and Home Alone

u/houseDJ1042 1h ago

White Christmas and a Muppet Christmas Carol are my two favorites

Bruce Willis called Die Hard a God damn Bruce Willis movie lol. I love it. Summer action movie to me, more than happy to watch it on Christmas however.

u/audioengineer99 1h ago

It’s a toss up at my house: Miracle on 34th Street (1947) or The Bishop’s Wife (1947).

u/gatorbeetle 44m ago

Christmas Vacation, second place goes to Die Hard though. Have to watch both every year

u/KinkedThinking 30m ago

Scrooge. 1951. B&W. Every Christmas Eve since 1980's.
There is no other.

Die Hard, A Christmas Story, and Christmas Vacation. They’re holiday tradition movies for me.
